So my friend and I just put an intake on an 07 STi and now it bogs sometimes in 2nd gear. Is there a way to fix this or is there something we should be concerned about? It's a K&N short ram. Thanks

I had the same problem with my KN system. Make sure the intake pipe isn't petruding into the cone.

Might wanna research the whole STi thing......

Subarus aren't very forgiving with intakes.
Exhausts and tunes are more their style.

Tell him to put the stock one back on, and call it a day.

Just get a K&N filter and take the silencer elbow off the intake piping.

edit: who the hell gave me negative feedback for this post...? It's good advice.. not bad advice... n00bs.

Have you tried to reset the ECU?

to relay the convo we had on AIM here for anyone interested in the info...

The 07 STi specifically has a lot of things that you need to be careful about. Its very possible to get it running like an animal, but it requires some basic knowledge about how it works and how you need to mod it accordingly.

First off... do not put a single mod on the car without getting custom tuned. I'd like to repeat that just for clarity do not put a single mod on the car without getting custom tuned.

It might even be beneficial to flash a "Stage 0" base map, which is set up for a completely stock car. (I'm referring mostly about OpenECU which is a free tuning program which is amazing, or there are also other options out there.) This will take help with some of the fueling transition issues that these cars can exhibit, and also smooth some things out for driveability, as well as possibly making it a little faster in the process. I haven't heard of a completely stock car blowing up, but I have seen some really bad knock from them... its pretty beat but at least you can flash a new map to help with this.

You want to mod? Thats fiiiine. However, you've got to know how to play the game and not just assume its the same as every other car you've had. Don't put an exhaust on the car and think its fine without a tune... because unfortunately it isnt. There are quite a few documented cases of 07 STi's that blew up with just a downpipe or turboback and no engine management. This relates to the fueling transition issue mentioned above, which I wont get into detail about here, but just understand its not a good thing. The same thing applies to putting a different intake on the car. Its very sensitive to even minor changes and the stock ECU will not take kindly to it.

The proper way to mod an 07 STi specifically is: wait until you have the mods that you want for the car, whether its simple like just exhaust or more extensive like turbo, injectors, fmic, etc. Install them all at once, and get tuned immediately after. Getting tuned would consist of a base map that your mods fit into exactly, or better yet getting a custom tune specifically for your car which should ensure it will run safely and also make great power. Tunes are generally have the best power/dollar ratio than any other mod so its worth doing.

Also make sure that you're taking your 07 STi to a tuner who has some experience with them because the ECU is set up differently than all previous Subarus and it does require some different knowledge to get set up properly.

To summarize. do not put a single mod on the car without getting custom tuned. Don't feel discouraged though, there are plenty of 07 STi's out there making 400+ whp, it just requires a good tune, its essential.

Any other question just post up and I'll help if I can.

Bryan... you should sticky this in the Subaru section... Since prices are good now, lots and lots of young people are buying them and don't understand these facts. In reality...the "effect's" of these mods on other year subarus may not have the 'blowing up result', but these rules pretty much pertain to any turbo'ed subaru.

Well just call it the "Do's and Dont's of STi"

Hey, we're not all helpless. Some of us actually do some research before we touch our cars.

But then again I only know about 1.5 kids (one of them is a little lazy about it) who put that much effort into it. So I'm all for this idea, just for the one or two people who might somehow miss NASIOC and end up here first.
