View Full Version : Warped LUG NUT!!! Riding on 4 lugs! Safe?

So I was doing a little undercarriage maintainence, trying to establish whether something is negatively affecting my handling, or if i'm just losing my marbles.....

pulled off Front D/S wheel and realized one of the lugs was completely warped, would not thread back on. most likely due to a shop using power tools and overtorquing...

Anyway, I pulled a lug off the rear wheel, so now I have 5 ea. on the front wheels, but only 4 on the D/S rear. they are all snug as should be.

This should be safe to drive on for a day or two right? I'll obviously routinely check for any loosening. But i figure since its the rear wheel, it shouldn't experience as much stress as a front, and should be okay on 4 lugs to get to work and back, right? Please tell me yes!! haha.

btw, they are Gorilla tuner splined nuts, (i'll look up the spec) so if anyone has a spare or two, I'd gladly take them.

thanks in advance.

just avoid placing heavy loads on it (heavy braking, hard turns, etc).

Must be all that torque. In reality, on a 5 lug car, as few as 3 lugs are fine, but like everyone else said, the sooner you get it fixed the better.

remember if ever have only 3 lugs on one wheel for example, borrow from another one, I saw that **** on survivor or something lol

You should be fine. I drove on two lug nuts before when two of them were cross threaded and broke off. I wouldn't recommend driving hard.

Also, any autoparts store carries lug nuts, just go get one for the time being. For future reference, don't let anyone use impact wrenches on your wheels unless its a trusted shop.

I just keep replaying the vid of that FD rx7 losing all its wheels at the start of an auto-x comp!! :D

This thread reminded me of the day I helped a family change a flat at a local tire station. They had just gotten off the interstate, and I noticed they had a flat so I went over to help. Kid had 2 lugs per wheel on all 4 wheels on his Civic, mismatch, crossthreaded, you name it. I tightened everything up for them after changing the tire to make sure it was "safe" and told the kid who owned the car to get 4 lugs on all the tires ASAP.

I hope they made it home. :/

Autozone or whatever auto parts shop you can find should sell lug nuts, just make sure to get the right thread or you'll end up cross-threading ALL of the studs (i should know, I've done it before).

Also, if those studs HAVE been cross threaded, you may need to get a tap&die kit and re-thread them, which isn't very difficult, just time consuming when you have to do it 16-20 times.

I'v driven 10 miles with ONE lug nut on my left rear tire. When I bought my car...the idiot forgot to tighten up the lugs after changing the brakes. 3 of them got so loose that they broke the studs off. Somehow one held on. I though I had a flat tire....the ****ing wheel was wobling around  Had to replace the entire knuckle because of that idiot.

Now I have a 5 lug conversion. I think 2 could cut it now

If he has wheel studs than its easier to get a new stud and replace it rather than chasing it.
