Unless you're willing to put in some time to learn about photography, you're better off with a good point and shoot (ie Canon G10). Photography can get expensive once you add in the costs of lenses and other various accessories.

Yep. It's more than capable of great images without requiring much prior knowledge on photography settings. If you learn a thing or two, it can take better images than an idiot with an SLR.

^^Speaks the truth, and I didn't believe him 100% when I got into it. I bought my cam and kit lens for 520 shipped used and was happy...that was in May, since then I've dropped probbably dropped another....1000 or so on equiptment and there will be more in the spring. P&S is your best bet, its quick, simple, and usually cheaper.

StillenGLE, if you go to the moorestown NJ meets, I will be there not this Tuesday but the one coming after. I can let you play around with my 30D and you can get a feel of what its like working with an SLR. Also, Ciotti will have his XTi (or maybe at that point XSi) out and you can probbably talk to him for advice.

I agree with I like rice. buy a decent P&S and see how you do with that. All a camera is, is a lightproof box. What you do with it is what determines whether the photo taken is good or not. I have a lot more camera gear than jspek, yet I still think he's a better photographer. Cameras don't take pictures, people do.

+1 I have the cannon G7 which is very similar to the current G10..It has most of the manual adjustments you get with an slr if you want to try stuff out for yourself..I have learned quite a bit with mine and I think I am ready for a good slr next time around but I will still miss it..The only gripe I have is that the high iso setting do not work so well..It takes awesome pictures though..Manual adjustments are not quite as easy to mess with once you get going due to lack of buttons, ect. but for the most part it is all there. Plus you can buy different lenses ect.
Heres some pics I took using a G7 with no tripod that I thought came out pretty damn good..

i would buy a used d40/d50/rebel xt for as cheap as you can get it. and take as many pictures as you want. if you don't get bored of it, and actually enjoy it, then pursue. otherwise, there is no sense in spending a lot of money on a camEra.
and i honestly think what vwcorradokid said is one of the best quotes, it is completely true, all the gear in the world can't change the photographers eye for a shot.
so buy a P&S or a really cheap dslr or just a film slr, and take some shots. . . take a course at a community college to learn basics, and see if it is fun for you. .

stillen if you realllly want to get into this hobby, it will get expensive, fast. since i bought my d50 2.5 years ago ive dropped a total of 3-4 grand on equipment. and thats mostly on lenses. you cant just go buy a camera and take awesome shots right away. and learning photoshop is another catch. the g10 is more than capable of taking awesome shots, if the person knows what they are doing.

it has been mentioned in this thread, but just to restate:
good cameras dont make for good photos... good photographers do.
Ok I'm not really into that photography and stuff, but to defend him a little, so what if he wants to just take a bunch of pics randomly of his "car and stuff"?
We all started some where, right? It takes time to develop an eye.
Every time one of my friends is around with their d40 I grab it and start playing, and I'm always toying with the D90 before work. I agree with if he really wants a dslr, then get a d40 or the Rebel xt and go from there.

But a SLR is is a huge waste unless the owner will put forth the time and effort to learn how to take advantage of it, which doesn't happen overnight. Taking a class would be an amazing help and I fully support it, or at the very least get a book or do a lot of reading online to understand shutter speed, aperture, depth of field, iso, white balance, and quite a few other things, and how they all work together to create an image.
This isnt for most people, which is fine, but in this case you would do much better with a quality point and shoot camera which are really pretty damn impressive these days. 8 time out of 10 a good point and shoot can take the same photo that a SLR can... and the camera will do all the thinking for you, and do it in a compact and less expensive package.
I dont think anyone here is saying that he absolutely shouldnt get a SLR, but rather that there are some point and shoots out there which are pretty damn impressive and it may be a better option, depending on his level of commitment.

Zero skill, zero experience, zero gear. Seems a bit ambitious to already have the mindset of making money. It's fine to have goals, but it's better to have realistic goals in small steps.

If you think anyone is judging you then you're not understanding the responses here. We're trying to disspell the common myth that expensive camera = good photos. They've got almost nothing to do with one another. Many many people have SLRs that they leave in Auto or Program mode all the time, and if thats the case it functions EXACTLY like a P+S would, it just costs a lot more and weighs a lot more.
There are also plenty of good P+S cameras which will have BETTER image quality than a lower end SLR with a low end lens on it.

Yeah if you're interested in learning manual exposure and are willing to make a commitment to take a class and take the time to practice and learn it, then go for it... and if thats the case then I would recommend an SLR. If you're not willing to go that far though, I would not recommend an SLR.
A class at a community college is a great idea, and well worth the price.

There are a handful of people on this forum that make some decent money out of our photography (weddings, magazines, etc), so we're giving you advice from our own experience. I've seen thousands come and go, wasting their money by not listening to sound advice.
If you're positive that this is something you're going to invest a lot of time and money, jump into an SLR. If not, go with a high end P&S.

I was kind of in the same boat you were in...I wanted to get into photography and wanted to upgrade to a DSLR...if you have a small budget I think the D40 is perfect for what you want it is great camera...def grab one used since if you do stick with it and get better you will probably want to upgrade but at the same time the D40 is a great camera for the price...the canon's which are similar are also nice I played with an XTi and a XSi and both have some cool features but I liked Nikons better...I decided to get a Nikon D80 fr various reason including my budget but I also hope that it won't need to upgrade for a long time since the D80 seems to be a pretty solid camera...anyways as everyone told me, go to a camera store and ask to mess around with a few of the cameras and talk to the people there...see which one fits you...good luck

I didnt like that the D40 requires AF-S lenses, and I believe the functionality of it is limiting in some other ways as well? I'm not sure though, I'm not too well read up on it.
Other options include D50, D60, D80... I'd think about them all. Also from Canon the Rebel line... any of them. I'd go to a pro camera shop around you and talk to someone there, ask to check out a bunch and you'll have a better idea after that. Hopefully they'll be helpful and not just try to sell you what they want to sell you.
If there's no place near you then Allen's in Levittown, PA has been good for me, and they have used gear as well (although not always a huge savings).

Well I am looking at the D80, its a 10.2 MP. not to bad
Don't look at MP as a deciding factor...there are a lot more more important things then that...the D40 at 6mp takes great pictures...the only issue I had found with the D80 is the metering isn't that great and it can tend to over expose pictures...but it is fairly easy to make a few adjustment and you are good to go, it wasn't enough of a problem to make me not purchase one!

Yeah the whole megapixel race is a marketing ploy... there is a lot more that goes into choosing a good camera. Anything that Nikon or Canon currently offer is totally solid and will do you well, but go check them out in person like I said.
Keep in mind that the camera body is only half the expense (or less than half). I would try to get a decent lens for it, not the cheap kit lens. You'll also need a filter for the camera, a camera bag, and a handful of accessories for it just to keep it clean. You'll also need at least one memory card, a card reader, and an editing program on your computer.

And as far as I'm concerned the SLR purchase is a package deal with some form of education on the camera, otherwise we're back to the p+s convo where I would be willing to bet that the SLR will result in WORSE photos than a p+s would. If not a class you need some sort of guidance, but a class would really be best. Even a once a week night class for 8 weeks or something...

Camera prices change over time, and Allen's will be competitive with any legitimate shop, or maybe beat them on price.

Just a few things I read
Anything over 8 megapixels will mean virtually nothing unless you want to print large prints.
FPS mean virtually nothing if you never use it (sports, birds, motorsports, etc.)...if you just shoot pre-set things in pre-set environments it makes no difference...ive never had to use burst fire on either of my cameras.
You have to get a camera that is suited for what you want to do, if you just want to take pictures of stuff, a point and shoot is probbably your best bet, its all been said here. I would really listen to funny!, i like rice, troll, jspek, vwcorradokid, and most others that have put their solid advice here. They have been doing this for years, in fact most have probbably been shooting since before me and you knew how to shoot with a P&S. If you want to check out my 30D you are welcome to do so, fire off some shots, and ill show you the basics, but I'll say what others have, at the point where you are NOW, its not going to matter much if you get a P&S or a top-of-the-line DSLR, the DSLR might just be more confusing for you. Sure its a long-term investment so you won't have to upgrade equiptment time and time again, but I found it better to work at a slow pace and learn rather than jump in to deep water immediately.

Well realistically, youll need at LEAST a year experience to start any kind of business with photography, and that means taking classes, reading, and spending time consistently on shooting and learning. If you want to just take pictures for now, buy a nice Point and Shoot camera, because if you get an SLR, you won't be able to take "nice" pictures for a little while until you learn everything, and its quite a bit to learn. A good point and shoot will give you nice crisp pictures, good features, at a generally lower price compared to SLR and it will be more user-friendly so you won't get tangled up in the manual modes...trust me, it is very frustrating to take shot after shot and see that it came out different from how you wanted, I think after almost 9 months I am just getting out of that territory barely.
Don't forget post-processing, which is a whole other field and I find it harder than taking the picture itself (but I need to learn it more)
My advice
Buy a nice Point and Shoot (like the Canon g10? that i like rice suggested)
Shoot with it and enjoy your pictures
Play with the manual modes here and there, learn stuff, and THEN move to an SLR if you want to progress with it as a hobby.
There are still times that I am glad to have my old 5 megapixel Kodak point and shoot, because despite having a half decent ammount of knowledge about photography sometimes I just don't want to mess with using a large bulky camera even in full-auto mode or manual settings for that matter.

i didnt see where anyone was telling you to spend all kinds of money. the truth of the matter is, photography is an expensive hobby when it gets serious. every single person that posted in this thread was trying to save you money by telling you to get something entry level before jumping too far into it right away. if you keep attacking the people in here that are trying to help you, its gonna get ugly.

wtf... we're telling you to just buy a simple point and shoot so you dont waste your money.
here's the deal... a lot of us know a lotttt more about this than you, and have yearssss of experience with photography, and buying gear, and making mistakes, and so on.
this isnt something any of us would rub in your face or bring up randomly, but you posted a thread asking for help.
we're here, taking our time, to try and help you. we're more than happy to do it, but if you're not going to listen to what we're saying and understand its coming from people with a lot of insight then we'll feel like we're wasting our time.
you're learning whats involved with photography... sorry that the truth is you cant get a complete high end slr package for $400, and that even if you did take the plunge your photos wont improve unless you take a class, but better for you to know now then once you've already begun spending money.
you've got a bad attitude dude... i dont understand it. ton of people trying to help and you get all defensive and mad? unappreciative doesn't even begin to describe it...
and no, i wont close the thread. you obviously didnt take anything away from it but i hope that the time we've taken here will be informative to someone down the line, so it wasnt a complete waste.

First off you don't have other taste's because you've never done photography so you wouldn't know what is involved.
Second your immature as hell, its almost funny reading this thread and seeing you react the way you did when some really great photographers and very knowledgeable people have chimed in.

because thats a lot of money to drop on a camera when you don't know anything about photography. Think logically here, I know that may be difficult for you. But lets cut the crap and admit that 1300 bucks right off the bat to realize you may not even enjoy something is a little ridiculous. Start off small.

Since you're not listening to any advice, I'll tell you what you want to hear.
If you're thinking about using a camera to start a business, even if it's just a very slight chance that you start one, I think you should buy a Nikon D3 and call it a day. Why waste the money on buying a D40/60/80/90 when in the end you're just going to want to upgrade...and while your at it, you're going to need lenses covering from super wide to telephoto, so the 14-24, 24-70, and 70-200 should cover you so the camera can take the photos for you.

if you're going to take a photography class. they will require you to have a camera, slr or non-slr, they dont care. i know that in my class theres a girl that has a point and shoot that takes better pictures than half of the people in the class with slr cameras (nikon & canon alike)

the reason we suggested a P&S is because they are generally easier to get used to/use than a dslr is. If you are going to be taking a class, an entry level dslr would be perfect because the professor and students will be able to help each other learn the uses of the camera. we were simply advising against buying a prosumer/professional camera before you are ready. the choice is yours and only yours to make, we're here to give you sound advice as having gone through all of this before.

Good, but if your dad has a D80, you may want to keep that in mind. That way for christmas gifts you could buy him a lens and you could use it on your camera as well, haha.

Do some more research that is not a true statement by any means....
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/nikon-vs-canon.htm
"Unlike 1980, in the 1990s Canon cameras evolved to be as professional as Nikon. They have competed neck and neck for the same customers ever since."

Canon and Nikon have been competing for the top spot in the DSLR class of cameras. There are companies that make cameras that outperform them (Mamiya, Hasselblad, etc...), but they come along with a mortgage. I would LOVE to get my hands on a Hasselblad H3DII-50 to play with and see how big I can print the photos. Unfortunately, the H3DII is WAY out of my price range right now.
There are people who are brand biased, but in reality, each company offers their products that may outperform the other in certain aspects.

That's something you'd get if you were real serious into photography, What kind of camera's do people use for like Modified Magazine, Superstreet, etc some of them use Canon and Nikon right, That's like my ultimate goal is to shoot photo's for them and like Nopi etc. basically big name people JTuned does a nice job with his Picture's, I believe his name is Eric

Most are using prosumer and pro bodies, ie Canon 40D, 1Ds MKII, 1Ds MKIII, 1D MKIIn, 1D MKIII, Nikon D200, D300, D80, etc. A few still use the entry level bodies, though.

That's what I kinda figured, that's way out of my league for now though. I need to go to a camera shop to find figure out what I like and more comfortable with.

Used prosumer bodies are affordable, ie Canon 20D for about $380-400 or Canon 30D for $420-450 and more than capable. The prosumer bodies have larger viewfinders, 2nd wheel for quicker and easier adjustments, beefier bodies, and are larger so they're comfortable to hold, especially with heavier lenses.

Maybe I should create a Poll and ask people what they vote for. Put a few camera's in it or just make it NONSLR or SLR, for first camera, and see what vote's i get, what do you recommend I get, I was recommend by TurboDSM the Canon Rebel Xti, and I think you mention'd the G10

You have to decide what you want. If you want sharp images without spending $700-1000, a P&S will do fine. If you get an SLR, the kit lens will be slow and soft so don't expect too much as far as image quality. You'll have to spend ~ $300-400 for a decent wide angle zoom lens.
Stillen GLE
11-30-2008, 10:48 PM
I am gonna start out with a P&S camera for sure, the only thing is which one to get!, because I know if i walk into a Camera shop, there gonna ask me what kind of photo shooting I will be doing.

My two cents on something mentioned like 5 pages ago...
I am sure it varies to school to school, but at my community college, you must have a SLR for the photography classes... it says in massive bold letters in the schedule "Must have a digital SLR camera for this class" for the digital photo classes, and same lines for the "normal" photo classes, but film of course.
So a point and shoot might not be appropriate, depending on your school and what they require. I think my school's point of this is that they want to teach how to use the camera along with how to take good pictures. So check syllabuses or whatever if you're wanting to buy a camera and take a photo class.

Its a school graduate high schooler's go to if they feel they didnt receive the proper class's or feel they aren't prepared enough to go to college, so they take extra class's to better themselves and SAT' or ACT score's they also have it for people that graduated college also.

I'm still confused. Grad School is what you do after you finish your Undergraduate Degree from a University. either way, if you're going to be taking a photography class at a community college then you should really consider a DSLR, like TurboV said

Yes that is correct about the degree in a university, but then they have it for high schooler's i know a girl that's doing it she was good at sport's so a Private school recruited her, so she can go play sport's at a better college, instead of getting 4 year's in high school she get's a 5th because she was good, they also have it for academic's like for what I want to do, then they have athletics what she's doing,
I will do that If i have time, this school is up in CT.

I am on there as XTIguy215, and lots of others from tst are there as well...there are some Nikon users on that site as well.
If you really want to get into photography and you think its something you would enjoy, but something like 97turboDSM's XTi, or any other entry level DSLR for that matter. It will take you a little while and you might have crappy pictures for the first month or so but it could be worth it for you in the end.

If you get any kind of entry-level Canon DSLR, I can walk you through pretty much everything youll need to know to start shooting without getting angry, not that that should be an ultimate deciding factor for you because I am sure there are Nikon users that will do the same for you if you get something like a D60 or a D70 etc. You WILL have to read on your own though, and shoot a good bit, some things can be explained but are much easier remembered if you actually put them into practice.

I've been learning Nikon lately since I just bought one so I could probably lend some help if you need for understanding setting them up and all...I honestly thing a D40 is the perfect camera for you, pick one up used and play around with it...that is if you decide to get an SLR over a P&S...or even a used D50 would be good!
