Maybe not, does this motor meet US diesel emissions? It doesn't say that anywhere in the article. If it doesn't, that car will never be sold here. Of course, I would give my right nut for one, but that's a different story.

Seriously barry good find thing looks BEAST
EDIT: Actually after reading the entire article we may just get this car here, it SHOULD meet the emissions and it also has exhaust filter's which is NEW technology

Diesel emissions rules are way different, that car totally would make it to the states if they tried, I guaruntee you it runs cleaner then a golf tdi and gets just as good fuel economy, dielsel is the way to go except its 4 bucks a gallon oh well

Awesome idea. I think the only diff between this and the NAIAS concept is the color?
However...Porsche 997 GT2 > *

It doesn't appear to have any safety stuff, like bumpers. Not to mention there is no market for diesel cars in the US, which sucks cause that car is evil.
I'd run it on algae oil.

My complaint about the regular R8 is that it's all bark, no bite. Face it, the car is slow.
However, this seems to finally fix that problem. I'd still take a 997 turbo LONG before the R8, but it is a badass car.
I think we'll see it eventually, in some form. The R8 screws the pooch when it comes to performance for the price.

Diesels are so tunable though and usually see huge gains with just a reflash.

The R8 competes with the Carrera moreso than the Turbo, although I'd have a Turbo over it in a second.

I was more so comparing the 911 turbo to the diesel R8, not the slow R8 (which would seem to be comparative to the Carrera, I should have clarified ;) ).
I'd take the regular R8 over the regular Carrera though.

im by no means knocking it. cause i am well aware of what its capable of. im just saying revving it out to a whopping 4500rpms does not make for the most thrilling sports car no matter how much torque it puts down.

^why? just because the tach doesnt read as high? I'm trying to think why revving higher would make it tons more fun.

Yea, however, this is an Audi, and they were successful the first time, so that does matter IMHO.

That is a presentation that Rupert Stadler of Audi gave. In it he states that "The launch of the V12 TDI is part of our broad-based diesel initiative in the US market". I take that to mean we might see the V12 TDI versions of the Q7 and R8.

engines that rev (and can withstand) really high rpms are thrilling by nature....but...
even tho 4500 rpm is right up there boring, the 700 some odd ft lbs of torque will surely compensate

Plus, with the added torque you can make longer gears and still get as good of acceleration so its not like the gears will be super short.

must be why hondas sell sooooo well. low hp/tq but high revs so you can get the feeling of being fast, well more like the thought of being fast... without actually being fast.

Physics disagree, power is power. High revs are better only when paired with short gearing. The reason a torque monster is fast is because the huge mid range torque equates to a very wide power band in the upper RPMs. The reason a Honda "feels" fast is because they often have a flat torque curve and therefore an upward sloping power curve. The change in acceleration as the revs mount makes it "feel" fast. In contrast the torque is usually dying off in a torque monster at high revs, which give you a flat, unchanging power curve that doesn't feel as amazing, despite being a lot faster.
I'd still have a gasoline R8, I really don't need 500 hp. Very cool though.

dragonfly2k3

hondas rev high because they have little torque but a decent amount of horsepower, they use short gears and high revs to make the most use of the top end power.

I don't consider something with 400+ hp slow, but that's me.

I meant it that there is a reason for hondas to rev high, not just to make lots of noise. Its because their small displacement only makes power at 6k+ haha.
Also, 400hp does not always equate to fast, a good power to weight ratio equates to fast. There are probably lots of vehicles with 400hp that are slow(big rigs?)

lol, well it is. For the money and what you'd pay with the premium, the competition with that factored in dusts it. Not to mention other "like" competition makes it seem like a TT with nawz.

I'm just saying that if I had a R8, I'd be a very happy guy. My not even 300 hp SAAB can already break every speed limit in the country in 6 seconds, being able to do it in under 4 as opposed to slightly over 4 just doesn't excite me.
Personally, I'll never have any of these cars, even with my good IT salary, so I don't care. Plus I think it's more fun to build a 500-600 hp engine yourself.
