Hey guys im pretty new here
I have a Supra But for my DD
i have a 1989 Honda Civic DX
The stock d15b2 Motor I put a B7 Head on it from a newer civic
The reason i put the new head on was because i had 2 burnt valves and it was running crappy
i took the head off changed the valves and lapped them in and put the head back on
we put the timing on like a few teeth off and it musta bent the valves
so i checked with dial indicator and they were so i went out and bought a head from the local pick and pull
slapped it on there and set timing right and starts but pops out the intake like a valve is stuck
it did this before on the old head also after i put the timing to where it was supposed to be
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas?
tonite i took the intake mani off the head and when i unbolted it a ton of gas was in the runners and came out
Idk if this has anything to do with this
the intake mani did have a double gasket by mistake and i dont know if that could be causing the problems
maybe its the PGM-FI or the distributor?
idk
i need my daily back because the supra is down
Thank You guys,Justin

are you absolutely, 100% positive timing is correct Did you crank the engine over by hand a few times. You should never, ever, start a motor after setting a timing belt until cranking it over by hand a few times to make absolute sure the timing is perfect.

Weve checked it about 3 times on each head
Havent hand cranked it but it has been right each time
How would i go about hand cranking to check the timing?
never done it
Do you think it would be anything else
the car has almost no power i cant drive it and it smokes alot
but the smoke is from the rings being bad but i have to live with that
but maybe the fuel in the manifold means the spark isnt firing at the right time??
is the distributor bad?
does it have a dizzy? check ignition timing.

Ive always wondered this
What exactly is a dizzy
ive search a few forums but never anything explaining what it is but ive heard this might be the problem
Is it the distributor i know it has something to do with the distributor right?
yea im going to say ignition timing if your positive the cams are timed right.

The reasons im in this problem
double gaskets and Timing problems
is because of friends who thought they knew cars that didnt take the time to do things right the first time
like i usually do but now that i have the time im going to do this by myself so i took care of the gasket problem
and i made shure the timing was right
the cam timing is right
How can i check the ignition timing any other way without a timing light or should i get one?
And
Thank you but ive been around cars about half of my 19 year old life
But thank you for the advice i think ive got this
(not trying to be a smart a$$)
sorry
But anyone tell me what a dizzy is ??
ya dizzy is distributor. check firing order at the dizzy. buy a timing light at autozone or harbor freight. sounds like timing is off 180*

Yea i was thinking about the timing being off 180 degrees
because the distributr can be put in both ways so im gunna try and turn the distributor 180 and see what that yeilds me wat els to try?
i might go buy a light later tonite

Ok so i did the 180 turn on the distributor
Ran alot better
But it still pops when trying to rev from a low rpm
Do you think the cam timing may be off 1-2 teeth as its when i hit the gas it idled ok
i hope i didnt ruin anythingg
Dude if you are not sure about the cam timing don't start it. Verify the cam timing before turning the key again!

Well weve checked it 3 times to TDC and everything prolly more and it has been right so idk what else it could be
Ill check it again before i do anything
Thanks for telling me the 180 degree off thing i thought of it but noone else went along with me saying that so yeah
na is best!

It Basically is backfireing out the exhaust when i accelerate from a low rpm
im not driving it but when free revving it
idk what the problem is
its killing me
i need a car
just like pop pop pop when on the gas then sometimes goes back to idle and sometimes sputters out
and when its colder it seems to run a little better then when its warmed up idk why

I can just about guarantee its a timing problem. Are you sure you have cam timing correct? Also, next time for teh distributor, whichever way it goes in easy is correct. The little notch on it is ofset from center as is the slot in the cam, so its can only go in easily one way. Does it have and serious air leaks(asking because you mentioned the IM being taken off)
na is best!

replace car and rotor first, routine maintence so wont hurt or be wasting money... see if that helps. pretty much as long as you line up the marks on the cam and crank and tighten the exhaust side properly you car is going to be on timing, no matter how off your distributor timing is off wont cause it to miss that badly to be THAT noticable... had a similar problem with a ls motor turned out to be a bad coil, but ur problem is most likely in the distributor, replace cap and rotor and see from there, if still problem get urself a test light and check coil and ignition module... the popin sound only happens in low rpm right... kinda like a 2 step... but you can continue to rev past it and then it is fine past then right???
