I'm lookin to get the access port for my WRX. I've got a turbo back on the car already. I was wondering if anyone has this and if they are happy with it? I was also wondering if their ship times are pretty accurate? Thankx

I have an Accessport and am very happy with it. As for shipping I can't comment.

Do NOT order it directly from CObb....you will wait 4ever! Order from Subaru of Dallas...you'll get it much quicker.

check the vendor section first to see if any of the vendors here can get it for you. from what i've seen most are very easy to reach and would be happy to look into it for you, since the pricing is standardized everywhere.

I enjoyed my AP for the STi, I wish I had a chance to play with the street tuner interface, as it seems pretty nice. If you are searching for a deal, there are usually a hand full of used ones available on Nasioc. They go in the $500 range.

I've mostly heard of good things about the AP. But I have read about people having trouble with them too, I think some people have issues when they upgrade their turbo. I'm not too sure about that though, I could just be making stuff up. I would search nasioc and read all you can cause I know theres alot about it on there.

I <3 my access port.. I ordered straight from COBB and it took about a week.

if you search on nasioc, you'll get LOTS of info, but you'll also get just as many arguments on both sides-
basically it all comes down to how much flexibility you want. if you just want to do the mods that the AP maps call for, and have an easy plug and play setup, then go for it- people love it for that.
if you want a little more flexibility, in terms of picking and choosing what mods to go with (as i understand it, cobb does not make a map that allows for intakes) something like a utec would work well... and by the time you get the tuner for the access port that allows for this, you're spending just as much as you would for a piggy back.
read up on it though- and decide what is best for you.

I've got an AP for my LGT and love it. Stupid easy to use (which is good for me)
Lots of good info on the AP at cobbtuning.com as well as Legacygt.com

The AccessPort was my first upgrade and most deffinitley the most important & useful. Ive used it from stock, to now a VF34 with injectors, fuel pump, & other modifications. if you are looking for ease of use & reliability, the AP is most deffinitley the way to go.
another advantage to the AP is that there is no extra hardware that needs to be installed into the car. with the UTEC, u will need to sacrifice some foot room in the passenger footwell to fit the Piggyback ECU. with the AP, all of the info gets flashed into the factory ECU & thats it. no pieces have to be installed, & even better - nobody can tell u have engine management just from looking at the car.

OMG fred is alive!
good points, but seriously- the extension of the utec is about 2.5"... and not noticable at all. except for the optional map selector switch, which fits right in next to the ebrake lever, there is no sign whatsoever of having a piggy back.
not saying this should make or brake your decision... just clearing it up

I have had the AP and was very happy with it... but if you want the ability to change maps, and tune your car...
buy my utec

i have an access port
i run an intake (injen)
i love it
i wouldn't change out the turbo without getting a ProTune (a ProTune is when you get a shop to build you a custom map, but you still need the AP to put it on your car)
ps. you can change maps with an AP. not as easilly as with the UTEC map selector switch, but it's still quite idiot proof

Well I got the AP and you guys were right. I love it. I used the stage two bc I have a turbo back exhaust and it works great. It hits boost real solid. Can't wait to get it to the track to try it out for good. Next I gotta do something about the suspension. Thankx for everyones help.

IMO the accessport is WAY better than the UTEC, especially with the introduction of the Street-tuner, and especially the ProTune capabilities. These are critical steps that Cobb has been needing to make for years, and now they have done it. Grab an accessport for $500(used off of clubwrx-nasioc) and get a ProTune for $250 (give or take) and you are gonna be able to make nice power with your OWN map, built specifically for YOUR car. So all in all for around $750..give or take, you have a very nice setup and you can stay away from the $900 UTEC pricetag. Just my .02.....Good Luck! :)

I'm running a VF34 turbo setup with AP and it works great. I still need to get a Protune but none the less, its a product.

don't hate, jon! haha- seriously- you gave a used price example one the AP and a new price for the utec- unfair! you can pick them up for 550 to 650 used, but whatev- the guy has already made up his mind and made the purchase...

Eh, just my opinion. Before Street/ProTuner i would say that the UTEC is the way to go for WRX's (i had one on my 03.....remember?), but know i think that the AP is the way to go. You can still get a used AP for cheaper than a used UTEC regardless. But whatever, personal preference. :-p

I have AP and its cool.Just got a protune from shane at precision tuning. He's a newer guy but Cobb had him train with the best. And he's backed 100% by Precision Tuning. And Cobb of course.Car feels awesome. And good price.
If you get the bigger turbo I would deffently get a protune as soon as possible there is alot of power in there that protune can bring out.:)

So far we did the street tune which is almost a full day of just driving around and him tuning. We are doing the dyno in the next few weeks which I was told would be around **edit**Talk to shane. And he's gonna try and do a couple in a day. He's also triing to do a travel thing where he would come to you which is cool for the street tune.
I like the road tune cause its real time and not a machine your strapped to.
Car feels great and there is deffently added power.I'll get you guys numbers as soon as my dyno is done.
Rich from precision and cobb is also backing him 100% percent in case there are any issues or problems etc...WHich I guess is expected from any licensed protuner shop.

yeah they said they were looking for volunteer cars so they could get some base maps set up for different popular setups... i was gonna try to get in on that. i wonder if we could do a dyno tune day kinda thing where enough of us get together to fill up an entire days work and get it for a bit cheaper.
just wondering about my options, might go with a tune soon, might wait till i'm finished with the power mods completely.

does precision tuning have a dyno now? i'm still trying to get an idea of what a full tune would cost... i guess i'll contact them about it.

edit: made a few calls to set the wheels in motion on getting some tuning set up. hopefully Precision Tuning will be joining TST as well...

Actually I have an account here (wow search works very well lol). Precision doesn't have a dyno as of yet, it's being looked into though.
At the moment I am in the process of trying to get slotted times for a dyno (like every other Sun for example) so I can schedule around 4 people a day. I know that doesn't sound like much, but 4 people at 2 hrs each is a long day (gotta have lunch too).
Road tunes include me hooking up a wide band for AFR's and tuning them. Not many people doing road tunes do this, I don't know why, but I won't mess with AFR's without one.
Jim - Thanks for the words, still need to finish you up. Maybe after the holidays.
You guys can contact me directly through here (PM) or a better way is through PrecisionTuning.com in the forums. I belong to so many forums it's hard to keep up.
Thanks Guys

So what I take is that you need ProTune to make custom maps on the AP???
TehWagon
11-22-2005, 11:30 AM
correct. or i think there's something called 'street tuner' as well, but i don't know how they differ.
