first, make sure the engine is COOL! i mean when you touch it... it should not be warm at all.
then.. cover anything you dont want to get wet... ie. electronics, filters, etc. ... then spray the entire bay down with P21s total auto wash cut 4:1... scrub/aggitate the stubborn stuff... and then rinse with a low pressure hose... wipe down excess water with a dry towel then allow to air dry. itll look almost brand new... if you want to dress it, i suggest something like poorboy's trim restorer... apply it to all the plastics, then wipe off the excess. itll look fantastic.
edit: do not pressure wash it.

I toss a can of degreaser in and shoot it with a bb gun, once that is done I squeeze in as much dish soap as I can (concentrated goes further) and break out the hose. this cleans up all the degreaser. then I drive around with the hood up to dry everything off.
but Chaos' way sounds more correct...

I personally use like B52 Engine Degreaser or Gunk's Engine Degreaser. Usually cleans it super nice. Then I usually follow it up with some CD2 Engine Detailer. Nice and purrrrty.

I am really....really....REALLY tired... because I just read that, got a mental picture of someone doing it, and laughed so loud I woke my daughter up... DAMMNIT... If I have to read Dr. Seuss's "Mr. Brown Can Moo...How about you?" one more time i'm going to go insane.

I worked with a guy years ago that would put a can of air freshener in the back of his mini van and shoot it with a bb gun...

power washing is fine, some people do it with the engine running, i would personally disconnect the battery, and watch fuse boxes/wires/the alternator

ok so pretty much just cove up the coil packs and/or take off the filters and cover up the intake. anything else i should be covering up? like the plug wires/plugs?

It was the name of a degreaser/detailer we use to have. i believe ardex made it, another good one is speedy. And the ardex details spray (aerosol can style)
