i was thinking about buying my buddy's bike, which will be my first bike, and i was wondering do i need proof of insurance at the notary shop to sign the title over like you would a car? i hear plenty of stories of how people ride bikes with no insurance, so i was just wondering how they bought a bike without insurance. I don't plan to drive it right away which is why i don't need to get insurance for it, when i'm ready to ride it i will obviously throw insurance on it.

at the notary, you usually do 2 things. 1st is to get the title switched into your name. you do not need insurance for this. 2nd thing you usually do is get the car or bike registered. you DO need proof of insurance for this part.

sometimes if im buying a project that wont be on the road for a while, ill just switch the title without registration. that way i dont need to pay reg fee and insurance. you can always get it registered later. but just fyi, it usually takes like 2 months to get the title back if you want to register it.

if you choose to ride without insurance (i dont recommend it, and bike insurance is usually cheap enough anyway) you can simply get a plan worked out with your insurance company and get it added. get the paper work from them for proof to show the notary, and then just drop it from the insurance plan. this way you get registered, and you have a peice of paper to show a cop if you get pulled over ;)

ok cool, thanks for clearing it up for me. i want to grab the bike because its a really good deal, but i wouldn't start riding it right away, which is why i don't really feel like spending money if i'm not gonna be riding. but i might as well just get it all done at one time anyway because, like u said, its usually not all that much money
