... You want to make a MSP rear wheel drive?
Why wouldn't you start with something Mazda? Say RX7s or Miatas.
Nothing is just going to bolt under with out at least some fab work. Most installs will need a lot of work done. You cant just go off pics either LOL You need to do a lot of measuring.
Do you have any experience in fabrication?

going by his bagged truck id say he has atleast a little fab work experience. Either way, itd be pretty sick. Start by looking at what rwd transmissions will fit your engine, then find a rear end that is compatible with that driveshaft. Thats what i would aim for.

Dont want to sound like an ass... but just because somebody has a modded car... doesn't mean they did the work
The odd chance that there is a driveshaft the correct length is slim to none. It will be a custom unit which will allow endless amounts of rears used and wont be cheap.
His engine is mounted transversely... hes going to have to come up with custom mounts to turn it that 90* to make it longitudinal. Hes going to have to decide if he is going to even use the engine currently existing in the car. Then from there, shortening / lengthening any wiring if needed, full exhaust, custom intake, most likely modding the firewall to clear a bell housing.
Where are the coolant passages on your engine? You are going to have to run custom piping for that. Plan on keeping A/C and or heat? You will need custom lines for that.
He needs to come up with a full price list / budget, and then at least double it for a complete setup that is safe and doesn't look like **** (which doubles as being safe most of the time LOL).
I have approx 3/4 of a list made on items I would / things I would need to do to my Escort ZX2 to put in an XR6-t engine, T-56 trans, and IRS. Starting with pricing on 2x2 or 2x3 box framing, misc tubing for stuff like strut mounts, driveshaft loops, x-braces, misc engine/trans mounts, plate steel, EMS, misc stuff to make the engine more reliable like billet waterpump gears and better valve springs (they tend to float over 6,500 rpm and mild boost conditions). Then on top of those prices, tubing and various joints for making all tubular arms, coilovers, springs, swaybars, bushings and a list of what vehicles donor parts would come from that would or could be used.
You need to research the different items and brands of things that you could possibly be using to determine what is best for the $ and still retains a good quality. You shouldn't just start with an idea and run with it. That usually ends up with a hack job unless you have extensive prior knowledge. When you do these things, you always end up spending more than you originally thought.

a buddy of mine who builds dirtmodify cars from scratch brought it up to me awhile back when me and my brother had 2 honda civics...but ive been thinking about it today and i think im gonna go with a 350 engine and 350 trans with a posi rear outta like my s10 ss or something similar. now the rear will have to be narrowed and the engine will most likely be sticking up outta the hood. ill have my donor vehicle (fullsize blazer) hopefully by next month for the 350 (freshly rebuilt) and possibly tranny/rear but its a 4wd and i dont know much about 4wd so when i get under it i'll figure out what i can use and what i cant. first things first i need to strip down the protege and test fit the 350 before deciding on a IRS front suspension and what not.. im gonna have to tunnel for the tranny but not the driveshaft cause im gonna drop the factory gas tank and cut the trunk floor out for the rear end setup.

IRS = Independent REAR Suspension.
I'm guessing by the fact you are using a Blazer or whatever for a donor, you are going to have a solid axle rear.
Are you keeping it carbed (or is it fuel injected). If its fuel injected, pending on the intake mani and TB location, it could clear the hood.

lmao i was thinking u were talkign about the front like mustang II suspensions lol
yea i wanted to keep it carbed but idk itll be sweet having it all tuck under the hood..so thats TBA at the time

**** it, just run with it. Thats what the dude with the civette did, it seems to work. Ha. To be honest, first make sure you dont mind losing all that money just incase it doesnt come together. There was a guy on honda-tech that attempted to build a rwd prelude, after like 4 years he finally just gave up and threw everything out.

i dont doubt u, there are some crazy ass ppl out there...haha
just...make sure that 350 fits in the bay. as a mazda tech, ive seen my share of proteges and i dont kno how a 350 will fit....it makes it harder to visulaize in my head since the engine will be mounted rwd style....
weird man..
but i say go for it.
they used to make awd 323's so u may be able to find some parts that may fit so far as pick up points int he rear suspension area. since the protege is the direct gen after the 323 they continue to use some certain pieces to keep costs down.......dig around im sure ull find something

There is a guy with a 351, C4 trans, and solid rear in a ZX2... Some argue about the car saying its not a "true" ZX2 because it was tubed out in the front.
Another guy is putting an engine from a Foxbody in his with a solid rear, and another guy is putting an InTech v8 (Like Cobras but not hand built) in his.

ok so ive got a little update. may 9th we are gonna start tearing apart the mazda. just gotta pick up an engine lift by then. im going with a solid rear axle. right now im looking at a z28 rear axle with disc brakes and most of the suspension (dont know if ill be able to use the suspension or not). of course it will have to be narrowed down to roughly 32" (know for sure when i get the car in the air). im gonna order some 'gasser' (ratrod) 350 frame motor mounts (if the people ever email me back about them fitting on a late 80s 350)...im gonna have to figure away to keep the front end open i was thinking takign the back spindle assembly and moving it up front but then id have no way to turn cause theres no tie rod connections
but im still stuck between keeping it tbi or switching it to carb. id like to have it tucked under the stock hood...any opinions?
