Friend of mine is lookin into both cars and asked me for some advice, im a VW newb so posting here.

He is looking at the 1.8t jetta and GTI.

Main concern is the motor. They are both using the 180 horsepower motors (jetta is not the GLI). I am going on what he said I dont know the difference between the two.

He is wondering if its the same motor?? I personally know people pushing 15-20psi on the stock motors on the GTI, but he wants to do the same without shelling out the cash for the GTI/GLI by just getting a regular 1.8t and working that instead.

Are they the same motor? Are his figured for mod potential accurate?

First of all, the people pushing that much boost are doing so with chips, which cost around 500 bucks. ALL 1.8t's have an engine code: AWP is the 180HP version from 2002. Look on forums.vwvortex.com for more info.
The engine, if it is the same code, will be the same. The GTI and Jetta 1.8t both have the same engine and trans WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE GTI 337 AND 20TH AE EDITIONS AND 2004.5 JETTA GLI's. (They came with the 02m 6 speed trans from the 24v VR6.)
In short, anything with an AWP engine code will be 180 (crank) HP, jetta or gti.
PS I'd say 2 door GTI, it's lighter.

They are the same motor like he said.
The GTI weighs in at 2932lbs while the Jetta comes in at 3037, which is 105lbs of difference.

A Revo chip will bump the hp from 180 -> 207 (+27hp), and the torque from 173 -> 232(+59ft/lbs), and will run about $500.
There are other tuning companies, but im a mk3 guy so i dont have a big list of them.

Really what he should do is try to drive both of them so he can see which he likes better.

It also depends if the gti is a vr6 or not. You can get the gti in a vr6, 1.8t, or a 2.0. I have a 05 gli with revo and I love it. My gli is 190 hp stock. With just revo it was almost 215 hp. I have more mods then just revo but, the only thing like said before is that the gti is lighter then the Jetta.

What does that mean

He kinda tossed away the jetta, and is looking at the following

1.8t GTI 5-speed 180 horsepower
1.8t GTI 337 6-speed 180 horsepower
1.8t GTI 20th Anniversary 6-speed 180 horsepower

Reasons for getting one over the other, especially the last 2??

QTF = Quoted for Truth

Get the 20th edition. Or an R32 ftw.

1.8t GTI 337 - Only produced 1,500 in the US.
1.8t GTI 20th Anniversary - Only produced 4,000 in the US. Smoked headlights.

Both have the same exterior styling.
Both have Recaro seats, only difference is the color scheme.
Both have the 12.3in front brakes.

They basically are the same car with small differences.
Really the rarity is the only thing that makes them different.

As a 337 owner myself:
Like he said, they ONLY made 1500 337's, all made in 2002, all in reflex silver, all without sunroofs. All were the same car, in other words. They came with 18" special finished BBS RC wheels, and 1" lowered suspension (1" lower than the stock GTI.) recaro interior, red stiched theme on the seats, leather wheel, shift boot, and e-brake boot. Also came with the best of all the factory mods: THE 02M 6-SPEED TRANS!
The 20th's will all have sunroofs. They are a tad heavier. They came with 18" OZ Aristo's (.:R32 rims), the same suspension, the same trans, and the same seats, wheel, knob, and boot, but stiched in silver. They also have the silver trimmed gauge cluster (337 does not.) Also, as stated above, had the smoked (Factory Joey Modded) headlights. They made 4000 US 20th AE's. 1000 Imola Yellow, 1000 Jazz Blue, and 2000 Black Magic Pearl. They are also all individually numbered.

As far as why to buy over regular GTI- it's all about badges really. They have better pedal feel than a regular gti, the 02m is also a far superior trans. As far as speed's concerned; they're about the same. But to get a GTI to look like a 20th or 337 is expensive enough, and then you're just a clone.
To give you an idea of rarity, out of the ****load of cars at blown euroz, there were only 2 337's, and mine was one... About 6 or 7 or more 20th's.
All in all, I'd say go with a 337 or 20th! He would probably be able to finda 337 a tad cheaper too. And if he doesn't like the silver, tell him it will grow on him.... guarenteed, I hated silver before I bought it

Both came with the 180hp AWP 1.8t.

Edit: TELL HIM NOT TO DIS-COUNT THE 04.5 GLI!!! There's nothing quite as sexy as a Platinum Gray GLI, in my opinion.

And the other 337 was by buddy Yuriy, I have math class with him got a ride in the car once...stockers in the front, black OZ wheels in the back, car pulls pretty well.

So let me get this right, 337 for rarity and performance, 20th for some rarity and performance.

What differs between the 337 and 20th transmission?? Also, how reliable are these cars, we have been hearing different things and Ive never been a VW fan solely for that reason.

im kinda new to the vw scene but to my knowledge the 337 is a rarer find compared to the rare 20 AE's. theres a hand full of 20 AE's around my area but ive only seen one 337. like the other guys stated on here before there using the awp motor which i think is the 20v turbo engine (correct me if im wrong guys) and if thats the case both are 6spd. so from the performance end it of both cars are just the same. just one has more cosmetic mods over the other. i would go with the 20AE cuz i think that the chances of finding one are better than finding a 337. in my opinion at least.
me, myself plan on buying a mk3 gti vr6 soon to btw

It should be pretty reliable if taken care of properly like any other car. One thing he might want to look into before picking one up is if the timing stuff was done.

There is no difference between the 337 and 20th trans, they're both the 6 speed 02m from the 24v VR6.
Was yuriy there? I know his car, but I didn't see it at blown euroz... if he showed, than make that 3.

How is the regular 1.8t GTI compared to the 20th/337 performance wise?

How is the regular 1.8t GTI compared to the 20th/337 performance wise?

In comparison to the regular 1.8t GTI (if were talking 2 of the same engine code: IE both 2002's), the 337's and 20th's aren't much different. What makes them really different is the styling package, the tranny, and the interior upgrades. There really aren't any performance upgrades that come with the 337 or 20th. What I have noticed is: 337's and 20ths have the 02M tranny (6 Speed.) The clutch on these cars is considerably shorter and harder than a standard GTI's. The suspension is a tad stiffer, but not really that much more. However, in comparison to a 99.5 jetta, it outhandles the **** over a baseline 2.0.
Other than that there are only a few reasons which would convince someone to buy one:
A. you already have some modding done from the factory. You probably won't want new seats, and if you do, all you really gotta do is get them re-wrapped for a fresh look.
B. You'll have nice rims (BBS RC's or OZ Aristo's) from the start.
C. You're already 1" lower from the start
D. You have better pedal feel than a standard, 18t GTI.
and of course:
E: You are driving one of 1500 (337's), or 1000 (IY or JB 20th's, or 2000 (BMP 20ths.)
