How does everyone go about doing this?

What method are you using to adjust your gamma.

EyeOne (IIRC) makes some good stuff
I had mine done at school

It's pretty self-explanatory once you're in the program

Byran could probably give you some more info on it than I could

I have a Pantone Huey too. Not super professional-studio-type ****, but it definately got the screen on my laptop looking much, much closer to what I see on a print.

without some sort of monitor calibration hardware you're just guessing and there isnt much point.
i've got a gretag macbeth eyeone display, but i've heard the huey works well too.
