no cat no muffler and it passes inspection(with muffler)

2point4DSM

Stock 1g DSMs came with just one cat. Even with out a cat DSMs pass emissions at idle if they are tuned and maintained, most of the time. I got one on there to help with noise since I'm paranoid about pissing off neighbors and since I don't have anymore room for another muffler I figured this would be the next best thing.

Like Dave mentions, it eats power. The car dies off at the top. But the setup is good enough now that I'm more than happy with how fast it is and don't need to worry about trying to get more power out of it by removing a cat.

can i have more than one option?

i have a dp with removable cat. so sometimes i have one cat, sometimes i have none. depends on what i feel like. right now i have no cat because i broke one of the bolts for the cat last time i removed it, so i can't put it back in.

Sid

Hopefully only one after Friday. If the weather plays nice and the wife hits the bricks early enough, I'll throw my header in before work. Gonna keep the one to TRY to be considerate toward the neighbors since I don't get off work 'til midnight.

so is this just an interchangeable race pipe? (similar to my catpipe, which i can replace with my racepipe) or something different? how does this work?

yes, that's exactly what it is. i have a magnaflow high-flow cat and a race pipe. i can swap them in about 15 minutes depending on what i need. i've been leaving in the race pipe because of the bolts, but also because it's race season and i use leaded gas (C16).

any cars newer than 95 don't need cats to pass inspection as long as you're not throwing a code. just a bit of info for those who think catless is un-inspectable.

....even a visual inspection?

I make myself exempt from emissions  but either way I have my "rig" just in case a cop wants to feel smart and check.

No, not having a cat is a sure fire way to fail inspection, they just either don't notice or don't care, but you can fail.

0 cats here. and i just checked my emissions book the other day and 96 and newer obd2 cars do not require a visual inspection to pass emissions.

Ha! Just one. Not outta the woods yet, however. O2 bung was welded in a place that puts everything (non-foulers and/or sensor) in the way of the oil pan. So for now I have a brass plug in the bung and my O2 sensor zip-tied to the radiator support. Still waiting to throw a CEL. Also, not as loud as I had anticipated. How much more "noise" will a hi-flow cause?

exactly. like i said, as long as you don't throw a code there is no "visual inspection of the cat" so u pass, as long as you are 96 or newer. Matt(sincere) just got his catless car inspected and passed. In the "catalytic converter" section of the report it says N/A.

Orbit
10-02-2005, 03:15 PM
it depends where you go. around here they look under your car with mirrors even if you don't have a cel.

If you are in NJ, there is a visual inspection. I failed for visual, and needed to swap in my catted DP to pass. As long as your CEL is simulated and not just shut off, you will pass the plug in OBD2 portion.

not if you reset the ecu/clear the code...

That's what I thought. I've just heard/read how some ECU's save stuff like that to memory, basically so the dealer can prove that you didn't ventilate your block driving through a school zone at stock boost. lol

you cant just clear the cel light then get inspected.you have to drive the car for awhile (don't know the milage). if you just reset the ecu the station can tell and will tell you to come back.

if someone knows a freindly place for inspecton. please pm me.

Yeah, that's basically what I meant. Just worded it improperly, I suppose. My inspection isn't up until July, so I should be cool. IF it decides to throw a cel before Friday. Roughly 150 miles and nothing yet...........
