im no scientist but i believe i learned why they do this from "storm stories" or something like that. I think its something similar to the lightning bolt trying to find something "ground" its self to. Apparently, those spider-like small bolts are "feelers" for the big bolt that we see. Like i said, i vaguely recall this from the weather channel or something like that.

I wonder if static electricity from our bodies react the same way...

yep, and the ground is usually metal sticking in the ground
