Just started and i got my own office, hellz yea.

Funny thing is, while i was doing what i was told to do a dude came in the office and was like,

Hi,
Im here for our appointment at 2.
I had my mouth full of candy too cause a lady opened a $50 000 000 account who happened to own a chocolate company and sent us a **** load of candy.lol

Every office had a lil tv with the financial news on, they were talking about the video games (xbox, PS3, and Wii) for a while lol

I guided him in the right direction. :)

If you guys only knew how much money pplz invest, dammnn...

Ha ha, Yea doing some work with Morgan Stanley. Not sure where in business i wanna go yet though, just getting some names on paper right now to back me up. Hopefully doing another internship with an advertising company over the summer if i have time (getting wasted with friends at the beach is more important, lol. J/K), hopefully gonna work with a photographer around hot models. :)

These days its not as much about what you know, its mostly about who you know. Once you get in the door, they will teach you.

Oh your in the Morgan Stanley east coast office...our project manager for them worked out of that office...but he was just let go IDK if you would know him or not. We arent doing that expansion, i actually just finished working on Blue Bell & Wayne (Valley Forge) PA...

I’m actually in a paid internship right now (yes, they really do exist) and I’ll be done in about a month (been in it for 5 all ready). I’m happy I’m making money with it, but it’s the experience that really gets you ahead, and is why I’m really doing it. So, good luck to you my friend. Make a good impression, and maybe they will have a job for you when you graduate.

Hmm maybe knowing how to spell opportunity is a part of wanting the networking opportunities haha jk. But no seriously, internships are a great way to get started in the business world. Look at apprenticeships in the unions. Granted they make a lot more in most cases, but its just an analogy to say that everyone has to start somewhere. A good friend of mine got an internship which led to a full time job at deloitte making pretty good money off the bat

I agree with some of you and then agree with others on other points. I agree that networking is very important in certain things that people want to do. And internships are an amazing way to get a good name in a company.

BUT

Internships should not be looked at as highly as they are. It is all bitch work that other people dont want to do so they give to you. It doesn't help you in the industry at all besides saying you worked for so and so big name company. I think it says more if you actually worked hard throughout your schooling doing something for a long period of time and kept a good standing name with the company than taking a non paying internship at some company while someone else pays for your actual living expenses (or you have another job...which is a different story)...but the majority of the cases that I know of are nonpaying internships giving people a good name when people who actually worked hard as hell in a company they cared about get nowhere.

Sorry for the little rant, but congrats to you on getting in there and to the future of making a ton of money cause you were there.

ps-networking is actually knowing people that can do things for you or help you...I don't consider being a bitch for a company networking at all. (Just so I dont offend anyone or anything...I am not calling the OP a bitch or anything. I am actually a bitch for a company right now...and it will NOT lead me to a better job in the field...so maybe its just that I am disgruntled haha)

Yea, it definitely sounds like you are a little biased since you apparently are in a very unprofitable internship yourself. I’ll meet you half way and say that some internships are used for simply bitchwork. I’ll even go out on a limb and assume that those are normally the non-paying ones because the business thought they would pick up an intern for free and make them do whatever. If a company was paying the intern, they’d be more likely to have them do some actual work instead of “go clean up the closet.” If you get the right internship, it will help you in the industry. Allow me to proudly use myself as an example. I’m an engineering student at Drexel University, and I’m interning right now at an engineering firm. Here, I’ve used my knowledge from school, applied it at my intership, and have gotten some experience while designing additions to houses, designing the fix for buildings when cars run into them, supporting houses when the soil they bare on needs to be excavated, ect. What I’m doing at my internship, I’m proud of and I’ve learned a lot which I will undoubtedly use in my career. As far as networking goes, even if you’re doing bitchwork for someone, I don’t see how that’s now networking if you’re at least interning in the right field. I’m sorry to hear that you think you aren’t in the right job. My advice to you would be seek out a better intern position somewhere else where they respect you.

The purpose of an intern is to be someones bitch. An intern is given tasks that no one else wants to do, or doesnt have time to do.

An employee who completed all 4 years of college and maybe graduate school, is not going to spend his time on re-refiling files or stuffing envelopes, therefore u grab a college kid who wants a big name on his resume and make him do all the biitch work.

Although there are companies that actually show u around and give u a basic idea of how the job is done.

The purpose of an internship is to be someone’s bitch? That's sad, and not always the case at all. They can hire anyone off the street to do filing if that's what they want. Not everyone has completed 4 years of college, so they can hire someone who hasn't. I got offered 3 internships and they all pay pretty well considering I'm still a student: well enough that they wouldn't use me just to file things. I feel bad for you guys if you all got the bitch work. Maybe it's a business major thing? You tell me.

Sorry if I misled, I am not an intern anywhere. I am just everyones bitch haha, but I have an interview today (if not cancelled from the snow) at a place where I can make a great career for myself if I get in there. I am still in school and it will allow me to finish easily while working still and get paid a good amount now and obviously more then. I understand internships and do believe that there are very very good ones when people actually do learn something from it, and I applaud you for getting a good one and getting paid for it too. I am just one of the people that believe you should be rewarded for your hard work and not just because there is a name on your resume that everyone knows.

I agree with everything except the fact that you think that my attitude would make me always the bitch. I am not saying networking is bad...I know it may seem like it, but what I mean is that I just hate how the majority of the times, internships are just bitch work, and I dont call that networking just because you have a name on your resume. I consider networking actually knowing people...like you do/did to help you get into your position. I am going to an interview today as stated above, that can pretty easily become a very prosperous career, and I got the interview because I know people. I also believe that I will get the job and suceed because I know what is expected due to the people I know and because they will see my past experience (not just bitch work btw...I got a little stuck with that and makes it seem like thats all I have done) and I will live up to and beyond what is expected because that is the type of person I am. I just dont like that people solely rely on names when its more than obvious that they dont deserve things. I have seen it all too many times.

It seems like they didn't really earn it, and the quite possibly aren't the best person for the position, but that's all part of the game. I say, do your job, do it well, and things will work out. If you have a good personality, you're better off too. I'm personally in it for the experience, but that's just me. Two of my offers were from large companies like Sunoco and PJM Interconnection, but I decided to go with a smaller engineering firm because I thought they would be more likely to teach me (rather than go with the large corp just so I could say I worked for them). I totally agree with you 100%. I know its part of the game but truely think that if you do things right, and you have the right mentallity about it all along with a good personality, you will make something eventually. Its just when people rely fully on the fact that they know someone that bothers me. If you know people and work hard to get there, thats when I truely think it makes sense. I have worked very hard in my past and currently, no matter what I have done, and I know that it will get me a great position at a promising job sometime soon.
