i borrowed my neighbor's C6 Z06 on friday. He gave it to me for the drive because soon, I will be buying one and I wanted to see how they are driving all day, power, handling ect ect. I got it around 9am. went home and picked up the g/f. got on RT30. was driving down that for maybe 2-3 miles. was cruising at 70.. then all the sudden we hear this weird banging noise and before I knew it.. I see this huge peice of metal FLYING in the air behind me. I quickly pull over and look at the car and find the skin of the roof is GONE!!!!!!!!! I started freaking out bigtime. I ran 1/2 mile back and picked up the metal, put it in the trunk and babied it off the highway. pulled into a parking lot and checked the car for damage. somehow. no-body ran over the peice and it didnt hit anyone or anything. It landed way in the grass off the road and there was no damage to the car THANK GOD!!! I called my neighbor and explained everything (expected him to start freaking out but thank god he was cool) and he had me take it directly the the GM dealership by us. He called ahead of me getting there and talked the service manager what happened. Then he called me back and told me that it was not my fault and there is a recall on the glue. what a feakin day!!! I couldn't believe all what happened. thank the lord that nobody got injured/killed from the flying metal in the air.

Thats messed up...
Shouldnt they have contacted your neighbor, or any other z06 owner about the roof glue?
kevin@dambrosio
06-14-2008, 05:51 PM
when i got to the dealership.. they said that that recall was performed on it and it was the first Z06 ever to actually have this happen.... so I doubt they actualy did the recall and got paid for doing nothing.

they glue the roof on...
omgjacki
06-14-2008, 08:37 PM
Yeah, for real... glue, though? A letter, e-mail, phone call, something should have been made to inform all Z06 owners of a recall. Luckily no one was injured, but if anything had happened with public recall like that, Chevrolet would be having some problems.

Actually, there are alot of cars today that are held together with glue, and not spot welds.
Its kind of amazing, when you put 5 spot welds on a 5"LX1"w seam, and do the same exact seam with glue, the spot welds will rip apart at a lower pressure than the glue joint, which will tear the metal before the glue breaks.
Only problem is that just about any adhesive deteriorates with age, so i wonder how well it will fare in 40 years.

Enigma is right, some cars(audi) even have their quarter panels glued on now. Also, with the z06 being a mostly fiberglass body, what is the material surrounding the roof(a/b/c pillar skin) made of?

they glue the roof on...
Lol, well I'm sure it wasn't Elmers glue.

They should've used Guerilla Glue. That stuff will hold ANYTHING.

haha, GM loves losing their tops. 4th gen f bodies have problems with the t-tops flying off
well, idk if its really GM's fault or just clumsy owners, but it happens kinda often. even happened to my friend. i think he didnt close it right though. it flew off on the freeway and he had to get a new set lol

Roof glue HAS to be on the Top 5 for car recalls, has to be... Well least no one got hit by it that would of complicated things

Maybe he should have had the recall done! We had the recall done under a year ago and we are STILL getting recall information in the mail
alot of Z06 owners are ignoring it because there are alot of private publications (corvette fever, vette magazine, etc..) that are saying it only happenes in southern and south western regions of the united states where the sun is very strong. If the car sits out in the sun, the adhesive weakens. Obviously this isnt true.

?? did you not read what I posted.. GM said the recall WAS performed on the car already. this whole experience makes me want to get a 2007 instead just incase.

As far as I remember with Recalls if it's a Safety Recall it HAS to be fixed no matter how many times it happens...When Mitsu had the 2g Ball Joint Recall they would have to had fixed it on the car no matter how many times it Happened (Hopefully the first fix was enough but hey ya never know)
Did they not fix the roof when you took it to them?? And wouldn't the owner remember his roof flying off?? Seems kind of shady to me.

Eh, While I agree it's not like he Knew it was going to happen...Plus if the Guy can Afford a Zoey I'm pretty sure he can have it fixed fairly quickly.
Props for him not freaking out though.

the car has 7,000 miles on it. the owner said it was never done while he owned it (he bought it brand new) but maybe GM did it while it was still at the dealership. who knows. They just took the car and put in the the garage when I got to the dealership. Said it should be about a week for it to get fixed. the car has a intake/tune/exhaust and put down 480 and change. its been WELL over 70mph and nothing happened, it was just its time I guess lol.

ot,,Did you have a chance to drive the car at all? Impressions?
kevin@dambrosio
06-16-2008, 08:54 AM
i had it for about an hour. its way different then mine. way more instant power. with mine. im used to the tq and hp it has and I can def feel the bottle kick in and that wakes it up a whole lot. with this car. everything.. i mean everything is better (minus the roof haha) the way it handles is amazing. It pulls in 5th gear like mine pulls in 3rd gear. Im iffy on the HUD. it seams that mine is a lot cleaner then the C6's but maybe it will just take some getting used too. interior is typical cheap gm but it is a lot nicer then my mine. I love the Nav, heated seats, TWO CUPHOLDERS!! braking is awsome and better at higher speeds then mine. they moved to massive drilled brakes front and rear. driving it for that little bit of time def made my mind up. For the money I will get one for sure. I may wait a month of two and let the market settle (the ZR1's going to make the Z's come down slightly I think)

Not really...stupid people just don't latch their t-tops then take off driving. Hell you can even lock them into position with a key.

You realize Lotus glues most of the Elise togther. A lot of higher end cars are doing it. Airplanes have been doing it for years. I actually heard about this happening to a couple people on another board. Thats what happens when you buy a car in the first year of production. Thanks god no one was hurt.

Funny my 350z was at the dealer over 6 times the first 2 months I owned it. They wouldn't even cover the known faulty window actuators cuase I had aftermarket speakers (lol). Every car company puts something into production that has problems.....just look at the new Toyota trucks. Hell they have been bullit proof till recently. Now I wouldn't touch one. This does prove thought that the first year for a model is usually the worst.
Ps Clean...Im not part of the "ford mustang" brigade

Glue now day is amazing. Where I work we have reps from Henkel Chemical here all day. These guys mainly do welding and chemicals, but Henkel owns Loctite. They have glues being used in the industry to replace welding. I was told that a bus company glues there bus together now instaed of welding becasue it is a stronger hold and less distortion of the materials.
My Buell had a wheel bearing issues, which I though required the wheel bearing to be replaced. I replaced them and the noise went away for a day. Next day it was back. Come to find out the hole for the bearing in the wheel was egg shaped, so I figured now I have to get a new wheel...NOT SO FAST. Loctite makes a product for pressing bearings in. It makes a slip fit as stong as the press fit. I spoke with the reps here and they said it would work great on my application, but the only thing is once it cures, I will never get the bearing out. I used it, $20.00 for a tiny bottle, but 1K miles later and still no issues.

What does a latch and glue have in common?
Absolutely nothing.
Relavance? None.
Thanks for playing.

Roof 'failure' due to operator error and failure due to manufacturing are two different things.
