A friend of mine JUST bought her kia sportage, and from what her mechanic has told her, it sounds like it's thrown a rod. The thing was supposed to have a powertrain warranty, but theyre dickin her around on it. In the event that she has to pay out of pocket, i offered to swap it for her. From what ive found, the 95+ Sportage uses the FE3 engine, which also came in a few mazda's and a ford. Does anyone know where the best place to get one is? Can I use one from the mazda's? It seems there are minor differences like compression ratio and the manifolds are different. I only need a longblock.
Any advice/opinions/ideas?

The FE3 is a motor that was never used in a US mazda or Ford car. They are often swapped into mx6's and probes and are know for holding up well to boost. You wont have any luck finding one except for from another sportage, which is where most of the guys who do the swaps get them from.

Good info, thanks. I guess i could call around to the junkyards...
Would it be worth looking for one in the classifieds on a mazda forum?

Thats what I said.
I told her to get a nissan, honda, or toyota before she even bought it. She was so psyched about her new Kia, i didnt have the heart to be like "that things a turd." haha :-p

those motors are like gold to the people on the mazda forums, so your best bet is a j/y. they are an interference motor so maybe you can find one cheap that snapped a timing belt, and just use the short block.

www.car-part.com Searches junkyark databases for their inventory if that helps. I just did a quick search and there seems to be plenty of sportage motors around.

Thats what you get for buying a kia ;)
Tell her to walk into the dealership and if they deny her the replacement to say the word "lawyer" in any sentence..they will get on their knees in a heartbeat

so thats why FE3 didnt sound familiar to me.
u can try mazmart, they sell used and new mazda parts. but ur best bet is junkyard.

and for the record im surprised they give her the run around about the warranty. what yr and mileage is it? did she buy it used?

Bought used, the warranty specifically said that it covered the engine head, block, pistons, transmission, etc. It said a blow head gasket would not be covered, but thats it. Theyre giving her a real tough time about it. Car has like 85k miles, she got it from 611 Auto used car sales.
