So I am set on getting the VF34 package from Gruppe-s with a Helix topmount, then I though about well how many miles on your engine is to many before you start to do some heavy modding. I have about 39 grand which is all back road driving.. pretty much to and from work with about 3 trips to staten island. I beat my car once in a while, have been taking it very easy since I toasted my first clutch raw at 35,000 and heard horror stories about our transmission... How many miles/years would you start to think twice about wanting to throw in a bigger snail with much added power? I come to the conclusion I do not have a beater car and I rely on this beast to get me to and from work, which is the USAF and they dont usually let you stay home with a "broke vehicle" phone call... unlike some civilian jobs..
Im dying to do it but yet on the other hand happy with stage 2.. Should I invest in some bling or just say screw it vf34 here i come?

i always err on the side of caution, (sometimes too much) but i say if you're happy with stage 2, ride that out till the ol'butt dyno tells you you need more... and maybe by that time you'll have a beater to get you around in case something should go wrong... my .02

I have 85,000 miles on my car and I am still modding. Do it.

04+ trannies are supposed to be stronger than the 02-03 trannies. Both Fred and Karl are running VF34's on their cars, without incident so far. Karl is not nice to his car either!

Do you have a beater/alternate transportation?

If answer is no, then that is your answer to new turbo. If you can't afford to have your car down for 2 months or to buy a new shortblock/tranny, I would stay away from it.

i have a 2004 R-6, but they tend not to handle well in snow =)

But stock 02 WRX's tend to dyno about 10hp more than stock '03s to '05s.

I would go for it and get a sensible/safe tune.

how do you like that setup with the fmic? everyone says its overkill for a vf-34. is the lag very bad? any comments?

sorry for the thread hijack

VF34

run it on the cobb basemap with a big smile, and then down the road look to get a protune and see some even more substantial improvements.

this 'friend' of mine is planning to do that.

to answer your question directly.... the more you mod your car the more will go wrong with it. however if you are smart and do your homework then i see no reason for your block to reach 100k miles. thats a good ways off and when the time comes for me i'm sure it'll be able time to go to a 2.5 block anyways.

I have a VF30 on my 02 with no problems to the engine. The turbo on the otherhand is another story. God I need a tune.

-Ivan

PS: VF30 is same as a VF34 but the Vf34 is Ball-Bearing.

You guys can talk to subwrxkid too. He runs the VF34 / TXS FMIC setup, but he is running Ecutek.

Deadbolt Enterprises used to offer the VFs with a bunch of upgrades (P&P, ceramic coat, etc..) but they are saying they are in short supply and are only offering them on a limited basis. I think you can still get a 34, ship it to them and have it modified though...

And 03's get a revised trans. 02's get weak gears.

yup 03's get the revised trans...my trans is running super strong with the vf34 and fmic setup...I used to run utec..decided to sell it for something safer...got a safer tune on ecutek by rallispec...i absolutley hate it..it sucks bad..anyways I vote utec for now...atleast until next month when i throw the new turbo and injectors on and got to conecticut to get tuned...anyways go for the vf34..it makes good power..id say send it to deadbolt to since the vf34 wont really give you that much umf...but all in all good turbo and good with fmic..the additional lag overwelms the heatsoak in the topmount...so i say fmic..since when you race when are you below 4k rpms...im spent!! lol

what do you hate about the ecutek? i'd be interested to hear- if too ot please pm me... (i had always heard good things and i was considering it a potential step up from the utec and would be interested to hear your experience)

sorry for the misunderstanding...I like the ecutek...I dont like the tune I got from Rallispec...in reference to that I put down more power on the utec..but its not as safe as ecutek...also my tune on the utec was 450$ versus 100$ retunes on the ecutek...ecutek is much cheaper...anyways Im still putting down good power...runing mid 12's...and still safe!!

id say send it to deadbolt to since the vf34 wont really give you that much umf...but all in all good turbo and good with fmic..the additional lag overwelms the heatsoak in the topmount
Does Deadbolt still offer upgrades on VF turbos?

What about Xotic Motorsports? I hear they are decent with the ecutek.

PM me if it gets too OT or I'll talk to you if you are coming out on Fri., but keep you PM box clear

yea Im pretty sure deadbolt does...clipped vf34's and what not..check the website...but the vf34 is good for 12's if you want more go with a different turbo..as far as the ecutek tune..ive heard xx tuning in ct...they are awesome...these are the guys who sponsored the evo wrx shootout at englishtown this year...sick subies!! crazy power and just all around awesome guys
