Omar_MSP
08-10-2008, 04:10 PM
i graduated in december of 06.
all i'm saying, not all instructors are the same. i didn't like the school, one instructor would mash information into your head until you got it. he wouldn't give up until he knew i knew what he was talking about. others, well they'd just say, i did my job, you didn't get it? o well.
i hated the school for that reason. but now i'm all schooled up, trying to get in the field. nobody calls for offers. its slow now probably.

the way i look at it is..if u dont put any effort into it u aint gonna get anything out of it. they cant force u to learn u gotta do that **** on your own.but i know of a few kid that acctully got good jobs leavin uti
but 05suby u living up there?

i said ****.
Omar_MSP
08-10-2008, 05:00 PM
anyway, goodluck, everybody learns different. i learn better in groups, and with hands on.
it is money well spent because it looks good for any automotive job offer. i did Ford FACT aswell, i loved FACT btw, great instructors.
pinacup7
08-10-2008, 05:25 PM
Yea you will learn more in the first three weeks in Ford FACT than all of UTI.
Omar_MSP
08-10-2008, 05:29 PM
indeed, FACT was the best experience i ever had. it was fun, exciting, i learned soo much. past all my test with A's because of how they taught us. i felt good because people would fail the hands on test and i would figure out the problem. finding a problem, blown fuses, finding shorts to power when something stays on when it supposed to be off, etc. i'll never forget FACT.

+1. UTI consists of learning strictly from textbooks, with no hands-on experience. Mine as well start reading lessons online; That's the experience you'll get from UTI.

If you work in the automotive industry, you might qualify for tuition reimbursement. So basically going to school for free or cheap.

my buddy got into a toyota dealer with no experience other than highschool tech school for automotive. they started him out as a helper and now hes by himself going flat rate. ...oh yea and i think they provided him books to study for the ASE's because i know hes been getting them.
so yea maybe it was just a lucky shot. but then i was offered a job at a different dealship and again i have no experience other than highschool tech school.
the difference between going to school and going right to work is with school you pay a **** ton at 1st and then get paid maybe a little more right when you get a job. when you go right to work without school, you start out at the bottom, but you dont have to pay a **** ton.

From my exprence going to lincoln tech and having friends that went to other tech schools such as uti and atc i find that what you put in it is what you get out of it. And for bmw step and other programs like that, they are nice but you dont get any real world experence. You get bugged cars. That never happens in the real world. You would probably learn more for being in the field for that time then going to those programs. We get kids out of step and 80 percent are wastes. Some are good. but its like that everywere. I have been with bmw for about 4 years now i am 23 and i am a bmw master. Sorry for rambling on and i know some teachers are difficult but aslong as you go everyday and work. You should do good. And dont trust them getting a job for you. you have to go beat down doors and look yourself

I'm in it now and i must say i'm not very impressed with the program. Some teaches pretty much give you the answers before the test so people just sleep through the power point and make it through the class. But i only have 4 classes left and i am out of there. but everyone has an opinion, you will learn stuff for sure.

08-12-2008, 11:00 PM
I'm gonna throw in my 2 cents as help to anyone interested in going to UTI and nothing else. I have personally never talked to anyone that has ever gone to atc, lincoln tech, wyotech or any other tech school about there experiences so I'm not going to comment about any of those schools just based on "word of mouth".
I went into UTI knowing almost nothing about how cars really work or how to fix real-life problems, yeah I could put bolt-ons on my wrx, and change my brake pads, big deal. . .
I learned alot by going to UTI and even more, especially electrical, by taking and completing Ford Fact.
When it comes to the classes, it has been said in this thread a few times; you get out what you put in; and I couldn't agree with that more. Most of the kids that aren't successful or say that they didn't learn anything, it's because they put in little or no effort.
When it comes to the instructors, in my personal experiences if there is 1 instructor that doesn't want to give you any further help, then there was another one in the next room that would help no problem. Some of them are there to just pay there bills, and others, most I'd say, are there to help you learn, you just need to ask for it, and respect them, which a lot of the guys that go there just can't seem to do.
As for Class Room time Vs. Lab time, it was almost always 50/50, and although some of the labs were cheesy or unrealistic, they all in turn helped me to understand the point that was trying to be taught.
I now work in the field and I personally feel that without the training I received @ UTI, I would not only be struggling to understand the problems that are occurring in the cars that I am working on, but also that I may not have the interest to continue to work in the field because of my lack of knowledge, but again this is me personally.
I graduated on may 31st, 08, and I work @ a Honda dealer (not my first choice, but I'm happy to have gotten a job at any dealership the way things are going in the industry right now in terms of hiring, and I'm very happy working there). When I went in for the "interview" they were impressed by the curriculum that I completed @ UTI, and I do believe that along with my positive attitude, and willingness to learn, my diplmoa/resume from UTI helped me to secure my position at the dealership. They started me off as an entry level tech and said that with time they well be sending me to classes as I advance in there shop.
Yeah I spent $30,000 for 15 months @ UTI, but with time I will pay it back. Compare that to any major university and it equals just 1 year, where you would need to add at least another 3-4 years on top of that just to get a decent degree. In my opinion it was the best 30,000 I ever spent, because now I have a good job, and a good future.
I hope no one takes this as a ramble, but more as an opinion from someone who actually enjoyed there learning experience @ UTI and is moving forward in the field because of it. . .
Peace and Good Luck

my friend is in UTI for diesel I am gonna ask him how it is. i went to votec for a year for auto service i was one of the best in my class. i understood alot. most of the time the teacher would pair me up with a certain kid because me and him got along so well and got the work done that needed to be even if we didnt act serious in class we still got **** done. at one point i wanted to go to UTI but then i decided. i dont look at working on cars as a career i look at it as a hobby. i work at a dealership as a detailer/lot attendent making 10.00 an hour its not bad and i get to talk to some of the mechanics there. they're all nice guys and very helpful of whatever questions i may have. i even get discounted maintance.

I graduated from UTI in exton 2 years ago.
Hot rod was a waist... the tuning they talk about is just adding intake and exaust and running cars on the dino... Most teachers didnt really give a **** about thier job. Although there were a few instructers who were awesome.
I felt like i was taken... then i went down to NTI for Nissan advanced technical training NATT. THAT WAS THE ****! Just like Fact the teachers know thier stuff. Know how to get it acrossed and they are more leniant.
If you dont do fact or some other extra training... you just get taken for your money.
I went to the NTI in north carolina. Lemme tell you guys, some of the funniest mother ****ers i ever met and the instructors were SOOOO damn good at getting things out there that if you were half awake everyday you would get it.
Compared to my coworker who went to some community collage i kill him in diag stuff. Its great.
