Well I am contemplating on selling the car I just got 2 weeks ago, what I thought was just a loud/sticking lifter turned in to a loud knock whick sounds like it was coming from the head. Not sure what the problem is and I don't really know if I feel like messing with it yet. Its a white 91 TSi FWD, 125k on body and am unsure of the milage on the motor. I was told by the previous owner it has had-
Timing belt done
New water pump
All new accesory belts
Head was professionally cleaned and redecked
Balance shafts removed
Mitsu head gasket
ARP headstuds
SS valves
Crower springs/retainers,
New valve stem seals
16g turbo
Rebuilt alternator
Magnecore plug wires
K@N filter
Punishment Racing UCIP
Manual boost controller
Short throw shifter
Brand new leather weighted 2g shift knob
A pillar 2 gauge pod
Autometer pro-comp ultralite boost gauge and A/F gauge (A/F gauge isn't hooked up
Sony CD player
Aftermarket 5 spoke wheels with new Dunlop z rated tires on the front
Things I have done since I got the car.
Changed the oil/filter (probably will be drained though to check for metal shavings)
Changed gear oil using GM synchromesh
Installed new Punishment Racing UICP
Not installed but will be included with the car if the price is right
Buschur Racing 3" Catless Turboback
Brand new set of Topline revised lifters
2g MAS with plug
If there is anything else I can think of i'll post it
It is a fairly clean car, sometimes is notchy in first. I know the problem, just haven't fixed it yet.
$2,000 OBO No lowball offers...

You might get 1k with the blown motor...mainly because of the parts and the condition of the car.

Umm....first, it doesn't have a blown motor and second what is wrong with the condition of the car? I'd like you to find me another that is almost as clean as this for less then $3,500. Personally, i'd rather buy a car that is mostly stock then buy one that is modded to hell and back.

Prove it. Drained the oil and there were no shavings, pulled the plug wires and the sound stayed the same, the sound is coming from the head. If it were from the bottom end when I pulled the plug wire on each cylinder the sound wouldve gotten quieter because of the load taken off that cylinder. So what if its FWD? Your Honda is FWD isn't it? Oh, its N/A too...Nevermind you have VTAK so that makes it teh faster. If you don't have any suggestions or an offer don't post anything.

can u take a video of the knock? my GFs talon, spun the rear balance shaft bearing, adn the balance shaft started knocking. sounded like lifter tick on crack. not a huge deal, but this makes the car worth no more than 2grand. if that is the case, its a sound the new owner would have to hear for themselves.
good luck with the sale. and are u positive the the balance shafts are removed? alot of these cars just have the front belt removed and the rear balance shaft is usually still in place. this is the "quick" and easy way to "remove" balance shafts. if they are physically removed from the car, then i would have absolutley no guess as to what the knock is.

I hate to burst your bubble...but i find it absolutely hilarious you would compare your DSM to my Honda...LOL..
DSM's are proven peices of **** that havent held their value since they left the production line...
Usually (KBB) Kelly Blue Book estimates car values a little bit less then what you can sell them for...for DSM's...haha KBB is a god send...
Good luck. Looks pretty clean. But a knocking sound coming from a 4g63 is Bad News my friend.

Nevermind you have VTAK so that makes it teh faster.
dude, I believe the proper spelling is V-tech, noob
lol, anyway before any gets bent outta shape on the whole knocking sound, do a compression and leak down test. At least that was how i determined i blew out my valves. Also as mentioned above, check to see that the balance belts were properly removed as many f** that up and lead to serious damage.
And to all, A DSM is just like any other car out there in terms of reliability. If the car is taken and not beat to ****, then it will last. The reason DSMs get a bad rep is because people buy used ones and start doing power upgrades vs. maintenance first. A lot easier to extract quick power cheaply out of a DSM vs a Honda, there fore more stuff breaks first. Got nothing against honda's, its just that I favor the DSM's more
Good luck Jeff!

You couldn't pay me enough money to drive a Honda, Proven pieces of ****...thats a Bold statement...Seems you like the rest of the people that say DSM's are unreliable and always break don't know your elbow form your asshole.
Have you EVER once MAYBE thought that the person who owns the car and how well the actually treat it would play a factor in how "reliable" a car is?? The reason why DSM's have a rep for always being broke is because they are cheap...but there easy to fix parts are abundant and mods respond very well when done properly therefore making it one of the most abused yet purpose built cars out there...Aside from a Foxbody I'd say the DSM platform is the cheapest way to get yourself a 12 second street car for under 3 grand...You could spend 3 grand on your Integra and still not be out of the 13's
Good luck with the sale if it was AWD I'd be all over it.

When I daily drove my 99 GSX for 3 yrs, it never once gave me any problems, and to top it off it was being modded the whole time. They are unreliable when the person working on it, knows nothing about them. And if its an older one, you gotta make sure the maintenence is done first, thats the #1 rule for any car. DONT HATE ON DSM's. One of the BEST BANG for the BUCK cars hands down.

Yea, like I said, I just got the car 2 weeks ago so I was still trying to get all the quirks worked out. When I went to look at the car I did a compression test and it came back 170psi across. I had a 98 GSX A/T and the only thing that ever went wrong with that car was the trans. Decent HP + Stock A/T trans wasn't so good after 2 1/2 years of DDing anywhere from 10 to 150 miles a day. Had the trans replaced and it was good as new. One thing I noticed when I pulled the VC off is that 1 of the rocker arms is different then all the others and 2 of the lifters "clicked" when I pushed down on the rocker. Maybe caused a lifter to collapse. I have new lifters soaking in oil right now to put them in and am getting a set of new rocker arms from a buddy of mine. If that wasn't the problem, it could be a bent valve or something. I haven't really had time to go out and mess with it because I was a sick as a dog earlier and this sleet/rain/snow wasnt helping in an unheated, not lighted and leaky garage. Once I figure out what is deffinately wrong with the car i'll post back, if its something I don't feel like fixing then the car will probably be for sale. Thanks for the replies guys.

You have to be kidding :screwy: I have owned about a dozen DSM's and not one has been a POS. They are **** when people like you buy one and have no idea what your doing...
On another note.. DSM's value's have skyrocketed since the release of the EVO and STI in the states.. DSM's don't sell @ KBB values.. I have never bought or sold one at book value other than one that I found from and old man that had no idea what he had...
Sorry to jack the thread, but good luck with your sale!

Jeff822
02-16-2008, 02:07 AM
Na not yet, still haven't gotten a chance to throw them lifters/rocker arms on yet. Problem is i've never done timing before so I was waiting for some who I thought was my friend to give me a hand, he hasn't returned my calls/texts since Wednesday though. Another frined of mine might be giving me a hand tomorrow.

It's ok. Yea I hope considering I paid 3 grand for this car just 2 weeks ago, well now 3 weeks and got to drive it 1 week. I wan't to try to get at least something back you know, and I need another car. If its not the lifters which i'm *hopefully* replacing tomorrow i'm pretty sure its a bent valve.
