UPDATE
I picked up an 01 CBR F4i this past weekend. Never been dropped with 5000k miles. 100% stock. cant wait to ride it. i start my MSF course next week.
cut the r6 and 636 off the list, katana too. yzf thundercats are good and any cbr 600 between the f1 hurricane and the f3 are excellent. dont forget about old yami fzrs. considered the sv650? some of those get down to 3k

hey don't forget i got my fzr1000 for sale :D but really start off on a good size bike for you if you feel comfy on a 600 go around and sit on all the 600's you can and find the one that has the right feel for you. then start looking at the power factor if the r6 fits you the way you feel the best then go for it. just respect it all bikes are fast its up to the rider on how fast they get it and if they can control the braking. i started on a vfr 750 and never looked back. i sat on 500's 600's and 650's but i felt the best on a 750. even the vfr 750 or 800 would be a good bike to look at because they are touring bikes good luck on your search!

Cbr is the best 600 made IMO but there usually expensive. Finding a bike in the winter or fall will also save you a few bucks. Juts remeber shiny side up!

miles on a bike dont mean jack as long as the service was done, call people and go check out some bikes. im sure you can even convince a member on here to go with you and look them over/test it for ya. zerious did for me and id be willing as well as long as it fit my schedule

starter bike i wouldnt use a cbr...i felt they were WAY to wide near the gas tank. R6 or something would suite your purpose well...i mean idk then again i sat on "on sale"'s old F4 CBR and it wasnt that bad look into older kawa's

SV650 is a sport bike. They just did it in a naked older style with a v-twin.
The SV650S comes with fairings, lower handle bars and a different location for the foot pegs:

SV650 with clubman style/clipon handle bars is dead sexy:

I like my SV better than 600 crotch rockets. 600 i-4's take off like a bat outta hell once you get the rpm's up, but theyre useless down low. I can pass cars at 40mph in 6th gear on my SV. A rocket would need to downshift to 2nd to make that happen.
The SV is a great starter bike for someone who basically knows how to ride, but is new to street. Its tame enough to get the basics down without killing yourself, but has enough balls not to be boring.
FYI, I have a buddy with an 02 SV650 naked in black for sale with 6200 miles for $3500.

you are seriously suggesting a pizza pie sprocketed 750 as a starter bike?

The one bad thing about getting a "Sport Bike" is that if you drop it. And you will. I mean parking lot drop. The fairings are freaking worth their weight in gold. I guess for 3000 it's probably going to have a few scratches already but seriously look into the SV650/S or Honda Nighthawk, Kawasaki Ninja 250, GS500. Take the money you save and buy some nice gear! Get really good gear now and you can just save it when you upgrade in a year or two to a sportier bike. Plus the beginner bikes really hold their value quite well. You could ride all season and sell it next season and only see 200-500 dollars in price drop when you resell it. Sit on a few and see what feels comfortable but I can tell you for a fact that most of the bikes I listed are more comfortable than 600's.

thanks for the advice. i just dont want to get a ninja 250 and then get tired of it after a month. i am definitely looking into the SV650s. but they get expensive on some of the newer ones with a fairing kit i like the look though. ive found a couple good deals on some CBR F3 and F4is. also the yzf600 seem to be pretty cheap. here is my list so far of possible bikes. any suggestions?

I bought a 07 gsxr 600 as my first starter bike and have been fine i did take the safety course before hand just to be safe but like driftingrx5.7 said just respect the bike and youll be fine. I would go for whatever you like and feel comfy on as stated earlier. I have a buddy selling a red suzuki RF 600 R 1995 (i believe it is) i think he was looking to get 3grand for it. it is a sweet bike and its a sport bike with fairings and all. Its got a yoshi pipe and brand new tires. I rode with him alot till he left for school but i told him id help him out if i could with selling it and granted he is a good rider he could keep up with my bike pretty well. if your interested let me know

my friend recommended i get Fuel Injected. i looked up the bikes and it seems the CBR started FI in 2001 and R6 (2003). damn there goes my budget. most of these bikes are almost 4-5k. might as well just get a newer one then.

It never felt big/or heavy to me at all. I think the major difference is the riding position... The handlebars are higher and wider and give more confidence. My Bro has a Aprillia RSV Mille that was a mutch more difficult bike to ride and it was a lot lighter. This has enough low end grunt that you can keep the RPMs down on it and still tool around very easily. It was my first bike and for the first few months I just didn't take it above 5gs.
