Actually its very useful and easy IF your video card supports two monitors. You just plug the second monitor into the 2nd outlet in the card and reboot. Windows should recognize the new monitor. Just configure your setup by rightclicking the desktop and properties. You can declare the primary monitor and which side the 2nd is on.

Yes, for future reference, if your video card has multiple ports or you're looking at getting one, the main ones are usually VGA, DVI, and S-Video. In fact, the ATI card in my laptop has all three. VGA is an analog port and can be hooked up to regular CRT monitors. DVI is a "digital" port, and can be hooked up to newer flat screen digital monitors and digital tv's. S-Video is usually useful for hooking up to tv's and displays of that nature because you can also convert it to RCA. If you're using DVI ports, you also have to be careful that you're using the correct format (A vs D vs I) because the plugs are different and so are the signals.

If you want to manage your display on the attached screens (in windows), right click the desktop and go to properties. Under the settings tab, it should list information about the attached devices. Depending on the default behavior of the graphics card, you may have to click on Advanced and use the Displays/Monitors/Whatever tab to change what displays are active and which is the primary. Back at the settings tab, you can change the orientation of the screens to have a vertical alignment, horizontal, etc. If you want to simply display the same image on all of the screens, you're done. If you want to "extend your desktop" across the monitors, click on the secondary display and check the appropriate box at the bottom. You can set the resolutions independently of one another in this mode, and you can use the Identify button to make sure which display is which.
