My daily driver is a 95 850 turbo wagon. I didn't think that volvo's could be fast until I saw a video of one running low 12's beating a few Supra's.
All I did to mine was K&N drop in filter and chip and I am putting down 223hp to the wheels. Not bad for a wagon.
What year S40?

I drive a '99 V70 (yes, wagon.)... perfect car to learn to drive with, but it's growing a little... uninspired. The turbo versions aren't so bad though.

And I saw that volvo turbo video too. i think it was called "flying brick." Pretty cool, too bad mine's FWD and non-turbo.

I drive a Volvo 850 Turbo. It's a sedan. No one suspects the kid in the grey Volvo because their grandmother drives one. Let me tell you they put out good numbers and got gobs of torque at low rpms. either you drove an S60R or a V70R because the S70R is not available in america. A very select few have converted their S70's to R specs. Go to volvospeed.com if you wanna see some sick Volvos. I'm looking at getting rid of my 850 and upgrading to either an S70 T5 or a V70R.

On Volvospeed one of the Moderators has a V70R, which is a wagon, puts down 300+whp.

Its about time people give volvos some respect. Too bad the s40 is probably one of the worst volvos. But yeah theres nothing better on another drivers face as you pull ahead in a volvo.

Yeah it's worse than being beat by a saab. But it's funny how most people here seem to think european cars are german and that's it. Some of the more enlightened ones know of italian cars, but over all the rest of the continent gets no love.

The S80 has about as much performance capability as a rowboat. In my opinion it's a luxury saloon type vehicle the whole twin turbo S80 thing was a great idea but made poor hp numbers and was just too heavy. I have low expectations for the new S80. I'd love to pick up an S70 T5 Manual but they're so hard to come by.

the 2007 s80 v8 is a different animal all together. they dropped the t6 engine because it was a piece, a twin turbo 6cyl. that put out less than 250hp. the v8 puts out 311 and gets better mpg. the 07 v8 also comes with awd and 6 speed auto geartronic trans. compaired to the crap fwd gm trans that came with the earlier s80s. the s70 t5 is a sweet car, like i said earlier i just picked one up for my sis. im not a fan of the manual on the older cars though. they were sloppy and not a lot of fun to drive. the new cars on the other hand, such as the r with the close ratio spaceball shifter and the new s40 and v50 shift much better and are more fun to drive.

i think the only way to bring a younger crowd to the c30 is to make it more affordable. the s40 v50 was supposed to bring in a younger crowd but the price tag was too high. even a stripped model was 26k+, while a fully loaded one is more than a decently equipped s60. hopefully the c30 will be lower if its going to be popular with a younger market.

96Stang
11-11-2006, 04:20 PM
yeah i agree...its gonna end up costing way too much for any of the younger crowd to afford...and for the pricetag they will want..why not jst get something different and better...cause the car is nice...but there are nicer...idk...tough call

according to the website the c30 is going to start at 22,700. for the one with the painted kit and nice options it is closer to 30k, but look at the mk5 gti... thats in the high 20's fully loaded.

that looks sweet, which model is that?

Oh Volvo...been driving them for nearly a decade now...

One of EVOLVE's (http://www.evolvecars.com) tuned 2004 S60R's.

First car I drove was a 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo...Loved that car, but had to sell it for miscellaneous reasons  (I'd still be driving it today). For a little while, I was driving a 2002 S60 AWD - Naturally aspirated and complete trash...if you ARE going to buy a Volvo, get a turbo, pleeeease...

This past October I got my hands on my 2004 S60R (http://m3nt0s.no-ip.com/S60R/Oct5/3-800.jpg). Only had the time (and money) to do very minor things, but will have more in the future. We also sold our 2005 Mini Cooper (Non-S) for a 2008 Volvo C30.

For the price of a Volvo, you can buy much better performance or much better comfort...but I think the brand makes for a happy medium between the two. Regardless, there is something satisfying about a turbo-charged brick flying down the road...

BTW - I really wanna get my R on an AWD dyno...any suggestions for the Philly area? And I do have a talent for bringing dead threads back from ancient crypts...even if they are only 5 or 6 lines down...

If you are really serious about it, check out www.volvospeed.com. That is a great site with a GREAT forum and really good resources. My name is Oreo931 on there too.

Look into getting a T5 or Turbo model. You will be very sorry if you get an n/a. They dont have too much power and there isnt much room for upgrading. As far as DD status, its one of the best in my opinion. Although they might not be the sportiest cars around, they are right in the middle of a sports car and a luxury car in terms of the car overall. The 95+ 850's and the 98+ s70's are great cars. Gas mileage depends on the kind of driving that you do. I get 20mpg city and 26-27mpg highway in my 850. The 850 turbo's do not come with a manual transmission, but it is possible to get an s70 t5/turbo with a manual transmission. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask, or check out that site.

I dont mind not having much power...i hope to get this strictly as a dd and not planning on modding...i would plan to buy a seperate project car to work on with this as my dd...there is a 98 s70 t5 on autotrader with 138k on the clock for $3000...i think that sounds like a good deal but not positive

PM me the link and I would be happy to give you my opinion. As long as the car was taken care of, mileage shouldnt matter too much. The only expensive problems that these cars have are tranny failures (which happen ~170k-210k if the tranny wasnt taken care of) and rear main seal leaks (can happen any time if the engine wasnt taken care of). My yellow currently has 176k and it runs like a champ!

Edit: I also have a '98 s70 n/a that my sister usually drives. It has 133k on the clock and is going strong as well.

double edit: the s70 t5's make 240 hp stock. Thats a pretty decent amount of power
