As far as I know you have to at least have your license. So... I would imagine 16.

its good you're looking to get started. I think carts would be your best bet for getting seat time. IIRC, you have to be like 6yr and older to run them. Worth looking into. Obviously your parents would have to be involved because you would need them to haul everything around for you.

Here are the SCCA autocross rules aka SOLO http://www.scca.com/documents/Solo%20Rules/2008_Solo_Rules_2.pdf

Look thru the rules and you'll see lots of info covering age of driver and license requirements, if any. For example:

2.8 JUNIOR DRIVER PROGRAM
A program is provided that allows regions to permit minors, under 16
years of age, to compete in Solo events in non shifter-based racing
karts. The purpose of this program is to serve as a tool for membership
recruitment and retention by providing competition opportunities
for the entire family. The rules for organizing and conducting a
Junior Driver program are in Section 19, Appendix G and Appendix
H. As this program is still in the developmental phase, rule updates
or clarifications may appear periodically in the FasTrack section of
the official SCCA publication.

ah damn, I guess Im going to need to wrap up all the sponsors I can before another local guy tries for the big leagues...see ya if I see ya.

And I would say the next viable option will be when you are 16 outside of karts...something like a skippy race program----> series would work nicely.

yes, but keep in mind that the dynamics you will learn in those cars will not translate as well as other choices in regards to what you will compete in. The power application is also something a bit unique to what participates in most series. That said, if its what you have to work with, go for it and be careful. Just remember, what you can do in a kart doesnt quite translate in a 3000 + lb car, regardless of its ability.

true, but it does give you the basics and foundation of control.

skip barber may allow you to do the racing school, youll have to call and find out, obviously youll need a parent/guardian waiver

Hey some of you youngins might want to look up "Tommy Boileau"...now 14yo, and he started racing in NASA competition when he was 12 years old! If you have the Dec. 2008 Grassroots Motorsports magazine, look on p. 152: Fourteen year old Tommy Boileau was the youngest driver competing at the NASA Championships, and he finished 55th in the Spec Miata race. This kid has been having a great career start last couple of years; his dad also races.
