View Full Version : How come...
Well first I am not sure if this belongs here, so please move it if it doesn't.
How come every car for sale ad I see (Honda's, Rx-7's. DSM's, Subies, Etc) when they have a "fresh rebuild" they have less then 5,000 miles on them, sometimes even less. People are dumping money into the engines (if done correctly, ussually more then the asking price) and then after a couple thousand miles they turn around and sell the car.
What gives, are people disappointed in their build, not satisfied or are these people simply lying about the motors history? Someone shed some light, maybe people who have sold cars with "fresh rebuilds" or purchased them. I understand sometimes people need money and their not DD car has to go, but I see this so much where I am just curious now.
less than 5000 miles, sometimes even less....
NEGATIVE MILAGE!?

Ive always wondered the same thing actually. anyone?

Well 5k is a good bit if it's purely a summer weekend car or a track car. What's more puzzling is how every high mileage car is always all highway miles and AC always blows ice cold :bigeek:

1. Car blows engine
2. Owner gets pissed and decides to sell car
3. Seller realizes the car is not worth much with a blown up engine
4. Replaces or rebuilds engine
5. Sells cars with rebuilt or replaced engine
6. Still drives car while it's for sale---5k or les miles
Quite easy

some people build motors, have a daily, and after all the work barely drive it cuz it's built now.

Thats pretty much it. However I would personally NEVER buy a car that had a motor JUST rebuilt. Chances are, they did a quick and dirty rebuild and the motor will have problems again. Thats why they are looking to get rid of it asap before something else goes wrong.

i was bored with my dsm as it was nearly complete in my book. the car was a weekend car, or in some cases every other weekend car for two years. i put less then 5,000 miles on it in like three years, i barely ever drove it, i began making more money, so i wanted to step into some new territory.

5k+ on a race engine is a lil high. But mostly they are rebuilt to be sold or raced.
I'll be rebuilding mine motor in july or august and after that the car will be parked in the garage for show and race use only

some people that say 5k or less have no proof of it for mild builds and heavy ones if done right they probably wouldn't be selling it

for a lot of people, 90% of the fun is the work and planning and don't get a huge thrill out of driving around the final product. They want to build a project, then move on to the next.
I'm not 100% sure I'll be keeping the truck for too long after its done... I have other projects I want to do. I'd love to have a classic mustang built for auto cross, i want to build a factory five cobra, I want a 65-66 GTO, I want a 300+whp Omni, etc etc etc...
I can't have all that at the same time. I doubt I'll make the money in my lifetime to have all of those at once, so once a project is done... it may be time to enjoy it for the summer and move on to the next.
never know.

Maybe they rebuilt it to sell it since it will be worth more running than sitting.
Maybe they felt like a project because they were bored and felt like selling it afterwards.
I don't know.

i get bored with **** easily. ive built and cars and had them sold before i even got them running! but for the most part that was all for profit. now im just bored with the whole automotive experience. i finished my last project for the most part, and the car just sits now. i drove it yesterday for the first time in like 3 months:screwy:. ive had so many offers on it, but this is one that i have really become attached to, and my friends know how much i love it and wont let me sell (even though i REALLY want another bike).
it'll be 2 years in september since i finished the cougar, i'd say it has MAYBE 2500 miles on it. come to think of it, im not even sure i changed the oil since its been done:bigeek:. it seems the more popular cars i get, and anything thats automatic is sold before i even get it running in some cases. and i havent ever listed one for sale. im just "that guy thats always selling a car" that someone seems to know, i guess.

I know a person pretty well (my boss) who does this. He builts a car up takes it to a few shows then sells it. Then regrets selling it. :D
He does it because he likes the project aspect of it. Likes showing it off for a little then its time for something new.

As stupid as it sounds, i'm not into cars right nows. I just want to get a newer stock clean car that i will not modify for a while. Also part of the money will help go pay for bills. Plus i own a turbo honda, they're getting one in a million now and it bores me. I can always do it again later down the line.
