fuel pump not priming

not sure where to post this, i figure this would be the best place

this is on a 89 civic dx hatchback with a b16a swap

about a week ago, i was doing about 65 on the highway and it felt like i just took my foot off the throttle. pulled over, it started up once then died. now i havent been able to get it started since.

so far ive replaced the main relay and the battery. both didnt help, ive checked for voltage at the fuel pump and sometimes i get nothing and sometimes i get 2-4 volts. im not sure if my multimeters dying or if the cars just being sporadic.

anyone else gone through anything like this? id appreciate any help i can get.

Check your voltmeter on something that you know gets power. Turn on your headlights and test the wire thats hot to them. If your voltmeter is reading correctly, then your fuel pump itself is probably bad if replacing the relay didnt work. I had to replace my fuel pump a few weeks ago. It was a pain in the ass. Took me about 4 hours.

when you turn you key to start, but dont turn the engine over, do you hear it whine or make a "woosh" sound? If not then i would refer to what i mention above.

i agree, turn on the key but dont turn the car over, and u should hear hte fuel pump, the one in my EG is really loud. if not, then start playing around with a voltmeter, im sure its either the fuel pump or the fuel pump relay!

nope, the fuel pump definately doesnt prime when i turn on the key. i even disconnected the fuel feed line to the fuel rail to check while cranking. nothing.

the main relay is brand new so thats definately not it. i geuss i'll try to hardwire the fuel pump to see if it works that way.

yea try that. You might be able to hook the fuel pump up to a 12V battery. Idk if that would work. You can check most electrical components for cars that way. Typically a fuel pump doesnt cost that much money. I would do it yourself though, most shops ask for quite a bit of money to do that...maybe 350 or so. Not worth it in my opinion. Drop the tank on your own, or check under you back seat.

unfortunately i have never owned an EF, but on an eg the fuel pumped can be changed in under an hour without ever dropping the tank(although it is recommended)

The EF is a huge PITA to change the pump, I suggest hard wiring the pump to the battery, you ony have to extend and touch the hot wire, the other is grounded to the body, if it does not fire your pump is bad. I suggest just buying a Walbro 190 as a replacement, its cheap and simple to install.

I run dual Walbro 255hp's and I bypassed the OEM Relay and ran 2 30amp bosch relays back by the pump to make diagnosing problems like this alot easier, and if a relay does break its a 30sec swap.

check the resistance of the pump.
check the resistance on the wire from the main relay to the pump.
check for corrosion on anything

Did you test the relay out of the box ?

the main relay is brand new so thats definately not it.

Do you have another car you can try it in by chance? I've seen new ones that were bad out of the box...
