awesome shots guys... i just got in. i honestly am not feeling too good about my shots but we'll see. the first time you fumble around with a brand new camera should not be in pitch dark and freezing cold :(
damn u just bought that d200 not too long ago, why did u do with it?

i have it... needed a 2nd body so i got a D300 to go along with it :).
chris215 and i like rice... what lenses are you guys using? i dont have my exif viewer installed on this comp, but both of yours came out far better than mine. all of my fully zoomed shots still require quite a bit of cropping and arent even worth posting, its pretty weak. mind sharing exposure, iso, and lens info? and how much of a crop? i'm just surprised at how crappy mine came out. i didnt have too great of a location, not nearly as dark as i had hoped but oh well. it looked cool to see in person, the photos just are pretty meh.
here are the only 2 worth posting from my night...

thanks, had to compensate for my weak moon shots with something else. actually conditions and location were really poor for that shot but i'd like to go out and experiment with it again soon on a night thats not quite as cold.
cold and windy nights are the best, u cant ask for clearer skies
how long was the exposure on the second shot, and what F stop, im assuming you were using your 80-200mm for the moon shot?
TROLL
02-21-2008, 04:22 AM
yeah first shot was at 200mm with a 1.4x without much of a crop.
second shot was bulb exposure... about 15 mins at f/11 i think at iso 200. i'd like to find a more interesting foreground for the photos next time, in fact i've got an amazing spot in mind but its private property and its at least an hour away.
next time im up the mountains im bringing my tripod, u see stuff in the sky ull never see here, the population is triple digits and there are no street lights, parking lots or stores for miles and miles

1.6x, 70-200 2.8L IS with 1.4x TC (shot wasn't zoomed in all the way)
I had the camera and tripod set inside, ran outside, snapped off 4 pictures, ran back inside. I hate the cold.
Bogen 3021BPRO legs with Bogen 322RC2 head.
The first shot has a recrop of excess space around the left and bottom. The second shot is a crop of the first shot.

ha ok so one of you has exposures much longer than i expected and the other has much shorter.
i was shooting between 1/10" and 1/50" at f/4 at 800-1600 iso... as you can tell i was clearly not sure what would work, and it didnt. i'm really not sure why but they dont look sharp and starting to get a bit grainy. i was concerned the lack of sharpness was because of my shutter speed being too slow to freeze the moving moon, but i guess thats not the case. i was shooting on a tripod of course since i didnt mention that. i was also using AF and it looked sharp through the viewfinder.
i like rice... 1.3" at f4.5 at iso 800. this is a much longer exposure than i thought was possible to freeze the moons movement, but now i know otherwise. you're also letting in a lot more light than i was... i guess this was at full eclipse so it wasnt nearly as bright? i didnt really shoot it at full eclipse because i expected it to be fully dark, not like in your pic. i think shooting at full eclipse is much better because of the evenness of the exposure instead of having a sliver of the moon peeking out thats like 8 stops brighter than the rest.
and chris215... your exposure was really 1/400 at f/4 at 200 iso? thats... a lot different, but again you shot at partial eclipse and exposed for the moon so maybe its possible.
i'm just trying to find out what i didnt know last night so next time i can go shoot this properly...
oh and i listed exposure info above on the 2nd pic... it was about 15 mins. it'd be a lot sweeter looking in a darker area and if it was an hour or longer :).

I underexposed the shot by about 2/3rd f/stop so the shutter would've been longer if I exposed it properly. I stopped down the lens to 4.5 to make sure the image was sharp. I wasn't too worried about the shutter speed as long as it was below 2 seconds to avoid moon movement.
The shot was about 5 stops darker than normal for a full moon, which is why the shutter speed was longer. I didn't spend much time on it since 1) it was cold, 2) I'm not much into this type of photography.

1st, 4th pic: 1/400 at f/4at 200 iso
3rd pic: 1/640 at f/4 at 200 iso
Yeah I guess, I focused on the moon since I couldn't get a good pic of the eclispe.

Shot with my 40D and 70-200 f4. It was two shots overlaid for good detail in both the shadow and the highlight. You can also see the two stars that formed the triangle with the moon. That alignment was said to take place once in a millennium. I'm not huge into astronomy but I think it's pretty cool to have a shot of something like that.

Thanks. I just placed them that way. I wanted to show the actual movement but the moon was starting to move out of the camera frame. So for the last couple shots I had to re-position the camera.
