hello, im about to install 35% tints on my windows and i was wondering what percentage everyone else had in PA. Any troubles with the cops?

you should have no trouble at all with 35%. its not dark at all. i had 15% in my suzuki swift and never got pulled over in philadelphia, but one time when i went to an autocross event in warminster i got a ticket for it. i currently have 15% on my civic and have had no trouble.

piece of advise though, if you leave philly. try to have your windows down if you get 15% or lower.

I have been busted with 25% and 35%. Depends how anal the cop is that day. If I were you no darker than 35%. They generally want to be able to look in one side like the passenger window and see through the other side of your drivers window.

Had 22% on the suby for two and a half years before a cop ever said anything to me. And he only did it because he had nothing else to get me on other than a bad registration sticker.

Been pulled over racing, speeding, etc and they never once said anything to me about it.

I have 35%... I've been pulled over 2x in Newtown for it and never anywhere else. Grr to Newtown.

1st time I got pulled over was at like 3am in the middle of a bad snowstorm in downtown Newtown. Cop was behind me and said he was looking in my sideview and couldnt see my face. WTF, my sideview was half covered in ice. Told me it was my 1 warning and if I got pulled over in Netwown again for tint it would be $105 per window.

2nd time I got pulled over on the bypass at night where the speed limit is like 55. What cop is looking for tint at night on the bypass? He grilled me about this 'suspicious paper' I had in the backseat. Sheet of yellow legal paper with basically a shopping list. He asked to look at it and I was like sure, he analyzed, asked me a few questions, and then let me go. Told me it was my 1 warning, and if I ever got pulled over again, yadda yadda... :rotfl:

Have 5% on my car which is black, haven't been bothered in the least bit in the 8 years I've had it.

Within the past month wifey took the car out and stepped 2 feet into Tullytown Borough and got nabbed. I have been to events in the Tullytown parking lot multiple times with the tint the way it is, I head to Penn Warner and drive down main street way to many times during the summer and have never had a problem, go figure- sorry wifey.

Wifey used to have a black beretta with 35% or 25%, I forget which- She was hasseled in Horsham leaving work one day so she tore it off that night. Never got a ticket or warning but what a mess-

old truck had 35 on the sides and 15 on the back...i had my window cracked one day in the winter and a cop of a nearby township was staring me down the whole time i was driving past him. Two years and no troubles.

New truck i've had 22% all around for a few months, no one has said anything yet. I think it's similar to my old tint, since i used to have darker back and lighter sides, and now it's darker sides and lighter back.

just stating what works for me. and as long as you have a direct note from doc and keep your sunglasses on you it shouldn't matter if you have photo sensitivity it needs to be dark the dads a cop.

Had 30% and, after a year of no problems, the first time we drove my car through Carlisle, we were stopped and ticketed ($108). Local cop said that if I was pulled over again for tint, the amount of the next ticket would be much higher. Not sure if that's completely accurate however. The cop actually saw my car stopped at a light, drove about a mile past (based on the time it took for him to turn around) and came back just to pull me over.

areas to watch out for- jamison, upper moreland, ivyland , newtown, blue bell, oxford valley mall(yes, there is a cop that sits in there and will give tickets for tint at times) doylestown, hatfield, warminster ...drive slowly through there, open your sunroof if you have one to let more light in and get out fast...cops use the safety excuse, but the truth is its 108 dollars in their township..

i used to roll with 5% on my White G 35 Coupe. And White Cars make the Tint Pop Alot more then any other car. i had no problems. but if your somewhere where your not suppose to be... at a time your not suppose to be out at. you will get pulled over. it just gives the cops a reason to. but usually there pretty cool.

I'm confused lol what's darker? High or lower numbers?

The lower number is darker. The % represents amount of visiblity.

So for example:
5% = can't see shyt
45%= not worth paying for tint IMo, becuase it's still very visible.

Hell, I have 20% all the way around and it seems too light to me.

I thought I had 15%. But the one time I was pulled over and actually metered for it, the reading came back 7%. My tint is VERY dark.

I've only gotten pulled over for it a few times -- knock on wood. I've only been written up with a warning once. The other times, they let me go.

It all depends on where you are (I was never harassed in Philly, but was in State College), what mood the cop is in, and how you speak to the cop. A little politeness can go a long way.

If anyone is ever out in the Harrisburg area -- DO NOT drive through a town called Royalton with tint! It's a really small town east of Harrisburg International Airport.

B drove through it one day in his Lexus IS 300 -- he has 35% tint on all his side windows and 20% on his back window. Compared to mine, it's next to nothing. Anyhoo, he got pulled over about 8 months ago and was hit with a ticket for his tint. Paid the fine and didn't remove the tint. A couple weeks ago, we were driving through Royalton again (had no choice, we had to go pick something up at a friend's house who lives there) -- and B rolled down ALL of his windows as a precaution before we even got into town. We were about halfway through the five blocks that make up Royalton .. and the SAME damn cop came screaming up behind him, siren and lights going, and pulled B over again for his tint.

The cop was an absolute a$$hole. If I was B, I probably would've leaned out my window and strangled him. As it was, B got two tickets -- another one for the tint, and a second one which was basically for 'not listening to what the cop told you to do the first time'. In total, he had to pay over $700 for all the fines, $600 of it being for that second ticket!!

most tint shops lie so you wont be afraid to tint your car...

the legal limit is 70% on ALL WINDOWS of a coupe and sedan...
suvs, mini vans, cross overs, trucks can go as dark as they want int he back, but 70% on the 2 fronts

understand that you will not fail inspection though other than tint on the front windshield, so it becomes a discretionary law in the cops eyes..if he feels its to dark, he will give you a ticket..some cops carry around tint meters, but they really are just for show since just about ANY TINT is illegal..most cops do not care if its reasonable(where the 35% comes in) but understand that you still can get a ticket for it...

Any tint isn't illegal, vehicles come from the factory with tint. Also, you must have a moving violation inorder to be pulled over for tint. Lastly, It can be used as probable cause from what i've heard.

The only cars that come with tint are not cars but SUV's or Min vans and the 2 front windows don't have tint.
And he said that the tint on a car has to let in 70% or more, now my 20 % tint only let in 18% with the gauge or what ever kind of meter that was that he was using.

I wish i could have asked him to see how much light my front windshield was letting in.

And as for the Doctor Eye note or what ever it only works with some cops and this guy that got me did not care.

And if you look at the Doctor not in the PA DOT sit it says that the tint cant let less then 70% of light in.

And by the way most shops that go by the PA Dot Inspection book they will Fail your car if it has tint that it did not come that way from factory.

Look At this link it tells you what its allowed

Personally i'd go with 35% all around. You'll have the silverish tint to it and still look semi legal. My girls 04 subaru though has 15% on all four windows and a tint strip to match on the front. Hella Dark! My personal Opinion your tinting your windows for a reason either to help blockout the sun light and keep your interior from fading or just making the car look better, so don't go with anything 45% and higher it's a waste of money. As MisFitKim said, depending on what town, situation and cop too. If your ever up towards Harrisburg don't go through Camp Hill or Carlisle don't go through Middlesex Township! Haha

The only cars that come with tint are not cars but SUV's or Min vans and the 2 front windows don't have tint.

Sounds like more bull**** to me on the state level. Not allowed to have anything on your vehicle. **** that, if I have valuable **** in my car and want to protect it, I should be allowed to tint it to a reasonable level. FTP.

Any tint isn't illegal, vehicles come from the factory with tint. Also, you must have a moving violation inorder to be pulled over for tint. Lastly, It can be used as probable cause from what i've heard.

no tint is ever on a sedan or a coupe from the factory ..that is why it has to be 70%...trust me, its my job to know the law..

i have 35% all around on my Silver WRX and live in West Chester. I have been pulled over for rolling a stop sign and speeding a couple of times not once did the cop say anything about my tint, also got out of the tickets. Got pulled over once in Delaware leaving a friends place and the cop said he pulled me over because it was illegal in Del. to have the front windows tinted. He had a trainee with him and was trying to show off to her. I told him that he can take a look at my license, registration, and plates because my car is registered in PA and it isnt illegal in PA. He was like uhhhh, we will be right back. He goes to his car with my info and comes back 5minutes later and says you're right there isnt anything i can do because the car is registered in PA. He gave me a written warning and let me go.

I get pulled over every other week in Media and they always tell me it's because my tint is illegal. Then they see that I wasnt drinking and everythings in order and say have a good night. I live across the street from a bar... but still it's a little excessive.

<--- my tint is that dark.

I have a RED Ext. Cab truck with 5% on the 1/2 windows and the back window and 25% on the doors and I havn't been bothered (yet) in an area where the cops literally have nothing better to do. It's been rumored that the cops around here are "tint nazi's" but I havn't seen it yet.

I've been pulled over before strictly for tint (in a previous car) but the cop admitted to me that he was looking for something else and once everything checked out he let me go. But they can pretty much pull you over for anything and use tint as an initial excuse.

Years ago it used to be enforced by inspection mechanics, but they took the responsibility off of them and placed it on the police for enforcement.

knock on wood civic had 15% for a year and the integras been with me for about 2 months. just when i see cops, i at least put my window down. ive been told if cops can pretty much see you, theyll usually let you go fine. also if you hve a sunroof keep it open because light goes in and makes the windows look lighter

I have 15% i was pulled over twice by the same berks/lehigh regional cop bitchin about my tint then he tried tellin me my exhaust was illegal but i told him it was spt from the factory and he didn't have **** to say and haven't had another problem since everyone with tint just be careful where your at smaller townships seem to have the biggest problem and it's commenly used as an excuse just to search a car or reveal a DUI

BugEyeGuy

exactly what someone else said technically its illegal period so if your going to get tint go all out and get it dark as **** for your money worth plus it really adds that extra zing to your car when you dark it out

I have 15% on all windows but windshield and I've been pulled over once since getting the tint...it was by a statey too and he said nothing about my tint. Just watch what percent you go for since it often makes it hard to check your windows or look out the back when in reverse. I know I have that problem in my talon.
