View Full Version : how much boosts can a stock 1.8 take?

I have a stock 96 miata with a Jackson racing supercharger on it. Currently it is set at 8lb and its a BLAST to whip around. Im prob gonna throw a LSD in it and put a smaller pulley on it. I was thinking about going to 10-12 pounds, 1 step colder plug. I want it to be safe considering its my DD now but want just a little more kick. I know the 1.8s have a lot of turbo kits out there and they are safe. just wondering what the max.

Wow you picked up another car? Boosted Miatas sound like a blast. I'd love to drive one/pick one up myself one day. Good luck with it. When you get a chance post up some info on it. I'd like to see it.
To stay on topic, search around on the site. I know there is a guy with a turbo miata on here running megasquirt. Find him and pm him with a few questions. I'm sure he could answer them if not at least point you in the rite direction.

It's not really a question of how much boost, it's just a matter of how much power the bottom end can handle. You can put down about 250-260 to the wheels before the bottom end needs to be reinforced. At 12 lbs, you wouldn't be pushing more than 225-230 at the wheels.

you dont think ud need an intercooler tho?
esp with the SC right over the exhaust mani it must get pretty hot...

ive been reading a lot of the forums and it seams like with a good tune and no crazy boost I should be fine. there was a 200,000 stock motor miata with 15lb on it.

Ok, well first off go to miataturbo.net
The JR supercharger isent very favored, partly because it cant really put out over 200 WHP. It is a small charger, and heats the intake charge alot.
If your going to run the 12 psi pully, you need a few things
some supra 305cc injctors, the stock ecu can idle these. (I have some for sale lol)
somehting to raise fuel pressure (not sure if you have anyhting now, I have a vortec unit laying around that will max out your fuel pump at 80psi, good for your boost pressure, altho at the limit.)
AN INTERCOOLER. you NEED it. The JR supercharger creates really hot intake air.
Also you need to monitor knock, get a oil pressure gauge from a 90-94 miata (They are real ones and twitch when there is knock).
Of course somehting like a megasquirt would be the best, then you could really control fuel and timeing.
Eaither way im running 14 psi on a stock 1.6l engine, should be at about 230 hp, with no poblems. almost 100k on the engine.
Take a look at my member garage, comment if ya like. PM me if ya need anything.

after reading a lot im just gonna put a LSD in it and leave it alone. its quick for what it is. prob just gonna sell it off after a few months anyway. but thanks for the info. I dont wanna dump money left and right into this thing. its a DD

I'd do the LSD and some sort of budget intercooler and leave it at that.

Superchargers in a miata are not very power friendly. If you cant bring the charge temps down you are gonna have problems with knock. What are you using for engine management? Powercard?
I think 200 is the limit for a supercharged miata, and if you intercool the one you have you may encounter idle problems because of the hugely increased intake plenum.
