Just like any car...it all depends on the maintenance and how it was taken care of throughout its life..

This is a very broad question...

There are motors over 200k and there are ones that spin rod bearings at 140k, there are ones which headgaskets go randomly at 100k.

If you do all the maintennance I could see 150k reliably

i had a 2000 forester i put 125k on with no problems and still got a good trade in for another forester. Routine maintenance & synthetic oil. I cant remember but i think i put something like 65k on the original yokohama tires because i only bought tires once.

the reason im wondering is - i found 2 2001 IMPREZA 2.5 RS in around my way - and one has about 60,000, the other is at 117,000 miles - common sense says go for the way lower miles, but then the place wants like 4 K more than the other dealership...

i was just wondering on average how many miles could the engine/ trans be good for... - i know good up keep on the car will make it last longer - im just trying to get an estimate for ( the standard tune up every few thousand miles ) on this kinda car...

I heard of rumors of certain NA Subaru 2.5L motors (EJ25??) blowing headgaskets, but that was IIRC only DOHC models. I think that the 2000 and 2001 had an SOHC setup which remedied that but dont take my word for it.

Only the 98s were DOHC

spend a few thousand extra and get the lower mileage car... you dont need to just be concerned about the engine, but all the other wearable parts as well.

^ Wurd. The one has nearly double the mileage...which = double the wear on all parts. I agree. If you can swing the extra $$, that would be the best way to go.

ones goin for 9.2K other almost 14K !!!!! i check the KBB on the lower mileage car - its only worth 10.8K used in AMAZING condition

which is a huge rip off - u werent kidding !!!!

Dont buy those from dealerships. A 100k mileage RS shouldn't be going for more than 7k on stock driveline.

That 60k one in the like 9-10k range

this is about as easily answered as, "how many tricks can a hooker last?"

It's not so random considering all of them do it at almost exactly 100k

My friends LGT was treated like crap all it's life (engine wise), leaking oil and everything, lasted till 156k I believe. The headgaskets were also done like CRAP according to his brother who was a subaru mechanic at the time.

My dad's old legacy lasted till 275k...kept running but he ended up getting sick of the torn up seat...other than that and the clutch was going again, it ran amazingly.

can both sellers provide detailed maintenance records? Thats usually one of the first things i ask. If they are hesitant on their reply of how often or what they use, i turn away. Last thing you need to do is drive off and have an engine seize up. The lower milage more likely would be the better away unless it was beaten to piss versus the higher one that was religiously maintenanced

The only headgasket issues of predominant majority were the 98s. The headgasket design flaw was fixed in the SOHC models. Do they blow headgaskets? yeah.

Do all cars have the ability to blow headgaskets? Yeah.

Check out www.rs25.com and see how many high mileage EJ251/EJ253s there are and they are damn reliable motors. Mine was at like 125k when I sold it and still strong as hell.

I've got 130k on my WRX, and I beat the crap out of it daily. Nothing has broken that wasn't my fault. Subaru reliability, so far for me, has been great.

My friends sisters both have SOHC subaru's, one blew the HG at 102k and the other at 108k. His DOHC went around that time too.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge subaru fan, I would never buy any car that didn't have a subaru or toyota name on it. I can get over a little headgasket problem considering how amazing the cars are other wise.
