Was just curious to everyones opinions on them. My hatch didn't have one, my cousins hatch had the pop up one. I'm trying to find a coupe with a power one, but it's getting a bit difficult. I prefer them, but I see a lot of nice ones without them. Is it worth trying to get one installed? Like buying a stock one to put in. Obviously not doing it myself, I know it's not just cutting a square and drop it in.

Don't get one installed. You are asking for a leaky roof.

Nope, they were offered in the s13. Got one sitting in the driveway

Adding weight FTL.

Spoilerless, rear wiperless, no sunroof and MTX... FTW! Also shaved the antenna.

Not going to the extreme of removing the interior tho. I have to buy panels to replace what was removed before I bought the car.

I don't think I would cough up the money to have it done, I was just curious to everyones opinions. I'd really like to find one with a power sunroof, the idiot I was dealing with had one but the new one I just found doesn't.

No, if you can find one WITH a sunroof that's awesome. Don't waste your money to have it done though. I've heard nothing but bad things.

It depends on how its done.

If you section an entire roof on properly from the pillars... it will be fine.

Too many just try cutting a hole and making a rolled edge and installing an aftermarket sunroof, thats when you have problems. Some cars also have added reinforcements on their roofs (not sure bout 240s, but I wouldnt doubt it) to provide additional strenth and minimize any distortion.

sunroof ftl. Only my s13 coupe had one, it was the pop up kind, and I didn't like it. I never drove the car, and I didn't like it lol

Im keeping my interior, sunroof, subwoofer, and both amps. Just means I have to make that much more power.

My civic has a pop up, and I wish I had a power. It's not that bad, I just prefer power options.

My s13 has a power one. I dont really like it. I'll probably use it but I still dont like it.

05-25-2008, 10:55 PM
manual > power

manual is lighter and will last forever. power is heavier and breaks (and is usually a bitch to fix)

although my s12 has power windows which are kinda nice, but i would still swap them to manual if i had a chance. it has a manual sunroof though which is great. just put your hand up and open. i see no reason for power in one of those. but, might actually be cool for the summer time to hook to a remote so you can open it to keep the dash from cracking, and to close it if its about to rain and so on...

I liked the ones I've had on my hatch's where I can completely take them out, only thing I didn't like about the power one I had in my coupe was less headroom.

My s13 came with the flip up oem. I don't mind it. I had to replace the seals because it leaked air at 60+mph. Asside from that I haven't had a problem.

I agree with everyone else. If it has one great! if not. You're not missing out on much. I think it sits too far back to really be enjoyable. That or I drive like a granny. Who knows!

I'm only 5' 3". I hate it because I have to sit really close to reach the clutch th the floor. But if I lean back a little bit it's not too bad.

I have the manual/pop-up one in my S13. The gaskets are falling off so eventually I'm going to have to replace them, but its SO amazing to drive down 79 with the glass completely off.

Quick guide to pop it out in-case anyone can't:

On the hinge, pull the thing out to the left, then on the latch itself press the two black buttons and then slide the silver pegs out. Then stand outside the car, open the glass the whole way, and pull it towards the drivers side.

Then you can ponder over what the HELL those black flap things are for.

The one on my civic is a lot easier to take out. I can pop it out in like 20 seconds easy, don't even have to get out of the car.

You can probably do the 240's from inside, but I think its easier from the outside, thats just me though. ha

sunroofs are nice for DD. If it was any kind of a weekend/track car, i personally would opt out. For a few reasons:
- the weight added in
- the rigidity that is sacrificed (this is mainly a track issue/"beat the **** out of your car all the time" issue)
- the extra maintenance
- the more glass to keep clean and annoying water running out of the seals when you wash the car

For the same exact reasons I wouldn't want a convertible version of any car i would want to have fun in. It is a preference thing.

i love my power sunroof in my s13 coupe.

I have a 91 with a power sunroof and looking for new glass for it...

Hood latch fail at 100mph + not fun :bigeek:

I have actually thought about making a carbon fiber roof shell and removing the whole sunroof mechanism.

And I'd LOVE to get a CF plug for my sun roof. Make it....I'll buy one.

I doubt this will really see the track. I'm really not into that stuff. Road course would be fun, or just 1/4, but I don't like autocross and I really don't care for drifting at all. This is more of a weekend car I guess. I'm not going all out and making a track whore or some 1/4 beast, I just want to build it to my specs and have a car I can enjoy and ****.

Chronological Order of me and my Sunroof

I get my 97. I have a sunroof

It was awesome

Then I started to track my car

Then I didn't think it was awesome

Then I got GTR seats, as I wanted track worthy seats that reclined

Then I hated my sunroof even more, as I sat higher than the SE seats.

I got tired of my helmet in the sunroof (I'm 5'7", 160, not big) when in proper driving position.

I ganked off the rear pedalstals on the rails, made my own setup.

I now have an inch and a half of clearence, and the GTR seat sits even nicer as the ass end is slightly down.

Now I love my sunroof

I know that was a really gay way to go over my fealings of the sunroof, but it works out.

So my end thoughts:

-If I was building a track only car, it wouldn't make much of a difference. Eaisly fixed by removing it, and riveting a blank piece of sheet metal over.

-If I was building a street car, that saw track duty, I'd really try to not get a sunroof. That blank hole with a sheet metal cover would look like balls, and probably spring an annoying leak or whistle sound, regardless of the sealent used around it and amount of rivets used. With that said, low mount rails would probably eliminate any issue.

-If I was getting a D/D, that wasn't for any track use...the sunroof would be tits.

I love my sunroof, it adds like an extra inch or so of head room when closed and even more when opened. That's a lot to us guys who are taller than 6', I'm personally 6'2"-6'3" and still growing and I sat in a hatch once without a sunroof and could feel my fro rubbing against the roof so I hated it.

Why do you want a sunroof so bad? They leak, look stupid and as a **** ton of weight to the car. And they take up a ton of headroom when u add a roll cage.

Mine doesn't leak, I like how sunroofs look, and weightwise, they don't bother me. I'm not going to be caging the car and I'm not building it to drift or any of that. Eh, to each their own, I love them and use them regularly. The sunroof on my civic is always open.

My sunroof does not leak, how they look is a matter of opinion, and for a regular road car, the weight of a sunroof doesn't matter.

On the other hand, if you were buying the car to race, then the weight and headroom (including cage) does matter.

It all depends on what you're using your car for.

Also having a sunroof adds some chassis flex or so I've found. I know my car twists like hell when I go into or out of my driveway. I've driven one other sunroof-less hatch and it didn't really flex as much.

240s flex a lot between the firewall and fender area.

I know when I lifted the front of my 240 from base of the rad support, it was easy to see the front flexed up in the firewall-inner support area before the passenger area started lifting.

Thats why there are triangulated braces that go under the fender that bolt to the door hinges and a hole on the outside of the strut tower area.

I just welded all my seams solid... skipped that brace completelly.

Huh? 240SX aren't sports cars. They're passenger cars *points to VIN sticker* it says it right there. ;)

But My 240SX is "technically" my "sports car."

What I was saying was I hate luxury options because it adds more weight to the car, makes you lazy and just adds more electrical problems. BUT if I wanted all that stuff, then I would buy a 3000GT(as my DD cuz thats what I wanted to do) OR the Super-Hicas 240SX because its got the SE options plus 4-wheel steering, which is really good on gas mileage.

... So no, I don't like sun roofs/moon roofs. Base model for me please :)

I loved the power sunroof in my old 240, but if its not the power one then none at all would be better.
But having power kinda defeats the purpose of having a 240 as a "sports car".
