I'm thinking about buying a radar detector and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations. Are any of them effective at warning of laser traps?
Also, I don't think they are legal where I'm moving in NY, so it would be nice to have something discreet, but the ones I have seen with the remotely mounted sensors are really expensive.

I had a cobra? i think it was, something like that, it worked well, problem is cops now how to work their little speed guns, i was on the turnpike, he was hiding in an outcove behind some trees, and the radar didn't go off until i was right across from him, because thats when he pulled the trigger, i don't think they're worth the money, just don't drive fast

I have a valentine. I will agree that it's the best out there.
But they DEFIANTLY go off for construction signs.

my friend has a cobra and it goes off at everything, it even goes off at those sighs that show your speed, and even the ezpass lanes on the trnpke. what constrcutions are u talking about that set them off?

^^uhh, those "signs that show your speed" are using radar, hence the reason they set off radar detectors.
valentine 1 or escort passport. I've had a passport for years now and my opinion on radar detectors is your needs depend on where you drive. When I lived in jersey the thing saved my ass on probably a weekly basis. Now that I'm out here in PA and travel back roads most of the time, since the small town local cops use some form of VASCAR to determine your speed my detector seems completely useless and I've already been pulled twice since moving here a year ago. Never got a single ticket while living in jersey.

+1000.
I have an Escort 8500 (X5?) and I saves my ass all the time. But I will also hugely agree you have to know where you are and do not use the Radar detector as a sole detection system. Just slow down near anyplace there could be a hiden car sitting, especialy overpass's.
I got nailed twice in two years. First in MD, I saw the trooper way up ahead...I had the radio up...looked at the detector and it was going NUTS! I knew I was in trouble right away. He pulled me over for 85mph, and let me go at 65. sweet!
Three weeks ago.....as some one posted in this thread, the officer hit the trigger just as i got close. Now, I was not going that fast, and in fact if i was in any other car other than my STI, I am 90% certain he would not have wasted his gas! As it is, he got me for just over 70mph. 2 minutes before I got pulled over I let an SUV go by me doing at least 80. He did not get pulled over!
Sooo, just drive carefully and respectfully. There are certain times to have fun with your car and have some spirited driving.

I had a Valentine once it got outdated I didnt feel like dealing with the updates and all that stuff. I picked up an Escort 8500 and I personally like it a lot better it has saved me more times than I can count.

I know the V had multiple boggy's detection also, but the 8500 is just a great unit. I always know if more than one cop is around or a speed sign with radar AND a cop is there also. Multiple boggy radars ftw.
