View Full Version : Smart Cars are Stupid (Rant)

I dont see the point. They get a combined mpg of 36. A Civic does about 30-35 depending on how you drive. In a Smart Car you seat two people and you have a p.o.s that I could kick off the road. In a Civic you at least have a backseat and you won't die when someone bumps into you on their bicycle. They are not even cute as some would say. They look like a VDub Beetle, Scion xA and xB, and a PT Cruiser all had a massive orgy and the result is the Smart Car. The father will be announced on Maury next Tuesday.

the 'Busa powered smart is awesome, but thats it. I hate those cars. I can fit one in the back of my wagon if I tried to.
And they are friggin EXPENSIVE for what they are. Just get a civic, or even a civic hybrid.

They are expensive in the states, you can get one here in Germany new for 8,000 Euro. At that price they are a god send to these people and they actually are spacious inside. I hate the concept but they get the job done for next to nothing on price.
At todays exchange rate that is $12,700 for the base model

But there's only 1 of those, and plenty of smarts with bike motors in em. Look up Hayabusa Smart.

I know of the Smart cars with hayabusa motors. Which are sick and all, but for the practicality of the stock Smart Car they're pretty useless here. 36mpg is bull**** for what you're driving.
redline, they may be useful there in Germany because there are a lot more small cars...but here you'll be rundown by a 7 year old girl on a tricycle.

The only reason youd die in one is if you got run over by someone in giant SUV, and in since in america bigger=better, smart cars wont work here, at least not until SUVs start to disappear.

Give it another 5 years and I bet most of us are driving something very similar to work on a daily basis. It just doesn't make much sense to drive the size of vehicles we do for transporting 1 person. It is pretty nice to be able to back into sidewalk parking space, but I agree that they are overpriced here. Wait until the Japs start bringing their metro cars here for this to take off.
I also don't like the "arms race" mentality that most Americans have with big vehicles and their "bigger = safer" logic. They are only safer for the people inside of them, but more dangerous for everyone else on the road.

I disagree. Smart cars will work if gas keeps rising. Nobody's going to buy a V8 if gas is 5 bucks a gallon.

At 8K Euro for a brand new car, O'l Redline might be driving one back and forth to work here shortly. Plus if I want to take a trip get in it and go, the Evo is cool and all but damn gas is killing me if I want to travel around Europe. You'll be laughing if I buy one! I was going for a R32 or R33 and the money I saved for one might be going into a smart car.

I like em(rare for a new car). Not a new concepts though. Harkens back to the days of the BMW Isetta and the Messerschmitts. It'll do better in the American market than those did(in relation), but not as good as one would think.

I beg to differ 93 they are sold out like everywhere and they will continue to...just look at the 100% markup compared to Europe. Yeah shipping costs but thats what $1000-$1500 it cost the Govt to ship mine here.

Dont get me wrong, in Europe, it is extremely smart, since they have very limited road space to manuever, park, etc. My wagon would almost seem giant amongst a lot of cars there.
But here in the US, in most of the suburban areas, there is not too much of a need for something that small on the outside.
As for the people riding around in their Escaldes, Excursions, Suburbans, and crap like that, ALONE, ALL THE TIME, someone please off them. There is no need for a vechile of that size, to carry around 1 person. Hell, my wagon is too big for me most of the time, and its 1/4 of the size of these things.

To be honest, I would feel safer on a bike and feel that I got my money's worth.

If they were cheap and I lived in the city, I think they would be a practical idea!
But the price doesn't make sense.
Just like the Mini Cooper and the Prius when they first came out, every yuppie wanted one as a status symbol and they drove up the friggin price.
There really isn't much of a difference between those that own Hummers and those that own "eco-friendly" cars. Its just boils down to ego. One just happens to be a little better for the environment.

If I didn't have kids I might buy one- I like them, the concept, the fact that americans hate them; but will be priced in to them in the next 5-10 years. I guess we could get on board with the $2500 TaTa??!? Thats trustworthy-

I think the OP's point is not about people driving SUVs, but why do people buy smart cars when for the same price, fuel economy, etc you can get a corolla or a civic. It just doesn't make sense.

^Size. And here's an idea- some people might actually buy a car because they like the particular car!!!!!! If (perception of)sense was the only factor in automotive purchases, all the fascinating cars of yore like Citroen SM's, Alfa Spyders, Mazda rotary pickups, desoto's, Sterlings(oh wait- they already are:-p), etc would be rotting away in junkyards. Tis the æon of Horus, good sir, reason is crushed and rendered effete by the hawk headed god(and by Soviet Russia, of course, for it crushes everything in its wake).

The Epa ratings are somewhat underrated mileage wise. I know someone who has one and he usually averages upwards of 40. From what i've heard from the Smart board, some owners average mid to upper 40's mpg wise on the highway..
