So Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson are in town filming the movie "Marley & Me." I was taking photos today during filming. I was on private property with the property owners permission to be there. The film crew asked me multiple times if I was working with them, I said no, that I live in town and was just taking photos. They told me numerous times that I was not allowed to shoot with a flash (which I obviously wasn't doing). All was well. They then started to tell me I could not shoot with my zoom lens (Nikkor 70-300 VR). I argued this saying that their movie set is in the public view and I could take photos of whoever I wanted in this situation. The guys argued with me and eventually they went away. I was NOT shooting while they were rolling due to the sound of my shutter. I only shot between their shots.

I then switched to my Nikkor 18-70 as I didn't need more than 70mm most the time and I didn't feel like getting yelled at by police who were standing nearby. I got some decent shots, but most aren't too good as it was night time and my lens isn't too fast.

Anyway, what rights do I have to shoot a movie set if it's in public view? Would a press pass have helped me in this situation? Any help is much appreciated as they film movies here many, many times a year. The movie itself was on PUBLIC property (a street):

The street is not considered public when its secured for a production, its actually considered a private workplace. The production company pays 10s of thousands of dollars to the borough for locations and also pays the city to have police and security on hand. If anyone is making noise or bothering crew workers, they would have complete legal right to remove you. If you were on private property or in designated crowd areas, and just snapping pics between takes there shouldn't have been a problem, though they could still remove you if they wanted to because technically taking photos or video could be considered copyright infringement. They were just being douches by giving you a hard time but if they really wanted you gone, you would have been. I'm not just talking out of my ass-- I used to work in freelance film and video production and sneak photos of the actors when I could

The reason they were shooting in West Chester is that it's actually SAVING them money by flying out all the equipment, film crews, etc., and paying for permits to film here than it is to film in Hollywood.
