Since ive been owned my first car, ive always had my inspections done illegally. Now that shop has (finally) gone down, Ive never really learned what needs to be done for inspection. Can someone point me to a website or let me know the PA inspection qualifications? Id appreciate it. Thanks.

The only site I know has the inspection handbook in a pdf form and it is very detailed so much so you may get lost within the details. You shouldn't be getting the safety inspection done illegally since it is all safety checks (brakes have enough pad left, windshield not cracked in the critical area, shocks/struts aren't worn, good balljoints/tie rods, tires have tread, etc..) the emissions is what most people get illegally done, and that varies by county. If outside of philly and pitt and not in the surronding counties, it is just visual, but if you are in delco, montco, philly, etc, you need to have the car put on the dyno to do a two stage emissions test with a sniffer.

Quote from PennDot http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/inspections/safety_stationmech_faq.shtml#Q07

"What are the inspection criteria for passenger cars and light-duty trucks?

Safety inspections for passenger cars and light-duty trucks require that the following items be checked: suspension components, steering, braking systems, tires and wheels, lighting and electrical systems, glazing (glass), mirrors, windshield washer, defroster, wipers, fuel systems, the speedometer, the odometer, the exhaust systems, horns and warning devices, the body and chassis. For a complete list of the rejection criteria for passenger cars and light-duty trucks, please visit the PA Code Web site."

Edit: found a better non-pdf version which is easily understandable
