Hey all, just got my car back from Jim's shop (Vsix)...running awesome...just wondering who here runs a big K&N or other brand air filter?

I've gotta 9" on my MAF pipe routed in front of the headlight opening and it really sounds like a BOV to me. Anyone else have 'whooshing' sound w/o a bov? haha...never really had this big a filter and its kinda cool and different. I'll post pics this afternoon.

yes, between my short ram filter and my 4" bellmouth dp, all i hear is air swooooshhhh- i don't need a BOV at all!

Mine is a pretty large K&N style filter (3" intake), but I don't hear any wooshing out of anything other than my GReddy Type RS.

That's awsome to hear that it is running. I better get a ride tonight. Anyway Mom's car makes the same kinda sound. She loves going past kids and doing it cause she's a 45 year old woman lol. She has I think the 3 maybe 3.5 inch chrome kit that puts the 9" right about level with the bottom of the car. She needs to get Exhaust next though and turn the boost up some.

yea i think she has the 3"...3.5" looks HUGE and the fuel vapor canister has to be relocated. (mine is laying on its side lol) yea man, no fuel leaks too! josh of j.s. performance did an awesome job on it :)

jim is going little by little and tweaking my car...should be pretty mean soon

Yeah her's is just laying there I think. My dad may have fab up something but I forget.

When I put an intake on my WRX, I noticed the same sound. With the stock blow off valve, the air is dumped back into the intake when you let off the gas. That's the sound you hear. There is less sound restriction with a big cone filter, so the sound is more noticable.

yea, my short ram from AEM was loud as hell. People thought I had an exhaust on (at the time I didn't) by how loud the car was. Sometimes I turn off the radio to listen to the cool whoosing sound.

My AEM was loud with the stock one, then it got crushed and now I have someones spare DSM one on there that got fabbed up at a picnic.

So, is this "big air filter" thread innuendo for something else? Or are air filters related (inversely or not) to e-wang?

TehWagon

if so than i've got one... ?

 why did I have to buy the short ram!

Women can indeed have e-wang.

 why did I have to buy the short ram!

Now, this was originally about air-filters being indicitive of e-wang. You've brought length of tubing in. It should be noted that a short, thick ram with a big filter can provide better experience than a long thin tube with a small filter.

disconcur- only if the tube has a bend in it. nyuck nyuck nyuck.

Now that we are completely off topic.....

I had a long cold air intake. I cut it in half to make it a short ram. Does that mean that I have shortened my e-wang as well?

It was filter size, not tube length.

And no. You always had a small e-wang.

it's not the length of your intake, it's how it performs...

how is this off topic- i'm still talking about intakes  what?!??? :bigeek:

That's gotta hurt.

Performance, that is.

I always thought it was the diameter of the tube and not the length.

slightly back to topic- anyone ever heard of intakes causing misfire codes?

This thread has really turned into something special.

Mine sends a misfire code but only after about an hour of performance....

I haven't heard of an intake directly causing a misfire code, but my car started to misfire when I put the intake on originally. After a few hours of driving, I think the ECU compensated for it and the misfire went away.

If you are having misfires, and have tried everything else, take out the intake for a few days. Maybe it will help.

seriously? why an hour?

*edit* sorry i keep posting too slow- i meant that in response to greddycivic-guy...

muddy- makes sense... yes once i get my head out of my rectum i am going to swap the stock airbox back on and see if that helps (incidentally, it misfires more when it's very humid, not sure if that means anything?)

sorry- not trying to hijack the thread... this has been on my mind lately- can ya tell?!

nevermind I gotta get my mind out of the gutter.....

My intake was fine after instal (did it myself) and I haven't had one problem with it!

It's called shooting blanks.

But no, really, I've heard of it happening on saturns. When the tube is too big, it's not creating enough volocity in the air to the TB, usually because it's milling about in the oversized tube, thus, while it's trying to flow to the plenum, it won't get enough air through a runner to a cylinder, and cause it to go way rich, which could cause the plug to not fire. You can increase velocity by going from a big diameter tapering to a small diameter, or just get a smaller one all around.

I have actually never heard of this but thanks for info!

No problem.

Not many people have. It really wasn't DSM's who invented the quad jackstand stance. Saturns invented and perfected it. DSM's just get seen more like that for some reason.

"I have a service engine light on in my 98SL2! What does this mean?"
"Your engine is inside the engine bay and is currently on."

I'd like to try swapping over to a bigger airfilter. Not sure what kind of difference that would make. Anyone got any info on that.

Btw, misfire codes could be related to an air leak after a filter install. Very common to install an air filter and not have it seat right at the bottom. Possible the clamp is off a bit or the tube is just bent a bit. Also, with older cars rubber intake hoses might crack causing a leak.

yea- just checking one thing in a haystack... the car didn't start misfiring till after i installed the utec, but the utec is fine. that's a WHOLE other thread....

Ok that makes sense I was talking to a couple of UTI guys with an STI in west chester the other night and they mentioned it....Wasn't quite sure what they were talking about. Thanks though

no worries- with all of us having different kinds of cars, it's hard to keep track! i barely know enough about my sube, let alone everybody else's performance products!
