hen you take an engine/harness out of a 2002 ODBII car like mine, does the engine put in have to be an 2002 OBII or newer to be kept legal. Or can I just use an OBDII engine/harness from any year that uses OBDII.

Also if you use a Standalone EMS do you loose the ability to use OBDII. Like plugging in the code reader to see if there are any codes? Effectively loosing its legality

Basically the reason I'm asking is cause I'm trying to get my KL project underway. And if I can use any Manual V6 car from 97-up (mx6/626/probe) to use a donor car I will. If not I'll have to find a 02 manual 626. which is rare and will be expensive.

i assume that as long as the obd2 car is kept obd2 it is fine.

The law technically states the same engine or newer. So, in your case, to be legal, the motor you are swapping in must be at least of MY2002 or higher. How are they going to know its an older OBDII motor? They probably won't.

Thats what I'm hoping, because then I have alot more options for donor cars

Something Else I found

http://www.dmv.org/pa-pennsylvania/custom-built-cars.php#Registration_and_Titling_Requirements_for _a_Street_Rod

So what I'm readin from this page is that I would simply have to register my car as a modified car. Am I missing the "fine print". It doesn't seem all that difficult to do.

that link makes it look real easy..in actuality it took 2 years t finally get one registered in that manor. and as far as obd2 goes no cel light = no emission sticker easy. but that recon/specalty veh title is difficult at the least(dont forget before and after pics.

Point of ref...I did a J-Spec KLZE swap on my old '96 626 (KL03 160HP 2.5LV6) that was OBDII and got a 95 KLZE 200hp 2.5LV6 donor motor. Luckily I lived in Monroe County, PA where emissions were not (and still are not) a requirement, since the KLZE doesn't use the EGR system I bypassed that junk. Although the 40hp boost over stock was great, it did eventually tear apart that crappy ford trans that they came with. lesson learned lol. Did pass inspection 2 years in a row.

I just need to move out into the middle of nowhere.

To the best of my knowledge, you HAVE to run OBDII. It must be intact and functional, there is a certain number of monitors you can have not working, provided they are not the outlined ones to pass inspection(such as a functional O2 sensor).
