The 91-95 MR2 is basically my dream car. I couldn't really afford one in good condition right now and being the impatient ****head I am, I went and bought one in bad condition. I feel like it'd be a lot more fun to spend tons of hours working on it and making this car fully mine. I've had it for about 10 days now, I'm gonna keep updating with pics but here are a few to get started....

The day I got her, no battery, blown engine, hardly any interior parts...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2306/2198379714_911a82f299.jpg

Got a battery from Dan pancoast (member on here) and finally put down those damn windshield wipers

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2031/2211961335_155fe7e263.jpg

a SMALL portion of my interior parts, stock interior was blue, i'm gonna sand all the parts down and then paint them black. The big console and e-brake in this pic are already black as I bought those from another MR2 owner

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2332/2211961627_d32922f9e1.jpg

Car almost completely gutted...

My car with Dan Pancoasts MR2

As you can see I have a lot of work on my hands. I'm hoping that within the next 2 months I have a completely black, brand new OEM looking interior.

Nice man,Is the car a turbo or NA?

What are your plans for it?

amit
01-27-2008, 09:42 PM
Non turbo and it will stay that way till I feel comfortable with driving MR. I can't afford to wrap my dream car around a tree :)

My plans are to restore it to stock but..better. I wanna paint it a dark purple and go with some gold sport max wheels. TRD suspension, all that good stuff.

If any of you guys know anyone who can hook me up for paint, please let me know! If I can get it painted before June that'd be great. I would prep for paint and everything to cut some costs too.

ahh its not super difficult to get used to,take the car to a parking lot and practice and then i suggest going to some autocross events aswell. You'll enjoy the car a lot,but I would definitly suggest swapping it,the stock 3S motor isn't the quickest thing so you'll be fine getting used to it with that.

lagos
01-28-2008, 12:33 AM
I 2nd the 3sgte swap recommendation. Since you have to buy a new motor anyway, might as well put the right motor in there from day one.
Make sure you join mr2oc.com too. It's THE place for any mr2 or 3sgte info.

amit
01-28-2008, 07:31 AM
I've actually already bought a 5SFE. I'll get a turbo engine soon enough, no worries. Also, I'm already a member on mr2oc, my board names bansy.

bmatyeah
01-28-2008, 12:31 PM
5s is plenty for now. Its such a light car, are you keeping it stock exterior? Any upgrades to the 5s?

(i was the one who did the engine swap with jmond, i have the same name on mr2oc)

i third the 3SGTE swap, but you already know that amit ;-)

the project is coming along nicely so far, when can i come up and check it out?! i think i still have some random MR2 parts in my garage i'll have to find and hook you up with.

01-28-2008, 02:19 PM
I suggest getting coilovers instead of a trd spring shock set up. It will give you much more adjustability.

justinlansdale
01-28-2008, 04:23 PM
yeah don't go TRD springs, at least go s-techs or if you wanna be baller...go k-sport or tein coilovers.

PaleDSM
01-28-2008, 10:19 PM
Let me put some coil-overs under one of my older brothers. ;)

You are starting with a pretty rough base but with time and money I am sure it will come out great.

As for the console so far I have...

-De-riced the gauge cluster
-De-riced the paint on the console
-Got a headunit
-Repainted the A/C button that is so prone to wearing away.

I'm willing to start putting this all back into the car...if only I had a dashboard

DPancoast
04-02-2008, 08:07 PM

amit

Cop: Kid do you know how fast you were going?
Amit: Uh ok let's see...my stock speedo goes to 140 and the needle was about a third the way there so I'm gonna say about 45? No wait...now is that the tach or the speedo? Oh and my cars either really cold or I'm totally out of gas so if you could hurry it up a bit...

Two fairly major updates...

Black dashboard....

And a 94+ spoiler and trunk lid. Old spoiler and trunk is sitting on the hood for double the aerodynamics....

I think I have settled on JDM 94+ Black cloth seats

Kinda like these...but more JDM tytness

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b244/aznboistitch/kenny94mr2interior.jpg

Kupop
04-26-2008, 01:32 AM
Here is my setup:
http://www.kupop.net/mr2/DSC02556.JPG

If they are real "JDM" seats you will need to do some work with them... Mine are JDM seats from a 92 Turbo, stock leather/suede combo which was only available in Japan. That is why my passenger side seat is more worn out.

But here is the tricky part. Take notice that the drivers seat in the MR2 has more adjustments than the passenger seat. Well, if you get a set of JDM seats, your new "driver" seat is the your passenger side. You can simply bolt both of the seats into your car but now your driver side seat doesn't have full adjustments. Also, when using a JDM seat, you will need to change the seat belt lock to the ones from the USD seat. They are different!

What I did with my seats, is simply unbolt my passenger seat, and bolt in the JDM driver seat, and change the seat belt lock. Done.

Now, my driver side. I took both my driver side, and the JDM passenger seat apart. The headrest is the same on both so there is no work here but to remove and install. The bottom of the seat is bolted on to both rails via 2 bolts on both sides, so that is a simple swap too, and the adjustments in the bottom (knee height) are in the rails). However the back of the seat is where the fun begins. I took both covers off. Removed my cloth cover, and installed the JDM leather/suede. Then I cut the holes for the adjustment knobs and reattached the covers, then reassembled the seat.

Therefore, I have 2 fully adjustable leather/suede seats in my MR2.

I love em, if only they were in better condition, and too bad I'll be replacing them with racing bucket seats...

amit
04-26-2008, 10:45 AM
Leather and suede...soo nice...

I really appreciate that information, I had no idea the belt locks weren't interchangeable. Knowing me I would have probably trashed my stock seats the day before I went to pick up my new seats if I didn't know that. This doesn't seem toooooo bad. I mean I don't really care about having fully adjustable seats or anything because I'll pretty much be driving with the seat all the way back and as low as possible the way the passenger seat can be set up....but on the other hand I don't want my passenger thinkin g their seat is more luxurious than mine so looks like i'm swapping it out :)

im guessing that since your in hatfield that you know the guy out at the mr2 warehouse?

i use to go out there and shoot the **** with him every once in a while... when i had an mr2 proj. lined up.

loving your progress with yours though & i love the green. Kudos on doing the interior swap. the blue is the suck. I did a tan to black full interior swap with my lude. I hated it but it was very much necessary.

amit

Thanks a vtecepidemic. Yeah it's been a fair amount of work changing out the interior but it's so worth it. That blue interior is beyond ugly.

Oh and amit, if u didn't get my text. I'm gonna rent an electric impact gun this Friday and get your exhaust and other axle off. If I get lucky, I'll disconnect the crossmember too. Then... If I get REALLY lucky, the engine should be on the ground by the end of the month so... Find a hoist so we can put the new motor in soon :).

amit
05-12-2008, 10:56 PM
I texted you back man...then you texted me back...either you posted this before that or you've been smoking that mer-uh-jew-ana again.

Craig from thompson toyota can lend me his hoist whenever we need it. I don't think we have any major problems besides not having a garage...

It looks like only the exhaust is hanging.... Its not too hard to drop it...

You can do the whole cradle even... disconnect brake lines, coolant hoses, ac lines, electrical lines, ect... then front motor mount, side mounts from chassis, struts, and subframe.

justinlansdale
05-18-2008, 06:47 PM
man, i need to find the video tape of the swap we did in my garage. like what Kupop said above, as long as you have all the lines and hoses disconnected, it shouldn't be hard to drop the entire motor...although i used a cherry picker to pull it out of the mounts and lower it to the ground.

Ok so since my last update I have picked up a set of gorgeous OEM seats from JDM land. I think they look like old school recaro's which is always a + in my book so I've always had a soft spot for them when other people think they are ugly. The second picture shows how complete my interior is...or how close it is to completion I should say. Just need a damn steering wheel.

I'm getting 94+ tails very soon and I should be walking into the local toyota dealership with a list of parts very soon. Trying to wrap it up so I can get the engine in and then a nice blue paintjob.

I did the math and realized these seats set me just past the half way point cost wise as far as parts go (not including paint). I wanna get as much done as possible before school starts (august 22nd)

why would you want to run a 3" dp on the 5s? On the 3s hell yeah.

Hes not trying to be obnoxiously loud with his exhaust like some people we know.

What exhaust you planning on going with? I dont think i saw you say anything about it.

I've always been a fan of the Blitz Nurspec setup.

+1111111 the nurspec for the turbo models is teh sex.

my old setup: HKS single exit with a 3" divorced downpipe w/dump!

Ok so after 6 months we finally got the the car in the garage. Today me and bmat worked on getting stuff out of the way for dropping the engine. Wish I got some pictures. Progress should go pretty quick soon.

what a nice car!

Have you considered the KO racing R1 exhaust?

amit
08-02-2008, 03:19 AM
Thanks a lot man.

I'm hoping to keep the stock exhaust setup. Don't need my car to stick out more than an MR2 already does haha. You have a red one, I'm sure you can relate.

The R1 is only for the 3SGTE, its full 3" so it would not be beneficial to a NA setup.

car will be running tonight. Spent 8 hours on Tuesday swapping parts, getting the engine in and all that good stuff. Wiring will be done tonight and hopefully it will start up and run too....unfortunatly it needs an alternator so it's only gonna run on matts battery booster for now to make sure it warms up properly and the trans and motor move good.

Good times. It'll be nice to see this thing run after all the patience.

Hate to say it bud, but I think your old engine would have ran just fine. There was a blown fuse in the frunk fuse box and a lot of the underdash stuff was keeping it from being able to start. Car runs now though. The engine sounds healthy as heck so that's a good sign. Subframe/axles/wheels go back on this weekend... Clutch and brakes will get bled too. Uhhhhh so yeah. You know have a running duece. Congrats!

amit

It probably would have ran with a few dollars of maintanence stuff but at the same time, this new 5S would have ran great if we just dropped it in. I want it to last forever, thats why i spent about $1000 fixing up everything on it. I have to remember to call you about that spare engine when i get out of class later today.

Does it just flip down? I think mines like bashed up. I wanna get it back to the way it's supposed to be though. By the way bmat you still have my garage key. Can you get that to dan if you're in the area?

Todd-thanks man. By the way i love that little thing in your sig. JDM DOES equal spending thousands making your car look stock. I know this from first hand experience now.

it was a big sigh of relief to start this car when we got everything wired/buttoned up... Took as long as I expected labor wise to. Good 15-20 hours of mr2 on my end. Can't complain about that!

So...I finally have some money to play with some of the cheaper parts are going to be coming in very soon.

Currently expecting..

-Black trunk popper
-Black wideview mirror
-Black sunvisors
-Airbox
-Gauge cluster (I broke the plastic on mine when taking out the ricer white gauge faces)
-Black sunroof trim
-Black CD console

Basically everything to finish my interior

Started buying some suspension stuff but thats on the down low for now :)

I see you haven't bashed in the trunk panel yet for the 94 tails hahaha.

amit
11-14-2008, 05:32 PM
Haha I did not. I have not had any free time lately. That's one of the next things on my to do list though. Modify the rear end to accept the 94 center panel and then hope I setup the lock cylinder correctly so my trunk actually pops unlike some peoples from the horror stores i've heard.

This is kind of a note to myself as a reminder of everything but also a list of what I'm hoping to do this weekend...

-Fill in the holes from the old spoiler and antenna (1 hour total)
-Take off all of the remaining green paint (2 hours)
-Rewire my gauge cluster (20 minutes)
-Bash in the part of the trunk where I need extra space to make the 94+ center panel fit (15 minutes)
-Make wiring for 94+ tails (15 minutes)
-Reassemble lock assembly for trunk and hope I actually do it right so the trunk still opens (30 minutes)
-Install cd console between seats (10 minutes)
-Rewire climate control (20 minutes)
-Clueless about the headunit but I need to figure something out (3 light years)
-Reinstall glovebox/lock (20 minutes)
-Reinstall storage lids behind seats (10 minutes)
-Fix shifter cable assembly (20 minutes)
-Paint muffler (15 minutes)

Estimated time is 3 light years, 5 hours, and 55 minutes. So in theory everything minus the headunit should take about 6 months...

havnt been on looking around too much, but some of the updated pics look like you got some good progress. Just keep on it. I fall into these lazy ruts where i dont really feel like doing anything to my car that i know i should be doing. Im really diggin the 95 tails & that gts wing is loverly.

i might have missed it, but are painting it the same color green when you get to that point? I am a fan of the green it currently is and the light blue they came in in like 94 or 95.

Red is what I got done today....it's something but I have a lot to go. Need warmer climate to get two of those things done and four of those things my friend is in charge of. I'd like to get the others done tomorrow.

you removed all of the OEM paint  why???

are you doing all of the body work and paint yourself or are you looking for someone to do it?
