Installing Springs

I just ordered a set of trd springs for my neighbor. Just wanted to see if any scion tc owners on here have some tips for me to have these put on. We are probably gonna do it in my buddies garage where we will have air tools/spring compressors and all the fixins.

Generally speaking with no issues how long should this job take?

Yeah it should take no more than 2 hours if things go smoothly. Had a tough time with my mustang and took me 8 hours. We decided to take a torch to the regular springs to get them out.

I did mine with a friend on a lift so it was a piece of cake....It all depends on how you want to approach the rears...weather your going to strip out the carpet to get to it, or just peel it back (going to need a hand, someone pulling back and someone using the ratchet) Its very straight forward

with the front just get off all the window plastics, wipers, when you get down to the wheel, disconnet the abs undo the strut bolts and pull out

For the rear you might need a bar to get leverage to be able to pull the rears out

I believe the TRD's do not need any cutting do the bump stop (but read the directions)

thanks svickstc....i did a search and found a write up on yoursciontc.com. It was fairly descriptive and had pics so that helped. I'm not a big fan of working on unfamiliar vehicles. ie...anything other than a jeep or dsm.

i know how that feels....when i did my suspension 3 corners took about 2 hours...the last (drivers side front) took 3 days after waiting on a new front steering knuckle, axle, and hub and bearing. its a long story, but it involves frozen bolts/parts, a press, and snapped tabs on the steering knuckle after being put in the press to get the axle out of the hub

have fun....Make sure he gets an alignment, although the TRD drop is not drastic at all it should still be aligned as im sure you probably know, but if he is on scion boards he might find people saying the TRD drop doesnt really need an alignment bad.

Use spring compressors from AZ or AA. These are the safest ones. Anything else and you risk broken fingers (and surgery in my case).

Think about what each bolt will do before you loosen it.

You may feel a vibration at certain speeds depending on the amount of drop. This is normal and does not hurt anything.

For aftermarket springs, an alignment is needed.

Becareful when removing the front top mounts. They can come apart and all the 4mm ball bearings will be all over your garage :bigeek:

Thanks fellas. He's not on any boards and this is his first real "tuner" car. I'm teaching him as he goes. I've done suspension jobs before on my car, a friends wrx, and multiple lifts and spring over axle jobs on jeeps. I read in the write up i found that you should tie up the hub with a strap so it doesn't drop down and separate the cv joint. I looked through and saw all the pics and it doesn't seem to be all that difficult...i'm guessing it should take around 3 to 4 hours with beer/food breaks in between. I'm also having him schedule an alignment about 2 weeks after the install to let the springs settle a bit.....i think whenever you take apart the front end such as in this case you should get an alignment.
