View Full Version : Help me decide on wheels

Well since Tirerack decided to take my money then tell me NT03m's are on a 3 month BO, I am hunting for different wheels. I have narrowed it down to these 2 in 18X9 +29 (advan) and 18X9.5 +29 (SSR) both in gunmetal. Prices have been quoted and I am ready to jump. TST, I want to see what you think, which one?
EDIT: KEEP IN MIND THAT +29 OFFSET WILL BE MORE CONCAVE ON BOTH WHEELS PICTURED.
Advan RS w/ RT 615's = $2900 shipped

I prefer the SSRs honestly... but one thing i'd look into is the quality of their finish. I've known a couple people who have had issues with the clear coat flaking off over time which is pretty beat for an expensive name brand wheel. They are also semi-forged which makes them light but not quite as strong as a true forge and they are more prone to bending, which is somewhat common for them. Just want you to have all the info...
With that said, the RS's never did it for me. I know many will disagree, but they just dont have any 'personality' in my eyes... there's nothing that pops for me with them.
I think what you really want is a set of CCW Classics... I saw a set on an Evo down in Florida and damn it looked tough. I might have to get a set myself for the Supra :).

Troll thanks for the info, I have never heard about it before. I am still working out some offset issues and the SSR's are going to be aggressive(to say the least) at a +22. In the front I am going to be exactly where I want but the rear is where I am concerend? Who knows I am not trying to rush it, I am making alot of phone calls today and tomorrow trying to get this figured out. The link below is exactly the size and finish I am looking at.

Got a question.....How much are the rims with out tires? I am going to assume at Least $2,000 of the price is just for the rims. For that amount of money you are close to the price range of multi peice forged wheels. These companys will custom make it to what ever offset you need. You can repair/replace the ring if you bend one. You can pretty much get any color you want. Bolts or no bolts.....+ you can possibly be the only person in the country with a set of what ever rims you choose on an evo. Just a thought.

Good idea if I was in the States, there is just too much lead time. I need a set mounted and ballanced then shipped for a decent price and their are only so many big companies that are willing to compete in that market. Custom wheel manufactures aren't in that group. My heart is really set on the SSR's but if I can't get a straight awnser on the offset issue I will be going with the Advan RS in silver.
SSR comes out of turn 4 hard, Advans right on its ass.

I know after looking around for pics of them installed on GG evos their is a thread like 20 pages long with them.
I have decided I want the SSR but I still have an offset issue to deal with, the available offsets are +22, +29(ideal and sold out everywhere), +33, +41. The later 2 just don't do it for me and I haven't received word on the +22's yet. I just don't want them sticking out like a set of Dayton's! If I have to step it down to a 18X9 that will be what I have to do but the 18X9.5 are only $463 a peice and the others are way more???
TROLL
05-28-2008, 12:34 PM
a +33 is only 4mm higher than your ideal, it wont be too noticeable and if it is throw a small spacer on there.
i'd guess the +22 will be pushing the limits, but i really dont know eveo fitment. some would say it looks amazing, but its just not for others as far as rolling fenders, negative camber, stiff suspension, etc. in order to pull it off.
orrr be patient and wait for the offset you really want.

As a last resort I will but I will have to settle for Silver for the bargain basement price I am getting them at, then powdercoat them later on. Gunmetal sold out while I was looking. But for the price with tires It's like I am almost raping them for the Advans. They are just everywhere now and people that bought them a year ago are trying to sell them for what they cost new now. If I have to I will get them but the SSR's are the **** in every catagory and if they peel I will them coated.

I think your right but the old comps are different from the Type-C and are a far reach from touching the Type C-RS, forged and a 2-peice wheel. I still love the Comps though, I wanted them on my Z when I had it. Just didn't have the cash back then to do it.

you should get 18x9.5 +22 Volk te37s.
That's a real rim, real aggressive, fits the fenders flusher than ever, and has the craziest concave. Do it.
but no bull****, if you need help finding a rim that will be aggressive, I can help you. Both of those wheels you chose will work, I just think you should step it up to 18x10 +25 in the advans.

Now that will look like Dayton's in the rear! I don't want to pull the rears. I will however trim them before I roll them, after reading alot of threads every evo with an aggressive setup and rolled fenders get the rear fender crease from the inner welds, looks like I will be triming a little at a time with a dremmel then spraying the inners.

Yes without coils I can go -2 in the front and just as close in the rear which I will do automatically with these wheels. I will try the stock settings first which is pretty aggressive for a stock setup, IDK of the top of my head but it wore out my stock Advans in 9K miles.

yeah but make sure they clear the brakes, thats the biggest thing!
The offset is fine, and that car was running a 245, not a 255 but the section width is only about .5" dif anyways.
and with the lower offset, if his fit, then yours would have less of a chance to have a problem since you're FURTHER away from the strut, but closer to the fender. He would have inside clearance issues before you ever would.

Do yourself a favor and get advan model 6 in 18x9 silver and use non-ricer (aka subaru I can fit dat) alignment and suspension setup for the actual roads you drive on ( not the ring ) and a good set of properly fitting tires, again not (aka stretch me for the wheels I bought because hot import nights)..Proper tires that fit are what does it for performance..

^He's going with 18x9.5 and a 255/35, that's the best option for him and that's NOT A STRETCH. Section width matches the bead to bead width and tread width matches rim width. No stretch.
He could even go 265/35 if he wanted to push it.
with a little 9" wheel like you reccommended, he could only run a 245 or something because the tire would buldge like crazy with anything bigger this making it harder for him to fit.

255/35 is the most widely used tire on 9.5in wheel, next would be 265/35. I am going to have look around and find out the exact width, the less I can run and still look flush is going to be what I run due to rear fender clearances. Speed Element says I should be good with the +22's and they will clear the brembros, I just have to worry about rear clearance, so triming will be happening.

+22 9.5 is gonna be tight in the back, and yes the tire choice is fine for rim width. It depends hugely with what tire he chooses as different models have different specs for the same size..will the car handle better in real world conditions then a forged 18x9 wheel with advan neovas without ricer camber or cutting, pulling, or rolling fenders? I really don't think so but thats just my opinion..I just think if you wanna run agressive shoes you have to accomidate the fenders as well, and I'm not talking pulling them either:)..^He's going with 18x9.5 and a 255/35, that's the best option for him and that's NOT A STRETCH. Tirerack the whole get up, $3100 with expedited air shipping. They were $265 a peice.
Now on to lugs and if need be ARP extended studs. I have to look around an see if I need the studs. I have been looking at the Project Mu lugs or Rays? Something dark or Ti colored.
