Who wants to fix my bike?

Probably nobody, but figured I'd give it a shot.

I've got a 1980 Honda CB750-F that needs fixed... It's not running, cranks all day long. Not completely sure what the issue is, although I know it needs a new battery (thing's been sitting for over a year)... I don't think it has compression (I don't have a compression tester, so I couldn't say for sure), so it could possibly use the valves reseated.

I was going to send it to a shop and have the work done, but now that I'm out of a job I'm running out of money, I'd like to ride it a bit while it's still warm out, but it's looking less and less likely every day.

I really would do it myself except I don't know enough about ripping a bike engine apart and I'm positive I'll screw something up... also, I don't have the tools, and my garage is too small for me to have a bike in pieces in it for a year.

If anybody feels like tinkering with it and (hopefully) getting it running (or possibly working on it with me while teaching me WTF I'm doing), I'd gladly cut some vinyl or make a few t-shirts for you or something...

If you can get it to my place, I'll gladly take a look at it. Cant make any promises (course, I wouldnt be charging anything, lol), but ill do what I can. Im pretty good with bikes. Have you tinkered with the carbs at all?

I rebuilt the carbs myself once, then sent it out to a shop so they could get it running and they rebuilt them again... that was 2 years ago, I haven't even pulled them since it stopped running again. When I sent it to the shop, it had the same issues that it does now... the carb rebuild didn't really affect it at all, and I'm not even sure what they did to get it running... I wish I had remembered to ask.

anyway, it ran for about a month and a half after that before it died again... i noticed it going downhill when it stopped wanting to idle without me running the throttle until it warmed up... and then one morning it just wouldn't start.

Dublin wouldn't be too bad for me to get it to... my roommate has a pickup I could maybe talk him into carting it down with... I grew up in the Lehigh Valley, so I'm back in that area every once in a while anyway. Before I go hauling it that distance though, I'll save you (or whoever) and myself the trouble and put a new battery in it and check the gap on the plugs, since the guys on the forum I'm on for these bikes tells me that they have trouble running because of those 2 issues, but I'm fairly certain it's more complicated than that.

How long are you in Dublin for before going back to school?

yes sir, and it's not old enough to have a kick starter either...

Take some carb cleaner, and spray it into the barrels. If it fires up or catches, you have a fuel issue. This could either be gunked up fuel bowls or plugged jets. Also, check for spark.

you should take a spark plug out and hold it against the motor where u can see it while you crank it over ...see if it sparks

yeah done both those things, has spark, starter fluid does nothing. i do general maintenance on all my vehicles and i can diagnose simple stuff, so i've checked the basics...

Like I said, I cant make any promises, but I'd be glad to take a look. Ill probably start with a compression test. Whats the mileage on this puppy? Sounds like its not making compression, assuming its recieving fuel. I had a 1974 Kawasaki that would turn over forever but wouldnt fire. I threw a new ring on the piston, viola. Started right up.

try a few drops of oil in the cylinders. That should help with compression and if it starts you know it's rings.

Try and use starting fluid, sometimes if you get it going it can suck the gunk out of the carbs and you'll be ok..That what I did with a 70 something cb550 before I ghost rode it off of a cliff into a gasoline explosion!

I'm working on getting it back to my house (it's currently in my uncle's garage). I forget exactly what the mileage is on it, I probably should know... it's not bad for a bike of its age though. Once it's back, I'm going to check a couple things and see if I can figure it out... a carb rebuild wouldn't be out of the question...
