IMHO the subtle changes start to differentiate the 997 from the 996 even more..even give it a bit of the bubbleyness that emanates from the 993 (my favorite Porsche design, ever).

Here are the changes, and that gearbox is already proving to be fairly quick around the Ring..

Porsche has continued its tradition of only implementing minimal changes to the styling of its iconic 911 range for the latest 2009 model year facelift, but the changes taking place under the new sheet metal are quite the opposite. This is because the new 911 Carrera is available for the first time with direct injection and dual clutch technologies.

The first cars to receive the updates are the Carrera and Carrera S models, both of which are now available with Porsche’s newly developed Doppel Kupplung (dual clutch) gearbox complete with seven forward gears.

Porsche has already applied direct injection technology to the 4.8L V8 Cayenne SUV but implementing the technology in the flat-six of the Carrera models has been a more daunting task - although the payoff of greater power, torque, fuel-efficiency and emissions ratings was an enticing incentive for Porsche.

Engineers have increased the size of the combustion chambers, upgraded the crankshaft and installed new oil and water pumps in order to implement the direct injection technology, raising the redline to 7,500 rpm, 200rpm higher than the non-direct-injection flat-six.

The 3.8L flat-six gets a significant improvement in horsepower thanks to the technology, with power rising from 350hp to 380hp and torque climbing from 295lb-ft at 4,600rpm to 310lb-ft at 4,400 rpm. According to Porsche, the updated Carrera S with direct injection and the new seven-speed dual clutch transmission should hit the 60mph mark in 4.3 seconds, an improvement of around four-tenths of a second over the current model.

While more horsepower is always welcome, consumers these days want to see fuel efficiency improve and Porsche doesn’t disappoint in this area either. The 3.8L 911 Carrera S with dual-clutch transmission consumes up to 12.8% less fuel and emits around 14.5% less carbon-dioxide than its predecessor, while the 3.6L 911 Carrera experiences similar gains. The combination of greater efficiency due to direct injection and minimal loss of power thanks to the dual clutch transmission allow the two sports cars to achieve these significant gains.

A new butterfly valve has also been adopted in the 3.8L, opening at around 5,100rpm to really allow the Porsche’s bark to match its bite, although the 3.6L in the base Carrera doesn’t get this treatment.

Changes to the 911’s exterior consist of new LED taillights, slightly revised bumpers with daytime running lights and new 18 and 19in wheels. The rest of the 911 fleet, including the Carrera 4S and Turbo, are expected to adopt the same changes in the coming year.

4.3 0-60? I want to see it. That is one hell of a jump over the last.

The subtle touches that were made to the body look good. They are really squeezing every last inch of power out of that flat 6. Porsche has said that the absolute biggest motor they will put in the 911 is 4 liters. Still out of my price range by a long shot..

I care...I thought about the Carrera S as an alternative to the SLK. Sounds pretty badass, I'll have to go check them out sometime soon. I'm sure the 7-speed is much quicker that my 7-speed.

lol Bill...I care, b/c AFAIC, Porsche makes one of the best daily drivable sports cars out there, probably the best. They are unparalleled in many areas, and they are benchmark in others.

RIP 3rd pedal...

Cool car, but you won't see me driving it.

I'd still get one with 3 pedals, but the DK and the DCT are awesome.

The GT2 is proper..why? RWD, 6 speeds, 3 pedals.

There ya go.

Still, the Porsche styling in general doesn't tickle me pink to say the least. I've never been much of a fan for round headlights.

truer words never spoken...

ive been to certain race events and while most other comps spend months building a tube frame chassis porsche throwns on some sticky tires and a cat less exhaust and call it a day....

they build some serious cars

for me, my fav porsche is the GT3 RS.

if it had a race mode twin clutch setup it would de-throne the f430 scuderia thats top of my list for fav of all time

Frank- Few appreciate how developed the Porsche 911 is. It has to be- the layout and the physics of such are simply against it. They are the most profitable manufacturer out there, and all of that goes a long way in helping keep the 911 fresh and absolutely vital in the auto industry. It's one of the only sports cars that is fairly reliable, offers a fair amount of "real world" practicality, yet allows the driver/owner to take it to a legitimate track and really put some damage in. Not to mention they truly believe in the spirit of driving, and that's evidenced in the emphasis on driver feedback in their chassis and by not overpowering the cars via technology (although the 959 argues highly against this lol) or high hp. They've found the formula that they like and they keep it that way, yet they always improve, always evolve. Add that to the aforementioned profitability, and you have pure genius IMHO.

My dream Porsche...well...there's quite a few..but I'd have to say either a 993 Turbo, or the current GT2. While the 993 has AWD, it was a force to be reckoned with, and who could argue with the sound of that air-cooled TT flat 6? I sure as hell know I couldn't...for "non Porsche" Porsche, it's the CTR Yellow Bird, without a doubt.

While their head test driver favors the clutch pedal- offering the DKT allows for Porsche to fill the current technological gap while maintaining their status quo.
