OK... now that i got ur attention lol... quick question for u honda guys... i have a 93 civic with a SOHC vtec swap, its a D16Y8 to be exact.. well last night after working out at a buddies house, his little brother came home and he has a built B20 boosted hatch, and we got to talking about our cars and long story short, he had his old SKunk2 ECU from his GSR in his trunk, and told me to try it out in my car... i hooked it up, and went for a ride..and wow..it made a huge difference.. its chipped to engage vtec at 6200 instead of 5200:cool:, and it bumped the rev limiter to 10,000:bigeek::roll: *like that was necessary*:o so baiscally i installed the ECU..and the car runs great, a HUGE improvement over the stock ecu, only problem is as soon as she starts pulling real hard, i have to shift due to the fact that im at 8k rpms.
my question is this..
since this ecu is for a 96 DOHC VTEC GSR motor...will it harm my little SOHC VTEC Y8??? like i said..the car runs great, the best its been since i got it, and i definatley noticed the gains.. i just didnt know if this would throw up a red flag for anyone. Im more or less worried about the A/F ratio's being to lean or something dumb happening..
also..what would u expect to pay for a used Skunk2 ecu.. we havent decided on a price, and i really dont want to pay more then its worth..

ummmmm the ecu's map is for a completely different motor. The a/f ratio has to be off. I'd recommend not running that again unless it's tuned for your motor. You're asking for problems.
You've got an obd1 ecu, just get it tuned if you want more power.
I wouldn't purchase an obd2 ecu that is probably just chipped. my toosense

Yea its not a good idea at all especially with the 10K redline big flag for a stock head to say the least, and again on a stock motor changing vtec cross over isn't going to really gain you anything, you are probably only feeling gains on the butt dyno because its leaning out, I'd say you won't be happy with the results after running the ECU for a while...in all situations its best to get a tune specifically for your car and motor...

far enough to make it not a good idea. :)

Agreed, why get something that you have no idea what it is really doing to your car...its just not money well spent and since it says skunk2 on it you'll probably pay way to much...I chipped Ecu can be had for under $100 and that basically all you are getting...
Better idea for you:
Go to the junk yard, snag a ECU P06 or P28(if you can find one) send it off to Xenocron and get it chipped with a base tune for you setup, that will be safer then a random ECU...and when you save up a little more money or add some more mods go get it tuned or buy a wide band and try and tune it yourself after researching a little...

the kid only wants 60 bucks for it, my biggest question is this, aside from the rediculously stupid redline.. am i running the risk of blowing the car up by DD'ing with this ecu..??

keep driving it like that and let us know.

if you shift at the regular redline you will be fine. you have a y8, so i know you wont spin over your redline.
if its a chipped ECU 60 bucks is steal. a chipped ecu (IIRC) goes for around 150 new. see if you open it up if you can put a different chip in it.

i never have nor will i ever over rev this engine.. i shift at the MAXIMUM 8k rpms.... it stops making power at 8 so why go any higher?? the car falls on its face.. im not worried about over reving at all.. my thing is, if i daily drive it and hit vtec every now and then, will it blow the car up.. i wish i could see how different the maps are

if its running lean down low, sure itll blow up. its not worth the extra 5 hp for a random map thats running super lean.
if you want to make power with the mods you have, call up xenocron and he can put you on the dyno and get a full tune for it.

i just called a buddy of mine, and he told me that the fuel maps are differnet, but not far enough out of wack that it will blow the car up he said the only thing that i can do is over rev the engine by missing a shift. i checked my spark plugs and they arent white, so im guessing the car isnt running to lean or it would show white obviously on the tip of the plug.. ive had it in for about 50 miles now so im guessing if it was leaning out it would show signs of that after a few hard pulls... so thanks for all ur input!

take the top cover off if it has a socket with a removable chip, grab it for $60...send Chris at Xenocron a Email asking for a new chip set up for a y8 and whatever mods you have, the last chip I got from him was $20 and he sent me 2 chips with different maps to play with for my set up, this was of course for a turbo car but I've been running it on the basemap he sent and the car ran great when I actually drove it...N/A basemap is gonna be safe for you to do daily Chris knows his stuff and probably make you a map thats better then your mystery map...

Good idea, now pull that ECU out before you miss shift and blow that thing up, just looking out for ya!

lol i guess thats the only problem, the only way it would blow up is if the thing over revved...

if it was making you 40 more hp maybe it would be worth it, but it isnt. take it out before your next post or troll said hes going to ban you.
