You have to be kidding me. Here's a short timeline

5 months ago - they started milling down the shoulder and paving
4 months ago - cutting out bad sections of concrete and replacing main roadway - no paving or milling
2 months ago - complete closures of 100 to 30 bypass
1.5 months ago - painting bridges light blue (???)
1 month ago - finished patching concrete roadway - it was terrible
Now - Milling down everything and paving over concrete

http://www.phillyroads.com/roads/PA-100/img1.jpg

The other day I ran over a small, sharp hole and blew out a tire - the sidewall has an inch hole in it!

WTF ARE YOU DOING PENNDOT???

yea man they suck.

they actually fixed a little bit of 202 south recently which was good. and thank god i dont go to WC too often because yes that stretch of 100 is horrible

how far down rt 100 south? i know rt 100 and rt 78 they added lanes and traffic lights for merging.

on rt 22, they did a similar thing. it was blacktop, they cut out the parts that sunk in and filled them with concrete. they then repaved it all with blacktop. that's penndot's new way to save money while still making a new roadway.

btw, i think you can have penndot pay for your tire. i'm not positive but i know all the other states do that.

That pic above was taken facing 202 south - so it's right before 100 ends.

How is that saving money? The only thing I can think is that the blacktop lasts longer because the concrete underneath doesn't continue to crumble as much.

to get reimbursed I would have to submit some kind of damage complaint form to penndot.

If you see a Dark Blue civic around 7AM coming your way very fast, run its me....LOL

I have been tempted on more than one occasion to jump in the closed lane and floor it, 15 mins to do 4 miles with a clutch sucks!!!!!!!

So are you guys planning to finish the construction before the start of 2010 or not....

on the other hand. ive noticed more small upgrades on 202. some of the small rough patches are being worked on.

im pretty happy about it

So - why don't you explain the logic behind resurfacing concrete then paving over with blacktop with it taking 6+ months to complete for a 2 mile stretch?

Cause its not that easy. You dont understand how strict penndot is with that ****. It takes time to do that kind of thing. It's not gonna happen over night.

tavenger5

It took them a couple months to mill down 76 from KOP to philly and repave it.

I understand repairing a road takes time.

95TurboDC2
10-07-2008, 06:39 PM
Plus there road restrictions. can only be out there from 9-3. Contending with traffic and all the other bull**** doesnt get us anywhere fast. Once the concrete is down then another machine comes in and takes out high spots. So once it looks done its not there still that b.s stuff that needs to be done.

Okay - I got an answer from a Civil Engineer that is familiar with the process...

(PCCP = Portland Cement Concrete Pavement - HMA = Hot Mix Asphalt - AADT = Annual Average Daily Traffic)

Overlaying PCCP with HMA is usually cheaper than full depth replacing the pavement. But the PCCP requires a lot of prep before it can be overlaid. It is common with many of these concrete highways done in the 60's to have failed in many spots and are worn and uneven especially at the joints.

The failing spots must be replaced first usually by sawcutting out a full piece of PCCP and pouring a new one. Grout injection is sometimes required to stabilize the slabs. All joints must be repaired. Uneven joints are grinded to match and the whole pavement may be grinded for smoothness prior to overlay. If there are overpasses (which there appears to be), you usually cannot raise the grade with an overlay. Thus a full depth repair may have been required. If all of this prep work is not done, the overlay will quickly have reflective cracking within a few years.

As for the timing, I am sure PennDot could have speeded it up by using a fixed completion date contract, limiting working days, incentive clauses, etc., but this comes at a premium cost and forces the contractor to use multiple crews. Most DOT's will only spend the extra cost in areas of high AADT or if the locals contest it during the design stages.

This makes complete sense. It's obvious though, that if the road had more traffic, pennDOT would've spent more money to get it done faster.

So you work for Allan A Meyerws/ American Infrastructure??? How long ya been there.. My Boyfriend used to be a mechanic there

Guys They do a FANTASTIC job, if thats who is doing the work, But they take thier time in doing it so its dojne right the FIRST time not like penndot who has to do things 20 million times to get it right. and they are likely making a S***LOAD of money off this. a fw years ago they got the turnpike deal.. estimated something like 180 MILLION for 30 miles of road, this was a few years ago.. im sure its way more now.

it union work dude, unions take forever to do things i used to work for one, and for what i got paid i didnt really care how fast things got done.

But honestly when has penndot ever done something rite? They really ****ed up the east side of erie a couple years ago and i cant imagine they would change there on this side of the state either.

I was coming back from Jersey last night. Progress on the PA Turnpike is great! Progress on 202 is great! And I've stayed away from 100 'cause I know it's still in the works. I drive over it a few times a day to/from work though. It's no big deal, just find the back ways! There are plenty of them.

Bad thing that this is the easiest way to work for me

i'll tell you what else is going on at this stretch of highway to hell which is totally AWESOME!!! an effin speed trap. 88 in construction zone gets you a nice raping by local law enforcement. props though to the dude that got me. the statie actually checked out the ride and said he just got himself a wrx he was gonna tune up. so instead of getting automatic lisence suspension i landed a ticket for a c-note. i'll take that along with "my lucky day" receipt. still that road blows!

the only way i would not be complaining is if they also turn that stretch of the road into the autobahn with same lack of speed enforcement. you don't hear about record death tolls in germany. i think either 202 or the rt 100 through nj section of turnpike would be excellent at 100mph.

i drive this stretch of road quite often for work. this has been the slowest road improvement that i have seen in PA for a while. They did the 76 KOP to Philly stretch faster than the 100 stretch. I couldnt figure out what i was seeing the other day. After putting the new pavement down they were out there cutting into it every 25-30 feet or so. Not sure what benefit that has other then to have the road crumble faster.

They're called expansion joints. Concrete is under the blacktop. Concrete moves with temp a lot more than blacktop. If it didn't have any room to expand/contract it would crumble.

I was on 100 yesterday and the road felt worse than it was before. Just seemed so bumpy and what not. I think they are repaving some parts that don't need to be bothered with.
