Is half black and was born in England to British parents.....

Not that it matters, but I had NO idea. I didn't know until I read this:

"The Rev. Al Sharpton will attend an invite-only screening of the new HBO documentary "The Black List: Vol. 1" on Aug. 14 at the Prince Music Theater (1412 Chestnut). Filmmakers Elvis Mitchell, a former New York Times writer, and Timothy Greenfield-Sanders will participate in a Q&A session along with Sharpton and producers Payne Brown and Michael Slap Sloane. The documentary features interviews with prominent African-Americans including Sharpton, former Temple women's basketball coach Dawn Staley, Slash of Guns N' Roses/Velvet Revolver, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Toni Morrison, Colin Powell, Chris Rock, Keenan Ivory Wayans and Serena Williams. It premieres at 8 p.m. Aug. 25 on HBO."


But I'm still having trouble understanding how he is "African-American", since he is just as caucasian as he is black, and futhermore, he was BORN IN ENGLAND to british parents. Does this qualify as African-american?? News to me.

Well, if he is part black, part white, and lives in America, technically, he could be classified as African American. Hell, if you are from South Africa, and are Caucasian, living in the US, to me, you are still African American.

according to my manager, who looked it up on Wiki today when i told her, she said he was born in UK.

either way, I've never known him to embrace or talk about his afro-ness. I mean, now that i think about it, he does look mixed. Its just that since GNR in the 90s... i've never heard anything about this.

and i still don't get why you are considered "black" if you have 1% of african heritage. that don't make sense to me. Isn't he also "white" then? When he fills out forms, what does he do, check both boxes?

I guess i thought it was up to the individual to classify themselves. Ie. Barack calls himself black, probably cauz he looks more black than white. But hell, my sister (Italian) looks more black than he does right now with her cancer-tan... is she black too then? :D x2. USA is SO f'd up with labels and such.

they do kindof look alike. I assumed they were biological until i heard she was adopted. Her real folks were druggie friends of Lionel or something like that. and he volunteered to adopt her to give her a good life.

I'm of mixed race, and on most forms today they have a "2 or more race" box and I just check that.

Otherwise I used to just check black or white...depending how I was feeling that day.
