I didn't buy the car for high hp. If I wanted a faster car, I would've bought a Z06 Vette. On the Miata, you get to a certain point where the hp changes the balance of the car and it's no longer a good handling vehicle.

Is it really a direct swap? I know the motor drops it without much work, but how will you control the motor?

The stock ECU won't run the KL, but the KL ECU won't run your cluster, alternator, etc. So would you will either have to replace the cluster or run both ECUs in parallel? I know its been done before, but not sure what all is entailed. Most I've seen are converted to an OBD-I harness.

Is this going to be a street car (i.e. - needs to pass inspection & emissions)?

i did a street tune, and got it into ball park. i did street tune using the innovate LC-1 and knock light. i have some spiffy logging software\hardware that uses GPS and accelerometers so i can tell if i am accelerating .001g's faster. so, i think i'm pretty accurate. the bummer part of that is that is i don't know exact #'s, but what do those mean anyways? everyones dyno is different. i can say that i logged 12.7@ 113, and that was with a 2.5 60' on stock rubber. right now there is just too much power to the ground. when my water\meth setup is complete, i will be dyno tuning that, and i will be going down to cp-e in maryland to do so. they know **** tons about this car. with my economic stimulus check i am going to be getting RX-8 wheels and 245's. that should help the traction problem a little bit.

strange that you want to port your wastegate. it looks as tho i have more mods than you, and i do not have any problems with creep. my main problem was swapping that stock BPV, because i was leaking boost lol. i slapped on the forge, and used the standback and did P.I.D. tuning to tune my boost. i used to spike to 21 and settle to 17, now i only spike to 18 and settle at ~17.6 (right in the peak efficiency range of our snail). no problems with creep here...

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s24/paddedwallz85/Mazdaspeed%203%20GT/screenshotboost14.jpg

i showed TPS because our boost is controlled a lot by the throttle. it is wide open until it builds boost, and then it closes up lol. i showed average time between log points, because i found that i go from total vacuum to max boost in .6 seconds. thats fast....

if you have logs showing creep, put them up! i have not seen anyone with creep on MS3. i was considering porting my turbo while i had it disassembled to change the seals, but because there was no evidence of it being a problem i didn't waste my time.

some mods are best saved for later and invest on other things first... perhaps, lowering springs, wheel spacers, intake, exhaust, lip kit blah blah. you all know the story, some people tend to just leap towards the end of the list instead of starting from #1.

like i said, supporting mods makes a huge difference.

well as far as power mods go, you have the catted downpipe-- I am running fully catless-- would probably explain it. If I put a hi-flow on mine I probably wouldn't creep anymore.

dyno numbers only count if you have a baseline and keep going to the same dyno, which I plan on doing. Gotta sell some parts!

The the numbers I have posted in my sig isn't even my current setup, its the txs cai and the txs tbe-- I gained more power from the AEM intake than the txs.

MS34ME!

my buddy has a corksport catless DP and he doesn't have creep... i'm just sayin, i have never heard of people having a creep problem on their stock turbo, no matter what the exhaust. i decided to go catted, because at most i lose 5hp and i don't have to worry about emissions or CEL's.

where are you dynoing your car at? and on what kind of dyno? i'd like to show up and see what kind of #'s i'd throw down on the dyno your going to...

i've never talked to someone that bought the TXS CAI... how is it? how are the fuel trims of the AEM and TXS vs. stock? the mazdaspeed CAI leans the car out a lot, thats why it has large gains.

I did my baseline and all of my subsequent runs at R/T Tuning. They use a DynoJet. I have not actually dynoed the AEM intake yet-- but w/ the TXS intake/TBE fuel trims seemed normal and went rich at WOT.

I didn't buy the txs intake-- they 'sponsored' me with some parts for testing purposes.

The txs downpipe is a full bellmouth to 3", to catless race pipe, to essentially a straight exhaust (no mufflers). The even the non catted corksport is a divorced style IIRC, which would still restrict flow.

at WOT in 6th I will spike up to the 20psi-- if it stays there for more than a few moments I am in boost-cuts ville

My next mod will be a FMIC for sure-- my stock IC was hot to the touch after only 1 run on the dyno--definitely holding me back a bit. That and a way to tune the bitch.

You should talk to Vince at R/T about getting your standback dyno tuned. I have yet to see someone actually get the standback tuned, most MS3 guys use it as an expensive boost controller.

MS34ME!
04-10-2008, 02:26 AM
the divorced style DP does not add any sort of restriction, in fact it is superior to bell mouth designs, but most do not do it because it adds costs to a part. bell mouths create a lot of turbulant flow right at the turbo, which impeads flow. however were talking only a few HP here so it is usually better to go with who is cheaper.

do you have any logs showing boost creep? you have a DH, can you post pics of your logs showing creep?

your spiking to 20+ psi is due to your breathing mods. you need a tuning solution. stock boost controller does not know how to react with your new mods. this is common.

eventually i will be getting a free FMIC, but this won't be for a little while. water\meth will tie me over until then. Prepare on getting yourself a CDFP soon, otherwise you can add fuel cut to your problems. this is another reason i am putting water\meth injection on.

and like i said, i'm sure my road tune is right around where i want it (conservatively fast). i am going to CP-E in MD. to run on an inertia dyno to fine tune my ignition maps, and to have another tune for water\meth. Our motor\ecu is a tricky one, i have noticed a lot of weird quirks about it. but with DI, you can safely run 12.1 AFR's, which is nice. anyways, cp-e has a MS3 in house that they have spent 100's of hours on, so i will trust my car in their hands vs. some other guy that will be learning on it. i'm sure Vince is good tho, don't take what i said the wrong way.

and your right about people using the standback as expensive MBC's... thats why cobb will make a killing with the AP, because most people don't know **** about tuning nor do they care, they just wanna quick slap something on and be done with it. thats what this is all about now-a-days. they call this site "tristate tuners" but how many people actually tune their car? how many people know what AFR's and EGT's are? sad.

WRXD

there is has never been any solid proof that a divorced wastegate or bellmouth dp makes more power or is better for a car. The Subaru guys have been arguing about this for years. Both designs have their positives/negatives but produce almost similar gains.

There is physically less interior volume in a divorced dp which is going to add more restriction (but less turbulence) any way you slice it. That part is just physics.

I sell performance parts for a living so I explain this to people every day. Hard core advocates of either design have never been able to produce and solid evidence that either way is better or makes more power.

Divorced downpipes are more expensive because they cost more to make-- they usually have to be individually welded instead of cast like bellmouths.

are you talking about fuel cut? i don't remember you saying anything about fuel cut, only creep, and that is why you are going to port the wastegate... fuel cut does happen, but since i have tuned my standback i have yet to hit it. usually people will get cut after TBE and CAI, and some after an IC too.

EDIT: here is a data log of boost vs. wastegate DC. as you can see the wastegate isn't really working hard to hold the boost down...

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s24/paddedwallz85/Mazdaspeed%203%20GT/boostcreepithinknot.jpg

keep in mind this is before i did all my boost tuning. let me come up with a graph of after i did my boost tuning...

MS34ME!
04-14-2008, 02:52 AM
alright dude, i made a few pretty graphs. boost spiking is a problem that you will see when you start adding breathing mods for this car. boost creep is a problem that i have never heard of on the MS3, no matter what downpipe people have. true, i do have a cat, but it is high flow and only subtracts 5hp vs an cat-delete DP from cp-e. i very highly doubt that little bit of restriction is going to prevent creep in my case. the spiking after you add mods is not a hardware problem, i.e. the wastegate not letting enough exhaust bypass the turbo. it is more of a software problem, because of the aggressive onset of boost mazda programs into the ECU for eliminating lag. a tuning solution will get rid of your boost spike issue, although i can only vouch for the standback and not what other people have done with XEDE or whatever. in my graphs i show throttle position sensor along with boost, because the ECU uses TPS to control the onset of boost more than it does the WG.

here is boost vs. TPS and boost vs WG DC, when i was untuned. this log was done doing a hard acceleration from 1st to 5th gear.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s24/paddedwallz85/Mazdaspeed%203%20GT/untunedboostvsTPS.jpg

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s24/paddedwallz85/Mazdaspeed%203%20GT/untunedboostvswastegate.jpg

crazy how that TPS follows the curve of PSI, eh? lol

here are tuned boost logs. I don't know how others do it, but the standback uses PID tuning to control boost. it does a good job, i'd have to say. I tuned this by doing 5th gear pulls on the highway. i would start at 2500RPM, and floor it, staying in boost for a couple seconds. you will see the WG actually closing up!

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s24/paddedwallz85/Mazdaspeed%203%20GT/boostvsTPS.jpg

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s24/paddedwallz85/Mazdaspeed%203%20GT/boostvswastgateDC.jpg

i hope this stops you from wasting your time porting the WG. i'm not going to say there won't be benefits to doing this, but def not until you get a tuning solution. if your going to port something, port the inlet and the throttle body. i have heard people getting good response from doing this.

i'm looking forward to seeing your logs... maybe we should get a mod to move this all into a new topic? we have taken this topic on quite the tangent...

Just moved to the West Chester area of PA a week ago. This would be my P5 tearin up the streets!

Just add blacked out head lights and projectors w/ HID and thats what it looks like right now. For the moment I am rollin with no grill cause I am waiting for my DG one to get here.

Thank you, but I think it is going to become a yellow (Competition Yellow Mica) at some point.....When I get the cash together to get it repainted, but that is not up high on the mods list right now.

My opinion, paint it if youre going to keep it for good.Once you go CYM and go try and sell it,its going to be a turn off for the 3rd gen freak when he finds out it wasnt an original CYM.Just my opinion but either which way, nice car and welcome!

I plan on keeping it. I love this car! Plus I have sunk WAY too much money into already that I would never get back out of it. And actually this car was repainted once before already, before I got it. It used to be brilliant black (It's a R1 & they only came in black, red or CYM - I think).

keep it silver or just go buy a true cym...

+1 on that one...I got a VR that I considered changing to BB but eventhough I've owned it for 10 years and doubt I'll sell I stuck with the OEM color(at higher cost).
These cars were sold in VERY LIMITED numbers in the U.S. Most of us have modded them beyond believe and top it all off some of them have been desecrated by V8s and show/no go trailler QUEENS.

I dont have a collector's FD but it holds true to the mold! A fast, nimble sports cars with a boatload of compromise to eclipse all else in performance!!!!!

BTW, I figured you'd say that Gio...Coming from a guy with OEM CYMs!!!!
oops did I let the cat out of the bag??

Well i found a evo8 spoiler in black for cheep so i had to jump on it and get it, than i bought the CF trunk so i can mount it, im working on getting Tein SS Coilovers and 18' Rims ATM (have payment on a FMIC and Turbo Mani so its going to be about a month b4 i even order them sadly) & im getting the DGM Frount CF Lip also, but its the money issue

I think he meant a conversion to make it look like the Mazdaspeed MX6. They did make them overseas.

Did you get the Mazdaspeed exhaust with the badge on it? What else is different about the Aspec vs Jspec versions? Suspension and frame/body braces? Do you have the electronic folding mirrors?

the wing is the most drastic change it's an actual mazdaspeed mx6 wing available only in japan also the klze 200 bhp engine that's in it i have a custom exhaust on it so didn't bother with the original mazdaspeed i think one person has it on mx6.com and it's only axle back but only the muffler is stamped mazdaspeed. i live in pittsburgh right now so not putting the lip on it. i have the jdm front end on it as well as taillights headlights and foglights the power folding mirrors i haven't put on yet either and thanks for reminding me cause they're at a friends lol

as for the mazdaspeed mx6 rims i doubt i'll ever find them i like the fd's on it personally. i haven't done anything with suspension on the car yet except for a rear strut bar there is mazdaspeed shocks for it but they are a neon green and no springs but i think corksport still sells them

the full mazdaspeed lip kit is next to impossible to find some have been fortunate to find the side skirts but the rear add ons no one has

me i'm happy with just the lip now

is it a true mazdaspeed no but it's pretty close

and there is only about 5 or 6 other ones that are all jdmed out

sorry for late response

If i went the V8 route, I wanted the aluminum block to try to keep the weight approx the same; plus LS1-T56 combos pop up for sale at a decent price sometimes, so i could get a comparative deal on the trans too.

The first Mazdaspeed was the Protege, before that there was a Indapendent racing team that was called MazdaSpeed before mazda took them over, anything before the MSP was not a MazdaSpeed, you can say. You could call it a Mazdaspeed but it wasnt badged with Mazdaspeed,

"
MAZDASPEED factory-engineered vehicles, performance parts and accessories, and motorsports programs are the ultimate expression of our Always the Soul of a Sport Car spirit. MAZDASPEED is the destination for driving enthusiasts who desire to experience Mazda at the highest, most exhilarating level.

MAZDASPEED's own grass-roots racing heritage is as authentic as it gets. It traces its origin to an independent racing team in 1967 under the name "Mazda Sports Corner" at Mazda Auto Tokyo, Japan's largest Mazda dealer. Impressed by performance potential of the Cosmo 110S, the sleek two-seat sports car marked the debut of the first-ever production rotary engine, the team ambitiously set out to establish a Mazda presence at major motorsports events worldwide. At the same time, Mazda was interested in proving the viability of its rotary engine to the world. The two goals came together with the racing team's 1968 international debut, fielding two Cosmos at the Nordshleife, Nuerburgring for the "Marathon de la Route," an incredibly grueling 84-hour endurance event. The surprise came when the little Cosmo took fourth place, a great achievement for a new racing team and a new car with completely new engine technology.

Over the next 15 years, the team of hardcore Mazda racers campaigned across the U.S., Japan and Europe in both endurance and conventional sports car events. After Mazda replaced the Cosmo with the more practical R100, Europeans watched in awe as two of the boxy hatchbacks dogged four Porsche 911s for 24 hours at the Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, claiming class wins and fifth and sixth place overall.

As Mazda launched new models, Mazda Sports Corner raced them. After the Cosmos and R100s came racing RX-2s and RX-3s. Everything then jumped up a notch or two when Mazda introduced the first RX-7 in 1978. Here was a car that would succeed in a variety of classes and, most noticeably in the U.S., would achieve an unprecedented 100 wins over the next 12 years in the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) Series.

In 1983, Mazda Motor Corporation brought the racing team from Tokyo to the company's corporate headquarters in Hiroshima to help drive Mazda's factory racing ambitions, and it was here that the MAZDASPEED name was born.

Now under the Mazda umbrella, MAZDASPEED continued to receive recognition for its amazing on-track performance and its many victories around the globe. Sights were turned to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Privateers had raced Mazdas through the seventies, but MAZDASPEED had decided that it was time to join the fray. The eighties saw some class wins, and then in 1991, the MAZDASPEED team succeeded in doing what no other Japanese auto maker before or since has been able to accomplish: capturing the overall win at the world's most prestigious endurance race.

Fearing a long-standing technical single-brand dominance, FIA outlawed rotary engines after the 1991 Le Mans race. Unable to race Mazda's trademark rotary engine in the world's most prestigious venue, MAZDASPEED began focusing more on the business side of motorsports and started developing and building aftermarket parts and accessories, while continuing grassroots motorsports initiatives.

By this time, it was clear that a disproportionate number of Mazdas were appearing and winning in small owner-driver sports car events all over the world, and that this was where Mazda truly belonged and should focus its competitive efforts.

In 1999, Mazda Motor Corporation took full control of MAZDASPEED and has used its talents to supply racing parts and serve as an umbrella for all of Mazda's motorsports activities. The natural extension of this was to serve the Mazda street enthusiast as well, which MAZDASPEED has done with an expansion of its parts catalog and now with the development of MAZDASPEED-factory-engineered models sold in Mazda showrooms.

With the introduction of models such as the MAZDA6, MAZDA3 and RX-8, it is more clear than ever that Mazda truly does infuse its products with the "soul of a sports car." MAZDASPEED is the highest expression of that soul.

info on parts

says stuff about parts, but ive been looking online, it doesnt say anywhere that its all factory and is installed in the factory to make a a True Factory built Mazdaspeed, cause at first Mazdaspeed was just a department makeing parts for the Mazda's.

"After the FIA effectively outlawed the Wankel engine the next year, the Mazdaspeed team turned away from professional racing and focused instead on enabling third-party competition of Mazda vehicles. Mazda assumed control of Mazdaspeed in 1999 as a tuning and performance parts operation within the company. In 2003, Mazda debuted its first consumer offered Mazdaspeed vehicle, the 2003 Mazdaspeed Protegé"

That is waht it says on Wiki, so they made the parts, but didnt havea True Mazdaspeed from the factory till the MSP.

mine trapped 104 with just an intake... that's mid 13's or so with a good '60 foot (which I can't seem to get with the stock bridgestones)
it's not a drag racing car though, it's more fun in the turns

K, So I don't know if I'm putting this in the right thread but since I have a mazda.. i'm just wondering if anyone can tell me why it does this sh*t
1: When the gas is above half tank, it takes off & drives perfectly; but when it's just getting below half tank, it starts to drive like ****.. I can put the pedal to the floor and it feels like it's not going anywhere at all.
2: Sometimes it'll start jumping forward.. even if i'm at a complete stop, it'll just jump?
