ok well i had my bike for a while and its getting old, my dad had the bike before me and i have tried my best to keep up with it. So this year i went to change my oil like normal but they stopped making the grade that my bike calles for. the oil it needs is 20w40. I can't find it anywhere and my dad can't order it. So we went with 20w50 and now my oil light blinks from time to time. Its scares me because i feel like i am not getting enough oil. my father and i oiled up the oil fill and we see the oil moving, we watched the sight glass and we see it moving. So today i took one of my dads tools to check the oil pressure on my bike and i see it holds at a good psi range from idle all the way up to 11000 rpms. the light is for oil level but the sight glass is full is there anything else i should look for?? i am so lost witht his!!

its a fzr 1000. the manual calls for 3.1 with filter change. so after spending some time and doing a ton of research i found out that the light is not for oil pressure its for oil level. so tomorrow i am going to take the fairings off and look at the sensor on the bottom of the pan and see if the wiring is messed up. but i can see the sight glass and it is a little more then half full and i put exatly 3.1 in. i will find out more tomorrow

did you fill it with the bike standing up? or on the kickstand? if you left it on the kickstand theres waaay too much in it and you are cavitating

he measured so it wouldnt make a difference.
measuring is the way to go. you can never be sure with those site glasses.

i did it with the bike on a bike stand. the manual calls for 3.1 with fitler change. so today my dad and i took out the oil level sensor and we looked and my dad cleaned it up. we put it back in and topped off the oil because some spilled out from taking out the sensor and we have it perfect to the site glass. the light turned off. then i took it for a trip and it never turned back on. so i took it out to go play some bball and it turned on again. i called my dad and i asked him what did he think! we are both losts. So on the way back home it never turned on again! so i have no clue what the hell is going on here. i am going to take it to work tomorrow and see what happens!

my guess would be that the new oil is a different viscosity than the old, and therefore giving inaccurate readings to your oil light sensor, for whatever reason it is turning on. So you are probably going to be fine but you might want to call up your local motorcycle shop or look on a forum for you bike and find out what oil is supposed to be used interchangeably.

i see it the other way. god only knows what might be blocking the pan and the book may be wrong. has been in the past

yeah that is what we are thinking! i even went to yamaha yesterday and i told them my problem and they said the same thing. Since the old oil that was called for was 100% conven. oil and now i am using a syn. blend it might be causing this problem. They looked it up in there service manual (which i have) and they told me the same oil i know i use to use. They checked there Yama lube to see if they had it, and they said the same thing as my dad, "they just don't make that oil anymore". I always had a stock of that oil because i noticed i was seeing less and less of it so i stocked up. and this year i finished my supply and went with a different grade. So now i am lost. Basically it just gives me the excuse to get and get an 08 or 09 R1 :D
