Long story short I am titling the Beetle and the notary wants to put it down as exempt, I say I know the mileage is 109851 so put it down lol. I think just because it qualifies doesn't mean I have to have it that way. Any classic/Antique car guys in here have an opinion on whether or not it matters that much on a car that is 42 years old?

I'd like to know as well... I guess due to the age the state really doesn't care how much mileage is on it?

After 25 y/o a vehicle is emissions exempt. But a 15 y/o w/ classic tags is not emissions exempt, correct?

Actually I was reading up on the dmv website and I found a section that said 10 years or older but that just didn't seem right.

My 240 is exempt under odometer. It's only a 93. If it's over 100,000miles on it then you are exempt.

Well the list of acceptable reasons to be exempt are: (copied directly from PennDot form)
Vehicles more than 10 years old
Vehicles titled as a Commercial Implement of Husbandry or Implement of Husbandry
Vehicles titled as a Special Mobile Equipment
Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 16,000 pounds or higher

your also emissions expemt if you dont drive your car more then 5000 miles a year as the case w/ my cav. the only 2 cars ive ever owned that werent mileage exempt is my cav and my 94 probe, all my other cars had over 100 k

^You sure about the emissions exempt thing for cars driven under 5k a year? I had thought that it was only for pre-cat(under '75) cars in pee-aye. That would seem hard to regulate. I do know that I once got a cop good and pissed when he had to crumple up a $75 ticket he wrote me upon finding out I had a '74 :).
The original question was answered, no? I never bought a car newer than '91 and do'nt recall anything relating to the odometer and titling. Good luck with the bug regardless.

come to think of it... all the cars I've owned pre 90's were odo exempt...

any car drivin less then 5000 miles can be emissions exempt. the cav is a 03 when it got inspected last i hadnt drivin it more then 5000 miles, due to having a secondary car. if you look youll see that some cars from New car dealers have emissions expemt stickers on them as well as cars/trucks older then 75 that dont need emissions

You're right about the mileage but I think it is 3000 not 5 in pa. But yeah basically I want to know how hard I should argue with the notary over this since I don't think it's too late to have it set with the correct mileage.

all theyll ask is if you know the milage and all you gotta say is that its over 100k, i think theyll know enough to just put exemt on it anyway since its what a 60's bug or 70's

Is there an advantage to doing this? Like, cheaper insurance or something? Or am I missing the point?

Under 5000 miles per year is exempt from emissions, thats how I get my rx7 to pass every year.

as far as titleing a car no, it just says that the odmeter has flipped. as for emissions yes inspections are cheaper, with that u only pay for the sticker not the emissions testing then just pay for ur inspection

Really? Any car 100K+ or 10 years older is emissions exempt?

That's freaking awesome.

no just odometer Exempt for titles and anything under 1975 need no emmissions

Ah I see, I looked into it.

Basically, any car 10 years or older you don't need to disclose how many miles are on the car. Nice huh?

Ender81

Yeah but it is a selling point to have the mileage history of the car. So having an odometer reading on the title is nice. I'm not worried about emissions because for one it is a 66 and two I live in a county that only does a visual.

if a car is mileage exempt the wouldn't it be emissions exempt as well? Since you wouldn't need to disclose the mileage... it would be fairly easy to get away with "I drove it less than 5k miles"

Ender81

Yeah but the point is I don't want it to be marked as exempt. I want my title to show the correct mileage. It's not about emissions because the car is too old anyway.

I understand this. I was just making a comment about the whole mileage exempt thing in relation to the emissions and how it doesn't matter then for a car 10+ years old or over 100k miles...

my 92 escort was milage exempt but i still had to have emissions testing done . but when i get the '52 inspected i wont need emissions even though im running a carbed 86 engine, but thats a diff subject & not too clear on how that works

Ender81

Spoke with the notary today and convinced them to put down the mileage so hopefully it goes through. An 86 motor in a 52 huh lol. I think the emissions requirements go with the car not parts in the car but I could be wrong lol.

Technically I guess you are right. Only problem is, is getting the mechanic doing the inspection/emissions test to comply.

they have to comply, theres no yes or no thing, they took the class and got the cert. so its either he does it or u take it to another shop that wont think twice about it

Hence it being a problem.

However, I guess it'd be completely legal to use two clusters. One to put > 5000 miles on, and the other to drive around on for the rest of the year. :-p

I <3 loopholes.

It only takes me 15 minutes to take a Cavalier dash apart, every other car in the world is 100x easier.

In PA if a car is driven less then 5k miles a year its exempt, from emissions no mechanic will argue that(i have an inspection license).

Swapping clusters is not finding a loophole its illegal.

To the OP I have a 74 MG titled in PA with the mileage, but it was titled a long time ago so it may have been under the the 25 year mark.
