Is cutting through parking lots illegal?

I live 15 minutes away from my office and on the way to the office I usually cut through an abandoned parking lot because there's usually a long line for the left turn at this light. Tell me, am I doing something wrong here?

Technically you can't do that. But if its not in use right now I don't think you will have any trouble.
