I think we'll be okay. there are so many physicists and amazingly talented people from all around the world working on this that there shouldn't be any room for mistakes. they've been working on it for 20 or so years dumping billions of $ into it. also, there is already a large hadron collider somewhere else in the world (I forget where) although it's not nearly as massive as this one is, hence why they built it because they need more energy. there used to be a countdown site that showed when they would "divide by zero" but it's been down for a while.
we wouldn't feel anything anyway if a huge black hold appeared so that's, at least, reassuring lol
I'm pretty excited to see if they find out if there is a Higgs particle and if their assumptions are correct, which is basically what this whole thing is about.

09-09-2008, 08:59 PM
also...
my understanding is this:
in order to create a black hole the protons would have to be moving at the speed of light, but in this experiment it's %99.9 the speed of light. so if that's the case then there should be nothing to worry about.

i also heard of the ortega collider, basicly its this massive puerto rican that tries to inhale a cheese steak with out chewing. several hours later he tears a new hole into the space time continium. leaving a doc brown in his pants.

considering we are, at this point, unsure about what happens in a black hole (or the other side) I'm going to say... you, we, scientists, everyone... no one has any idea if we'd feel anything or not.
All we have is theory right now...
Hawking believes that, since matter is neither created nor destroyed, and that the common assumption is that everything sucked into a black hole IS destroyed, that while we are destroyed in this universe, our energy is still present in an alternate universe.
I believe that he also said that due to the distortion of time look at a black hole, that someone witnessing a human being sucked in would see them being pulled apart at the atomic level, but the person experiencing this would not realize it is happening.
But who the hell knows for sure since we have no experience with black holes at this level
