View Full Version : Do Subarus burn that much fuel?

I've taken all the major steps towards joining the Subaru family, and am considering getting an '06 WRX. Problem is, I don't know if its gonna kill me in gas costs. Every car I've owned so far has been N/A, so stepping up to a turbo is a big deal for me, especially if its gonna cost me an extra bag of cash in fuel costs every month. Thoughts? Opinions?

I recently got a 06' wrx, up from a GLS Golf and I am spending probably an extra $10 everytime I full up because you have to put the premium in with the turbo. I am averaging around $40-$45 dollars everytime I fill up depending on where I buy it.

If you can contain yourself and stay out of the boost you can get very reasonable mileage. I've averaged upper 20's, even 30-ish mpg on the highway without a/c on.
Boost + revs just eats up the gas, but if you stay out of it you'll be really suprised.

I mean, it won't be the same as your Celica, but I think you'll be happy with a turbo :) Especially if you go with a manual.

Yea, I'm definitely going with a manual this time. It will be my 5th car and I'm just now going to learn to drive on a manual trans.

Problem is, I've always boought fairly slow cars, so I beat the piss out of them and redline through every gear to get the most out of it. So I'm affraid I'll be addicted to boost from the get-go and average about 3 mpg haha.

look who it is!!! where the hell have u been???

and also a good decision, how about an is300? or a new is350?

Don't worry about it, when you actually have low-end grunt you won't rev it as much. I rarely take my car past 4K on normal spirited driving cause the torque curve is just so strong it doesn't need any more. And when you do blast it to the redline it's that much more special. :)

its a major misconception that premium gas is far more expensive than regular gas... for example right now if regular gas is $2.50 then premium will probably be $2.70... thats a <5% increase, meaning if you get 10 gallons of gas it will cost you $27 instead of $25... thats nothing really in the grand scheme.
gas consumption however, is something different completely. i average 20-22 mpg and i'd say most of my driving is just cruising... mostly local driving with some highway... i've gotten high 20s before but its rare. i almost always hit 20-22 mpg no matter what. my car has basic bolt ons which i dont really think have affected my gas mileage much.

If u are worrying about gas make sure u don't get a sti. about 200 miles on 13 gallons.

I had a 2002 WRX sedan, auto. It did about 17mpg in Boston city traffic. On a long commute, say from Boston to Philly and back it would do a best of 25 mpg cruising at 75-80 mph most of the way.

Only mods to it were a K&N air filter... and trailer hitch.

Haha, I've been around. I actually looked at an is300, but insurance probably = selling first born.

No, I'm just looking at a WRX, possibly the TR for now. But 2006 + 4 years = 2010 STi for me :supz:

I believe its the Tuner Ready Version. Just basic WRX - No Foglights, climate control, heated seats, moonroof etc.

Cheaper too. Theres the Impreza WRX TR, than the Impreza WRX, Than Impreza WRX limited, than Impreza WRX STI.

I get right around 17-18mpg with 395whp. Don't listen to the 30mpg crap. This is my second Suby (1st was WRX). You will NEVER see anywhere close to 26+mpg.

Most WRXs will get about 20mpg average.

I swear on one trip back from the beach along 195 I got at least 28 mpg. Admittedly could just be a bad measurement (you know your s**t better than I do), but I know a few other WRX owners have gotten that kind of mileage (rarely, also could be a bad measurement, but just saying.)

I usually get between 19-23 mpg, 60/40 city/highway.

I used to get about 22MPG all of the time with aggressive shifting stock but now with my COBB Stage 1 I get about 17MPG! But this isn't my daily driver so I just park it when I can't handle the fuel costs.

It sucks, but after talking with the parents today I'm not sure that I'll be able to swing the cost of payments and insurance. I'm flipping baout 6grand from the paymetns of my Celica onto the WRX payments, and I'll be so in the hole it may not be owrth it to even consider trading it in. Plus I just called the dealership and I'm going to have the salesman calla round and try and fine me the cheapest rate. I already know what the payment for the car is going to be, but insurance will be a different story.

i have gotten between 18-22 mpg on my STi the entire time i have had it. That includes this past weekend running from allentown to the finger lakes, with my wicked rich base map, and also my trip cross country with a Cobb access port, three people, a packed full trunk, and the AC on the whole time. If I go out to beat on the car, i can run it down to 15-16ish, but it takes some work.

I have a 04 Cobb Stage 2 WRX and I get about 24mpg when I'm easy on the gas but when I drive hard it drops to around 20mpg.

My insurance is about $700/yr on the STI through Unitrin Direct.
granted I'm married, 28yr, with no accidents reported. Having a 2nd DD so you can list the car as "leisure" helps a ton too.

Payments are about $600/mth with 2yrs left

The problem is, I'm a 20 year old male, unmarried, and have no accidents, I may have points but I'm not sure if they've expired or not.

And like I said before, I'm flipping about 5 grand from my Celica onto the WRX payments, so The best option for me is to lease it, and that puts my payments at $452 for 48months. The salesman said basic mods can be made like intake, BOV etc., but changing the exhaust and so on may void the warranty, so I may have to wait until the summertime when my car is payed down a bit more before I actually pull the trigger on the buy option.

Mike don't listen to them with the modding please, my buddy is sueing audi right now over that and if it came down to it you would win in court cause they could never prove the mod caused the problem unless it really did which it won't.

I know, I know. It's just that I'll have to go on my own insurance now that my brother is turning 16 and getting a car. I don't want to sound like a spoiled kid, because I'm definitely not, I'm thankful for what I've got, but I've never payed my own insurance and I want to, it's just that I don't know if I'll be able to pay for it on a new car. I left a message for my salesman and Glanzzman asking him to find me some decent quotes and if it's something I think I can swing, I'll be at the new meet spot in my '06.

PS, BTW: Does anyone on here have an '06 WRX or STi nowadays?

650 a month for car payment and insurance? or just insurance? GOD DAMN!

Because of how much money I'm flipping on my trade, my only feasible option is to lease, at $452 a month for 48 months. If I wanted to buy the car it would be $674 for 48months........AKA rediculous

Also, I have to find work in the winter time because landscapers don't do well in the snow. I know, you are all thinking "Dude, don't you snow plow?" Yes, we snow plow, but all the snow lays on the property and prevents us from doing other work until it dries out. So I may be asking for a job in the "Wanted" forums in a few months.

Well to be honest what i would say to do is wait until the end of summer,i know that sucks, then have more money to put down on the rex have less owed on ur celica and be in a better spot. And yes i pay 650 a month for just insurance.

Alittle of both... i have no points but a few accidents, not all my fault but still. Actually i think i just suck at life. But yeah in my honest opinion wait to do this till you would not be struggling to do it.

$650/mo insurance! That is friggin nuts! Barry, i think you need to shop around, unless you have already done so? (which im sure you have) Get like a <$1,000 beater car and make that your primary driver, and the STi as your secondary (leisure) ride. I did that when i got my BMW and my insurance went down about $150/mo. Just my .02

Okay, back on topic people!!!!

God damn Barry, over $600 a month, thats rediculous.I only pay $800 every 6 months for my STI, and $210 a month for car payment. My Wrx was pretty bad on gas, id only get like 12 miles to the gallon, it felt like iw as driving a big ass dodge truck.

Well I hate to say it, but I think what I"m going to do is wait until the late spring/early summer to get my Rex. That way my Celica will be payed down a bit, I'll be able to put away a bigger downpayment by then, and hopefully that fact that Celica's have been discontinued will keep the value fo my car up a bit until then.

Subaru family, I'll see you soon.
